Israel Offers Gluten-Free Army Rations for Combat Soldiers with Celiac Disease

Reviewed and edited by a celiac disease expert.

Celiac.com 01/08/2015 - The Israeli Defense Forces has announced plans to provide gluten-free meals for its troops with celiac disease.

Photo: Wikimedia CommonsThe IDF will soon provide its soldiers with gluten-free battle rations, which means that combat service will be an option for Israelis who suffer from celiac disease.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Until last September, Israelis with celiac disease were exempted from army service, but permitted to volunteer in non-combat roles.

That all changed in June, when Defense Minister Yaalon announced changes to the rules, which now permit soldiers with celiac disease to receive a 97 profile ranking, the highest possible, allowing them to join combat units.

Currently, Israeli draft centers get about 250-300 people each year with celiac disease. So, while the overall numbers are small, the news is big to those affected, who can now get the gluten-free support they need to pursue full military careers, as they choose.

Celiac.com 07/11/2012 - Sometimes, it's the small, local stories that help to capture the larger picture. More and more, community food banks are making efforts to accommodate people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance by stocking gluten-free foods. However, many of those food banks are tight on funds and shelf space, so finding the right balance between the needs of the majority of their clients and the few who need gluten-free foods can be a challenge.
Recently, the Pictou County Celiac Support Group in Pictou County, Nova Scotia sought to help tip that balance with a $500 donation to the local food bank. The donation will help to ensure that the food bank will have gluten-free food available for people who need it.
