Wide Range of Neurological Disorders Associated with Celiac Disease

Reviewed and edited by a celiac disease expert.

Celiac.com 07/12/2004 – According to Dr. Nathaniel Zelnik and colleagues from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, Israel, the spectrum of neurological disorders among those with celiac disease are greater than previously thought. The researchers studied 111 responses to questionnaires that probed for the presence of neurological disorders and symptoms, and reviewed the respondents medical records. Those who reported neurological symptoms underwent neurological examination and brain imaging or electroencephalogram, and the results were compared with that of 211 matched controls.

The researchers found that 57 out of 111 (51.4%) of those with celiac disease also developed neurological disorders, compared with only 42 (19.9%) control patients. The neurological manifestations included hypotonia, developmental delay, learning disorders and ADHD, headache, and cerebellar ataxia. Epileptic disorders were also slightly more common among patients with celiac disease. The prevalence of tic disorders between the two groups did not differ. The effects of a gluten-free diet did differ among the various neurological disorders found by the researchers. Dr. Zelnik concludes that the therapeutic benefit of the gluten-free diet was demonstrated only in patients with transient infantile hypotonia and migraine headache.

EXCELLENT INFO!! I 'HAVE' a Neurological Disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome. You suffer from SEVERE anxiety, your muscles go completely stiff, such as standing at the sink doing dishes, and you can't move, then taking a risk of falling, which I have done MANY, MANY TIMES! Also, the WORST PART OF THIS DISEASE ARE THE MUSCLE SPASMS ASSOCIATED WITH IT! The spasms can, LITERALLY, 'BREAK BONES'. EVERY disc in my back, starting at C-6, all the way down to the Sacroiliac Joints, which have fused to my pelvis, are ALL herniated. I have ONE good disc, T-5. In the house, where there are safe places for me to fall, I can walk a little, but it is soooo hard! My back hurts UNBELIEVABLY, AND SPASMS THEN START. If I go into a full spasm, they can start in your core body are, the stomach, or they just start in the back, in and around the kidney area muscles. They go down into your hips, your butt, thighs, calves, and now my feet. The hardest part of all with the spasms, is THE PAIN!!! AND TRYING TO BREATHE!! THEY 'LITERALLY' TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY! If I ride in the car or bus, IMMEDIATELY spasms come on. This is also a HORRID disease!!

I 'just' got diagnosed with Celiac Disease, Dermatitis Herpeteformis, and have had lumps, bumps, and MANY open ulcers that NEVER HEAL! Now that I have quite products containing Gluten, my ulcers are healing, FINALLY!!!!! THIS IS AFTER 'ONLY' 1 WEEK!!! My Neurological Disease and Lactose Intolerance Disorder, now makes SO MUCH SENSE WITH CELIAC DISEASE NOW!

    THANK YOU!!!!

I wonder if this is what I have. My head blinks and my balance wanders. I as not diagnosed till fifty after collapsing. I had low iron for thirty years even had a D&C. I have no energy and terrible depression. I doubt I will ever fully recover now.

    Scott Adams

Scott Adams was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1994, and, due to the nearly total lack of information available at that time, was forced to become an expert on the disease in order to recover. In 1995 he launched the site that later became Celiac.com to help as many people as possible with celiac disease get diagnosed so they can begin to live happy, healthy gluten-free lives.  He is co-author of the book Cereal Killers, and founder and publisher of the (formerly paper) newsletter Journal of Gluten Sensitivity. In 1998 he founded The Gluten-Free Mall which he sold in 2014. Celiac.com does not sell any products, and is 100% advertiser supported.

Celiac.com 09/17/2012 - Many aspects of celiac disease simply have not been well studied, so they remain poorly understood. For example, researchers have not done enough study on people with celiac disease to understand if they show any readily available serological markers of neurological disease.
To better understand this issue, a research team recently assessed the amount of brain abnormality in patients with celiac disease, along with looking into MR imaging sequences as biomarkers for neurological dysfunction.
The study team included S. Currie, M. Hadjivassiliou, M.J. Clark, D.S. Sanders, I.D. Wilkinson, P.D. Griffiths, and N. Hoggard, of the Academic Unit of Radiology at University of Sheffield, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, in Sheffield, UK.
    For their study, they conducted...
