I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2007, after years of medical ailments that didn't quite add up. The tipping point for me came after the birth of my third child. I went to my primary care physician with a dry mouth that bordered on dehydration. I was tested for everything from Type 2 Diabetes, to Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, to Lupus. All tests came back negative, and I was sent home presumably-healthy. I returned two weeks later after fourteen days of feeling terrible, and recording what foods seemed to make me feel at my worst. I became convinced that I had either a yeast or gluten intolerance, and came armed to my appointment with mounds of internet research to prove my theory. I was told that I didn't have any of the classic symptoms of Celiac Disease. Regardless, I held my own, convinced that if I was going to diagnose myself with a medical ailment that I found off of the internet, I would have chosen something infinitely cooler than being allergic to wheat, barley and rye. When the test results came back that I did in fact have Celiac Disease, I wasn't all that surprised. Disappointed- yes, but also relieved that after years of doctor's appointments and medications that didn't quite work, all of the pieces of the puzzle were finally coming together for me. What can I say- going to bed without a stomach ache at night, actually feels pretty good.
