Seriously, the majority all the symptoms posted above are what I have! Just about every morning I wake up I feel perfectly fine, but as I move and begin to get up and literally move from my bed I feel light-headed and feel as if I could black out.. Scary! Also, when I eat breads and dairy products, I noticed I feel bloated, and literally sick to my stomach. I'm 20 years old but have already noticed a difference since I'm staying away from Gluten-Free foods :) It gives me hope to tell people I'm not crazy, and this is a very common medical problem that should be more talked about!! My mom earlier this past year was diagnosed with Mantle Lymphoma, which is incurable. She herself said she experienced a lot of these symptoms and the fact there's so many people being diagnosed with cancer is saying we need to look closer at the issue!

Just cut out most of the grain products and go for gluten free old fashioned oats, buckwheat & brown rice with a little gluten free bread now and then. You'll figure out ways to eat inexpensively. The gluten free grain products are mostly junk food anyway. My suggestion is not to have ANY products in the house that contain gluten. ALL will be healthier.

It is important to also mention non = celiac gluten sensitivity, as there are many more conditions that are caused by gluten consumption, including the many auto-immune diseases. New ones are being added to the list, such as Narcolepsy and even Parkinson's. Cutting out the consumption of gluten (wheat, barley and rye) can lead to healing and resumption of a normal life. I have not had wheat in my diet for the last 3 years. I started off with a few symptoms, headaches, gas, bloating, rash, needing to clear throat a lot, heart palpitations etc; What concerned me the most was as the days went on I was so fatigued could hardly get out of bed, my mind and motor skills slowed way down and got very fuzzy, was not able to make important decisions and certainly unable to drive. After eating pancakes with my daughter one morning we were talking and all of a sudden I wasn't able to form certain words. That was so very scary. I don't really need the results to tell me I have a problem with wheat and gluten, other than it being hereditary, and needing to know for sure. It frightens me to think so many people have this and will never know. They , meaning people and their doctors treat the symptoms and not the culprit. Thank you for all the information, I'm sure I will need it. Take Care and God Bless!

I'm 25.

From about the the time I was, oh..13..lactose intolerance started to show up. As every year has passed I've become more and more severely lactose intolerant. More than an ounce of dairy and I am positively ILL. Diarrhea, cramps, bloating, heinous gas. It's terrible. (Even less than an ounce and I become gassy and my stools soften.)

Five years ago I started to develop a migraine aura without headache. The reason I say, 'I started to develop...,' is because within a year and a half it became a constant issue. Today every moment of every single day there are spots are scintillating lights in my left eye. ONLY my left. Photos of my eyes, many visits with retinal specialists and ophthalmologists, an ERG and an MRI later and they still had no idea what was wrong with me. Particularly because it's not bilateral (both eyes). I went a year without any kind of checkups and just a couple of months ago my new Eye Dr. informed me I have macula damage that is not macular degeneration. WELL (here is where it becomes possibly relevant to CD), the mother of a good friend of mine has celiac and nearly went blind from it. As did her mother's brother. A gluten free diet has halted their vision problems.

-For the past three years I suspected I suffer from IBS with constipation, because any time I am feeling stressed, anxious or even just excited (or am going to travel) I get sick for days. Weeks even, sometimes. But over the past six months or so I have been battling a constant cycle of constipation and diarrhea and/or loose stools (not quite diarrhea, but somewhere between normal and diarrhea). Heartburn after I eat almost anything. Constant gas (and I mean constant). I've started retaining fluids way more than seems normal.

I have acute sinusitis, but haven't been able to afford the allergy testing to figure out what the likely culprits are.

Although it was years ago, when I was 19, during a checkup to investigate my thinning hair (more than is normal), constant fatigue and strange heart rhythms it was discovered that I was borderline anemic. Even after taking supplements the problems never went away.

It is a culmination of all of the above that has me convinced to start a gluten free diet. I'm having problems with what to eat for breakfast that is quick, and it's really frustrating, but I'm sure in due time I'll get it all figured out.

I know this is long, but I wanted to bring up the possibility of vision problems in addition to all of the aforementioned symptoms.

Thank you for your post, and as I have been researching CD this is the first mention of vision issues I have come across. I too have many of the posted symptoms, most noticeable during my work in Thailand during the Tsunami. Given the conditions at the time we drank a lot of the local bottled beer instead of water and for the stress release. It was then that I noticed that I was swelling immediately upon consumption. My ankles were huge along with all over body swelling. When I spoke with my doctor back in the states he just suggested it was an allergy to beer and to take water pills. Ever since then I have had lots of swelling and water retention after drinking beer. Also I have noticeable vision issues, where I have deemed myself night blind. Also without health insurance and unable to afford a doctors visit or testing I have been on a gluten-free diet for a week now. I have not had any water retention or swelling in legs since!

Breakfast, I have a whey protein shake or egg white omelet.

I stayed on the gluten free diet until I was 14 (puberty) when my symptoms began to disappear, and I was able to tolerate gluten. At 40, I began to experience gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, loose stools, alternated with constipation, and thanks to prei-menopause hot flashes and night sweats. Knowing that I had already been diagnosed with celiac disease, it was a simple matter of going back to the gluten free diet. I now enjoy a healthy body, and even my menopausal symptoms are far less severe than friends who consume gluten experience. I didn't know that celiacs often suffer from lower than usual body temperature. I suspect that all of my children are gluten intolerant as they all have this oddity, as well as complaining of lactose intolerance, my daughter has gone from a size 5 to a OO, but all refuse to accept a gluten free diet. My one son was tested, but because the test came back negative, they all laugh at me, and refuse to even try it. I have tried to tell them that false negatives are common, but what do I know? I'm just their Mom with celiac disease. I appreciate you having put this site out there, so that when they get fed up with the symptoms, they may independently research this. That way they don't have to hear I told you so. Thanks

The usual advise is to get your blood drawn for the test, and THEN start Gluten-Free. Hopefully the blood test will come up correctly and you'll have confirmation of your condition, but if the diet works for you, you know. Give the diet a month to work - some people's systems take a while to heal after years and years of damage, and it sounds like you've got a lot going on there. (celiac often accompanies or is misdiagnosed as FM)

Seems like the list of symptoms given here is pretty incomplete. Constipation, weight gain, migraines, ADD... there are so many other symptoms that are common but don't fit the out-of-date definition of celiac that most doctors go by...

It's been suggested that I need to see a nice therapist.

I finally figured out myself (at age 48) that if I don't eat wheat, my excema and heartburn clear up, and many other symptoms die down. (I was still eating other gluten-containing products, just no wheat bread or pasta.)

With that added info, my doctor of 15 years told me that I'm celiac.

She said: we can do the blood test; but, you have to eat enough gluten to become really sick before we can do it, and even if it comes back negative, it doesn't mean you're not.

Then, the gold standard test is to do the biopsy.

And then - if that comes back positive - then we know for sure. And then we'll tell you, don't eat gluten.

But, she said, we can already tell you that now. So, you can do the tests if you really want to be sure ...

I said no thanks, my symptoms are being clear and specific already. And the longer I'm off gluten - the more clear and specific they are when I eat some. (Like, WHACK!! DON'T DO THAT AGAIN!!)

So, #34, try the diet. Be strict with it. If it works ... there turn out to be some people (who are not celiac, but have other tolerance issues) who cannot eat wheat, but can eat other related products such as spelt or farro. On the other hand, if the strict diet doesn't do anything to improve your issues - you have something else going on, but you've eliminated a hard-to-test for set from consideration.

He sent me for a gastroscopy and colonoscopy, which turned out positive for Celiac Disease. The gluten-free diet certainly helps with the intestinal problems although I still have some really bad days with diarrhea. I am still fatigued all the time and I have continuously gained weight over the years. I wonder why all the articles indicate weight loss, and everyone I meet with celiac disease including gluten-free cooking classes are 'skinny' while I am so overweight. Diet and exercise have done nothing to reduce my weight. It is very depressing.

Have you had your thyroid levels checked? I was told about celiac from another person suffering from hashimoto's thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) and she has researched the strong connection between the two diseases. I still have trouble losing weight even with my thryoid under treatment. I'm looking into celiac and going gluten-free. Maybe you should have your thyroid tested to see if it may be problematic in conjunction with the celiac.

Other symptoms included loose stools, bloating, small blisters on my arms, occasional swelling of my hands, gums bleeding/inflammation but no stomach aches. I was diagnosed after a small bowel biopsy. Celiac disease, I learned, is an autoimmune disorder and often accompanies type 1 diabetes which I have had for years. If you do not follow the diet, malabsorption of nutrients will continue along with the potential for cancer to develop, so says my doctor. I have been eating gluten free for almost 2 years. It is an adjustment but you get use to the diet. My last biopsy this summer showed 100% recovery of my small intestine and past problems listed above completely gone. Worth the conscious effort!

I disagree. You can eat a very healthful diet without bread, pasta, cookies, crackers, cakes, candy, etc... Non of those foods are healthy for ANYONE in my opinion, they are all highly processed foods. It is really a matter of changing perspective and being creative. Nature provided us with a beautiful variety of the most healthy foods, fruits and vegetables. Gluten grains are not natural as they need to be highly processed in order to be eaten. Think out of the box and enjoy your new and improved health!!!!

I eat gluten free, soy free and dairy free (dairy free until I heal a bit).
Eating soy I feel my body thinks it's gluten, I can be wrecked, literally can just fall asleep like I have been drugged.

Think of it, doctors are people who have read a few books. You can read those books and have that same knowledge, so you should not treat them like they are god, far from it! I would like to think I know more about this kind of thing than the majority of mainstream doctors, all because I have/am living it and because I have spent so much time researching, not just factual things, but more importantly other peoples experiences to gain knowledge.

I spent 6 months taking Imodium after everything I ate just so I could go to the toilet at normal times (it would be loose stools by then). I remember eating an egg custard (custard tart) and it going through me in under 10 minutes.

This craziness resulted in me having an emergency operation to remove my appendix as it was about to burst (high probability of death). In the UK everyone has free health care regardless of your wealth.

Other symptoms include major hair loss, stabbing pains in legs, constant pain (which I didn't really notice that much because I was used to it). I had been ill for so long, I had forgotten what it was like to be able to think and function normally. Having gluten/soy/dairy affects me straight away, it feels like a blanket of fuzziness has been put over me, which causes me pain from the chest up and I feel like I have taken morphine or heroin (without the pain relief of course) as I have no energy to move and go straight to sleep for hours even if I had just woken up fresh as a daisy.

Eating gluten free is very time consuming though, takes an age to make meals, that's what I am tired of.

Just get fed up of people who would say "oh that gluten nonsense". It P's me off. Or I would hear, "it's only a little bit, it's no big deal".

I have been dealing with epilepsy for 13 years now and no one can find the reason! I am convinced this is the answer I have been praying for to any and all gods. I broke out with a strange rash two weeks ago, prior to my test, and now I know what that is all about. As a child, I had horrible stomach cramps periodically but no one could figure them out. We just called it the flu though no other symptoms accompanied it. I have given up on doctors and agree with a previous post that they are people who have read books but they are not omniscient. I knew I had a problem with breads but I assumed it was a wheat/yeast thing and not so serious. However, as I have aged (I'm 36), my symptoms have worsened. It affects me in my brain and my hydration. This website is so helpful and I am so excited to start my new life. The scary thing is the symptoms are progressive and we don't always realize how bad off we are until we improve. My test result was 100+ and anything over 8 was considered positive for Celiac. Crazy! On to my improved life! Anybody with mysterious symptoms, don't lose hope. Even if it is not Celiac, there is an answer. Forge ahead. Peace.

I got on this website after looking for a gluten-free pumpkin pie recipe I could make for Thanksgiving, and one link led me to this website. My sister was diagnosed with Celiac, and has been living gluten-free for a couple of years now. I never really gave it much thought that I too could have it because I really don't have digestive problems, but after reading this, maybe all of my other symptoms could be a result of gluten allergies. I have "brain fog" always, overall feeling of not being well, low iron, migraines, achy arms and legs - especially at night, overall tiredness even after a good night's sleep, bloating, mild acid reflux, low body temperature - mostly just an overall feeling of crap. I requested my doctor test me for thyroid problems, which turned out fine. My doctor has no patience for me because he is used to treating patients with severe life-threatening problems, and I'm just complaining of feeling like crap. I hate wasting his time, but I know something is going on with me that I can't put a finger on. After reading this website, I plan on going gluten-free for a while just to see if it makes a difference. Thanks! I really hope this is my problem - not that I want a gluten intolerance or any other problem for that matter - but it sure would be nice to identify my problem and know I can do something about it.

When I was 16 I ended up in the hospital because I couldn't stop throwing up. It would start with a sharp pain around navel and then erupt into total pain. They did every test in the book and said I might have crohn's disease. My parents put me on vitamins and I ate better and things were better for awhile. By the time I was 25 I was starting to get stomach problems again. I ended up getting a cat scan (normal) and blood allergy testing showing multiple food allergies. (wheat or dairy didn't show up) Ten years later I started getting severe pains and rashes and my Chiropractor recommended me to stop eating wheat. My bowel movements became normal and the severe pains subsided. I don't think I have celiac but I am a gluten intolerance and I have Candida. I am now 36 and trying to get rid of candida. From what I've read people of northern European descent have the highest incidences of celiac and gluten intolerance. Being part Scottish I think is why I cant tolerate wheat. The Scottish grew oats and barely since wheat doesn't grow well in their wet climate. Anyhow, I stay at my ideal weight when I'm off wheat and feel better. Best of luck to everyone.

I have just finished reading all of these comments. I just got out of the hospital after a 4 day stay. Blood-work and colonoscopy(4th). Pending Crohn's and celiac. I have had all the symptoms since I was around age 40. Now I'm 55. The doctors usually diagnose me as being depressed. Yikes!!!! Yeah sure, it's just my imagination! I have had so many tests. Even went to UCLA where they performed invasive tests and found nothing. Don't think they ever mentioned Celiac Disease. I'm so tired of the diarrhea and stomach cramps, migraines, fatigue, no desire to thrive, moody, irritable, nausea, hypothyroidism, itchy scalp, hair thinning, weight loss/gain, clearing my throat all the time, etc. etc. I feel so helpless.

I have struggled with several symptoms over the years including severe fatigue, OCD, anxiety, depression, TICS, sleep apnea, IBS, polyps, immune system changes and weight fluctuation. Now my 10 month old son has had terrible oozing rashes since he was 2 months old and no doctors have been able to explain it. He was tested for celiac disease and rated as a very high risk for celiac. I was recently tested myself and one antibody tested high as the others were low. Still hoping this could be the answer to our problems and will be starting a gluten-free diet for 3 months as a diagnostic tool.

She also had severe constipation, bloating and indigestion. Now aged 87, it's only been in the past few years we've discovered that gluten brings all these symptoms and by avoiding it her bowels are working fine. Too late for her to walk again though, so I implore everyone who even suspects they are gluten intolerant to avoid it like the plague! Incidentally, no doctor diagnosed it or even considered it, only through extensive reading did we decide to try it.

For our son it was mostly his going from a calm, easy going child to an aggressive, angry child. Also, his concentration, especially for learning to read was very up and down. I'm not calling down doctors but they kept saying his blood test were fine. 'It's just his age.' Due to my wife's education, we started checking him through a kinesiologist. Wow, what she picked so fast! Well worth looking into.

I have had some of these symptoms for years and just started to have the stomach pain, cramps, nausea, etc. for the last 14 months and its almost daily for the last month.I thought it might be caused by something emotional because my daughter had breast cancer and asked for the family to be together for maybe the last time last Sept. 12th.,2009 and my stomach problems started that day one hour before they were to arrive and just have not stopped since for long. It was the last time the whole family was together and she passed on June 22nd.,2010. I will start the gluten free diet and see if it helps.
