Scott Adams
In 1994 I was diagnosed with celiac disease, which led me to create Celiac.com in 1995. I created this site for a single purpose: To help as many people as possible with celiac disease get diagnosed so they can begin to live happy, healthy gluten-free lives. Celiac.com was the first site on the Internet dedicated solely to celiac disease, and since then it has become an invaluable resource to people worldwide who seek information about celiac disease and the gluten-free diet.
In 1998 I created The Gluten-Free Mall, Your Special Diet Superstore! which was also another Internet first—it was the first gluten-free food site to offer a shopping cart-style interface, and the ability for people to order gluten-free products manufactured by many different companies at a single Web site.
I am also co-author of the book Cereal Killers, and founder and publisher of Journal of Gluten Sensitivity.

10 Jan 2009 11:20:56 AM PDT Thank You So Much! Although I don't see any doctors in my state, I will travel when I am able. I have never been so sick in my life. I have just been recently diagnosed by a resident in my local hospital. NOT by MY PHYSICIAN! This Resident was AMAZING! He would not let up on the testing till he found the facts and test results to back up his suspicions that I had Celiac Disease. He tested and retested! He has no desire to open a family practice. That is such a Huge Frustration for myself and I know others in our state that I know have this horrible disease that are going undiagnosed as I was! I am in deep need of much more knowledge and help! I have never been so sick in my life! I have been down with this totally disabled for over four years now!! I cannot go anywhere due to the massive cramping and diarrhea and bleeding and the nausea is unbearable! Every medication they have tried me on I have been allergic too! HELP!!

01 Apr 2010 9:30:38 AM PDT Hi Cindy, This might help. When I was first diagnosed I was as sick as you. It took 10 years, and several doctors, before I found out what it was. By then I weighed 98 pounds (I'm 5'8) and I couldn't leave my house, even to pick my kids up from school, in fear that I wouldn't make it home in time to use the bathroom. By the time I was finally diagnosed, my villi was so damaged, my gastroenterologist feared I had infractory sprue or intestinal lymphoma because I continued to lose weight and was still sick even on the diet. I was put on Prednisone, a few specific vitamins and ate nothing but boiled potatoes and bananas for several weeks. If I tried rice, or baked potatoes for example, I became ill. A nutritionist told me that I might have other food allergies in addition to my celiac sprue, which sent me into a tale spin. Luckily, my doctor was educated enough in the disease to tell me that when villi starts to heal (especially when it was as damaged as mine) all foods (especially dairy) can aggravate it. So, I stayed on my boiled potatoes (plain) and bananas for a long time, then I added a little chicken, etc. If something made me sick, I would back off, go back to the potatoes and bananas then work up again. Happy ending. Within a year, I was off all medicine, was eating whatever I wanted (minus gluten) and had gained 30 pounds. Now, 15 years later, I am so healthy, I eat out all the time and travel world-wide, on a regular basis. This is not a disease to play around with. You must not cheat, you must be extremely diligent in the first year especially. It will get better. Good Luck

14 Feb 2013 4:19:48 PM PDT My daughter is extremely ill. She does IV fluids at home because she loses potassium with so much diarrhea... she also has lymphocytic colitis. She is basically house bound with the pain meds, etc. Were you ever replacing fluids at home?

27 Aug 2010 4:45:28 AM PDT For anyone in Portland, Oregon I highly recommend Dr. Debra Glasser. She is an incredibly thorough, caring, compassionate doctor whom was able to diagnose my celiac after 2 years of suffering. She herself has celiac disease so she is very knowledgeable on the subject. To anyone suffering with the disease, never lose hope, you can find help!

14 May 2012 5:26:13 PM PDT I am in the diagnosis run around and have seen a ton of doctors these past two years. Being a physician myself, I can't believe how hard it it to get some doctors to believe you! As for this list:
-Don't see Dr. Barroso. He was disrespectful and rude. He was visibly frustrated that I didn't have the lab values he expected. I believe he's burnt out and ready to retire. -In Chicago, Dr. Carol Semrad at the University of Chicago is very smart and a world expert on IBD and celiac. Very thorough. She's a true physician. |

02 Jul 2012 7:22:08 AM PDT My MD at Red Cedar Medical Center in Menomonie, WI has been the most help with my family's complicated celiac diagnoses. She treats several of us. Her name is Dr. Kyja Stygar. Her celiac patient list is growing as people hear about her.

06 Apr 2013 5:49:01 AM PDT I have had the disease since I was 2 and I was born in 1988. There need to be more doctors in Tennessee, especially in case some people can't afford medical. I have the skin rash from celiac disease and I am miserable with it. If they can't find a cure for the eating part of celiac disease, at least find one for the rash. My daughter was adopted, and I'm not sure if she is gonna get it. I hope she doesn't and can live a normal life.
