Although I don't see any doctors in my state, I will travel when I am able. I have never been so sick in my life. I have just been recently diagnosed by a resident in my local hospital. NOT by MY PHYSICIAN! This Resident was AMAZING! He would not let up on the testing till he found the facts and test results to back up his suspicions that I had Celiac Disease. He tested and retested! He has no desire to open a family practice. That is such a Huge Frustration for myself and I know others in our state that I know have this horrible disease that are going undiagnosed as I was! I am in deep need of much more knowledge and help! I have never been so sick in my life! I have been down with this totally disabled for over four years now!! I cannot go anywhere due to the massive cramping and diarrhea and bleeding and the nausea is unbearable! Every medication they have tried me on I have been allergic too! HELP!!

When I was first diagnosed I was as sick as you. It took 10 years, and several doctors, before I found out what it was. By then I weighed 98 pounds (I'm 5'8) and I couldn't leave my house, even to pick my kids up from school, in fear that I wouldn't make it home in time to use the bathroom. By the time I was finally diagnosed, my villi was so damaged, my gastroenterologist feared I had infractory sprue or intestinal lymphoma because I continued to lose weight and was still sick even on the diet. I was put on Prednisone, a few specific vitamins and ate nothing but boiled potatoes and bananas for several weeks. If I tried rice, or baked potatoes for example, I became ill. A nutritionist told me that I might have other food allergies in addition to my celiac sprue, which sent me into a tale spin. Luckily, my doctor was educated enough in the disease to tell me that when villi starts to heal (especially when it was as damaged as mine) all foods (especially dairy) can aggravate it. So, I stayed on my boiled potatoes (plain) and bananas for a long time, then I added a little chicken, etc. If something made me sick, I would back off, go back to the potatoes and bananas then work up again. Happy ending. Within a year, I was off all medicine, was eating whatever I wanted (minus gluten) and had gained 30 pounds. Now, 15 years later, I am so healthy, I eat out all the time and travel world-wide, on a regular basis. This is not a disease to play around with. You must not cheat, you must be extremely diligent in the first year especially. It will get better. Good Luck

Being a physician myself, I can't believe how hard it it to get some doctors to believe you! As for this list:
-Don't see Dr. Barroso. He was disrespectful and rude. He was visibly frustrated that I didn't have the lab values he expected. I believe he's burnt out and ready to retire.
-In Chicago, Dr. Carol Semrad at the University of Chicago is very smart and a world expert on IBD and celiac. Very thorough. She's a true physician.

There need to be more doctors in Tennessee, especially in case some people can't afford medical. I have the skin rash from celiac disease and I am miserable with it.
