Hello everyone, I am new to this site and was hoping to get some feedback regarding the relationship between gluten intolerance and possible soy intolerance. I just recently started a gluten-free diet (about 3 days ago) as a result of the constant GI symptoms I have been experiencing for the past month. The last few days have been a positive indication that the diet is working, however, I had a very bad reaction today and I'm trying to pinpoint what it could be from.

I have been suffering for the last 4 hours with gut wrenching pain in my stomach, which pretty much feels like my insides are on fire. Now I am experiencing gas as well. The pain I'm in feels much worse than any GI symptoms I have felt before and it is really intolerable. Thinking back to what I ate, the only thing I can attribute to this would be soy nuts, as I recently introduced them to my diet a few days ago. I ate quite a bit this afternoon as a snack...could this be the culprit???

 

I have been able to eat other soy products before and drink soy beverages from time to time but I have never reacted this way. I should probably mention that the nuts were purchased at Bulk Barn so maybe there was some contamination...but I don't think it would have affected me to this extent.

 

I would really appreciate any feedback...I'm really eager to find out what cause all this pain!!!

I'm thinking I have issues w/ soy now too. I am having trouble finding a milk product actually that does not make my stomach feel as yours did after the soy nuts. I have heard that there is a soy intolerance as well w/ some people. I also have lactose intolerance. the only soy product so far that hasn't bothered me is Stop and shops soy milk. I bought it on a trip to Cape Cod on the 11th and it says Gluten free on the box. I don't know if this helps but I am experiencing similiar. I also heard there are things that you should stay clear of untill your body detoxes and then try introducing items slowly. Hope I helped. good luck. I've been gluten/wheat free since 11th. It's not so easy but well worth it.
Also, I have noticed that cross contamination sometimes effects me worse. Products that say they're gluten free or the ingredients mentioned mean no gluten sometimes these can be processed in facilities processing wheat,barley products etc. I have been ill x2 this wk from what I think is cross contamination. It is so difficult to determine at times it all trial and error. try a different product and see if you're effected in the same manner. process of elimination is how I'm learning now. I know it's difficult but it's getting a lil easier everyday. GOOD LUCK!

In my case, I found out that I developed sever food allergies to other foods because my celiac was misdiagnosed for so long. I also found that once I eliminated the gluten (the strongest or maybe the most dominate offender), I noticed other food intolerances. They had been there all along, but just "hidden". I also have noticed (I was diagnosed in 2004) that once you are free of say gluten for a time, if you accidently ingest some, it is much more painful than before. I don't know if the gluten had killed the feeling in my gut and now it is healed, the pain feels sharper, or maybe you are no longer "used to" the pain. Your body doesn't want to start this again and is letting you know. My suggestion is if you can afford it, get food allergy testing done. I didn't do it right away (I finally left my doctor and went to an allergist on my own), and I wish I had. I can eat very little variety now, but if I had caught it earlier, I wouldn't be in this situation. I hope that this helps, and good luck.
