What a breadth of knowledge about the origin of European gluten-sensitivity from an evolutionary/human historical/geological/agriculture synthesis. I found parts of this confusing but it explains well why my Irish ancestors were especially likely to do poorly with wheat and barley. So much suffering, especially the children and their mothers, because we didn't know the origin of the problem.

People with the 'classic' symptoms have difficulty getting diagnosed. The common blood tests used are seriously flawed and a lot of so called 'carriers' quietly find out they've got serious problems in later life. Instead of being so non inclusive with gluten intolerance and celiac we should be finding the connections and making sure that everybody who is affected or might be affected has access to the diagnosis they deserve and the resources and information needed to keep them well.

Considering the fact that gluten sensitivity runs in my family in 3rd generation but I do not have HLA DQ2 and DQ8, I think researchers should look for more genetic markers. I get fairly nasty and lengthy reactions to gluten but I am sure in my next yearly physical my doctor will tell me - I have no reason to be on diet- I don't have genes, AB or positive biopsy (all done while on the diet).Just because some other 'specialist' wrote that I can't possibly have this problem because I not have either of two genes I will be waisting my breath telling- I can't eat gluten containing food.
So, please expand your research and inform medical professionals.

I have been told that this can be a bit of a gray area and I don't think they have yet identified all the genes which are responsible for the condition. There are excellent articles on Scott Adams website where he refers to some labs not reporting on alpha and beta units in the gene test. One wonders if this would make the difference. On the other hand, if you know you are gluten intolerant then perhaps that is enough to just say "ok - that's what I am so I will not eat gluten". If people in your family are gluten sensitive yet they have not yet been able to isolate the gene then so be it. I hear sometimes that gluten intolerance and the term celiac disease are interchangeable. Maybe we are all splitting hairs over this after all. All the best to you. Stay healthy and gluten free.

Personally, I think that the cause of the recently skyrocketing numbers of those with celiac disease could be related to the commercial production of wheat products and its irresponsible use any many things without the proper preparation of the grain such as sprouting or at least soaking to remove some of the gluten. I am confident that this would eliminate many of the problems that many gluten sensitive people face as well as stop the quickly increasing numbers of gluten intolerant people.

But, it's already dated. Recently an epidemic of sudden death by reason of kidney failure was lurching across wheat farming areas of Western and Central Europe.

Aristolochia clematis was the cause. This plant can infest and contaminate wheat fields.

It's a killer. Celiac would definitely protect a victim in short order ~ and possibly even save his life.

Celiac was first written about around 250 AD. Wheat flour should not need to be enriched.
