In 1994 I was diagnosed with celiac disease, which led me to create Celiac.com in 1995. I created this site for a single purpose: To help as many people as possible with celiac disease get diagnosed and living happy, healthy gluten-free lives. Celiac.com was the first site on the Internet dedicated solely to celiac disease, and since then it has become an invaluable resource to people worldwide who seek information about celiac disease and the gluten-free diet.
In 1998 I created The Gluten-Free Mall, Your Special Diet Superstore! which was also another Internet first—it was the first gluten-free food site to offer a shopping cart-style interface, and the ability for people to order gluten-free products manufactured by many different companies at a single Web site.
MyCeliacID™ by Prometheus Laboratories Inc. - Celiac Disease Genetic Saliva Testing
MyCeliacID is based on proven science. People who have celiac disease are known to have a distinct sequence of genes. By testing DNA isolated from a saliva sample, MyCeliacID can show whether or not a person has that genetic sequence. If they don’t have the genes, they are highly unlikely to develop celiac disease in their lifetime. If they do have the genes, and have symptoms of celiac disease, they should consult a doctor. Only a doctor or other qualified healthcare professional can diagnose celiac disease.
Approximately 1 in every 100 Americans has celiac disease. For people who suspect they may have the disease, MyCeliacID may help them confirm their suspicions. For patients with a medically confirmed diagnosis of celiac disease, their symptoms may be alleviated by following a gluten-free diet.
Prometheus Laboratories has performed over 81,000 genetic tests for celiac disease, and is the leader in celiac genetic testing. MyCeliacID results are highly reliable since genes are not influenced by diet or age. MyCeliacID is noninvasive and does not require a blood sample or a visit to your doctor. Patients request the kit online, follow the instructions for collecting their sample, and send the sample back to the lab. Usually within 7 days of receiving the sample at Prometheus, the patient will know whether they have the genes that predispose them to celiac disease. All results are strictly confidential.
