Mad As H***

I just wrote a long blog that disappeared when I hit "post". I don't know why my internet connection always gets these memory jams--mostly when I've just composed a long, thoughtful email. I'll hit send and it hangs up and then says "page cannot be found." How annoying. The title of my original post was "Hot as H***" and mostly I as complaining about the heat. This summer has been a scorcher. I'm waiting for my husband to get up from his nap so we can go to the community pool. The heat makes us s

Support Group

The nearest support group to where I live is over an hour away. I called the national association months ago saying I wanted to start one here, and they said they would call me back, but never did.A few weeks ago I found a gluten-free hot dog place (they have regular and gluten free buns because the owner's kid is celiac). I talked to the owner and told her I wanted to set up a support group and we could meet in her restaurant. She said she would start mentioning it to customers (she's a new bus

Report On The Weekend W/all Those People

Mosaic asked about how my weekend with 10 guests went. We had a great time and the food issues worked out okay.Picture this scene:I'm unpacking a bag of bagles, peaches, and barbeque sauce one of the guests had brought. I pick up the barbeque sauce and look at the ingredients."Oh good, it's gluten free," I say. (It actually said that on the jar). Suddenly everyone stops what they are doing. "Oh," they say, "you're..." (then a pause and hush like the mention of cancer) . "Yes," I say. "I have Ce

Cheating: On Purpose Or Not

This blog is inspired by Mosiac's tea cakes. I didn't used to get sick when I ate gluten before I was diagnosed (at least I didn't know I was getting sick, but I had thyroid, early menapause, osteopenia, etc). After a year gluten-free I find that my body does react when inadvertedly contaminated. Basically, I don't cheat. I thought I would (like when I visit my husband's family in Louisanna and his mama sets biscuits out on the table every morning) but I have found it easier than I thought it

Eating, Really Eating

Today's topic is restaurants. Really good ones, not just the chain places like Outback.   I used to love eating out at fine restaurants (OK, and on our yearly road trip from NY to Louisiana to visit my husband's family, it was always Cracker Barrell). So where does a Celiac eat?   On road trips now, the easiest thing is to scout out the nearest Outback or Boston Market. And I pack a cooler with cottage cheese, carrots, apples, hummus, tortilla chips, grapes, rice crackers and my favorite Mi

5 Am Meanderings

My body and mind are not in agreement on what we should be doing right now. My body wants to sleep but my mind is quite active. I've made a "To do" list but it won't be still...   So blogging is a good solution. And reading yours. All of us with this crucial part of our lives (eating) in common.   Tomorrow the 17-year old French student my husband and I have been hosting for the last three weeks as part of the World Exchange program goes home. It has been lovely having her, and a learning e

Wedding Report & Miso Question

So my earlier comment about my nephew's wedding was written yesterday but apparently I didn't actually publish it. I'm learning.   So it's now today, or the day after, and I'm pleased to report that everything went well. My brother, who is also celiac and a bit paranoid, talked to the chef directly and she put aside two plates for us and gave us what we could eat, which was a lot since mostly the meal was salads and fresh fruits.   My brother and I had a bit of a debate about whether we c

My Nephew's Wedding

I should be getting ready, we leave in an hour. But I wonder what I will be able to eat at the wedding (I have had my cereal to make sure I do not starve). They know my restrictions, but I am the least of their thoughts right now. I will report tomorrow on today...

First Blog

I have arrived   This is my first blog. Not that you care, or it's keeping you up at night, as pre-diagnosis probably did. I am a writer and dancer and celiac. All three are difficult and delightful.   I thought living without wheat, etc would be devestating. It is not, rather it is illuminating. Until last year I was pasta girl, pizza girl, bisquit girl, cinnamon bun girl. I had no pain from this. For over 40 years. Although I was constipated for most of that time. But I thought that was ju
