3 Weeks And Still Trying For 100% Gluten-Free

I never really knew what was wrong with me, but I always knew I didn't like a lot of foods. Some I didn't like because I had strange reactions to them. I have not been diagnosed but the change in my diet is amazing. I just changed my vitamins and wow, its like they work. My aches and pains have improved. my energy level is back to normal. Im trying very hard to learn every food that gluten is hidden in or even cross contaminated. I have been glutenwed twice since I went gluten free. I have been having issues with constipation although I drink prune juice and eat prunes. I just tried eating an avocado and that really seemed to help. Does anyone have suggestions for brand foods that are pure and or better and what not to buy? I'm tired of buying foods that I have to give away.I am 50yrs old and have arthritis as well. I'm currently taking birth control pills because my period has amnesia, it can't remember to stop. Hopefully in time I won't need those either. I haven't eaten out since and I'm scared to. Lucky for me, I haven't suffered from the vomiting or diarrhea. Im sure it has a lot to do with the bland diet I have been on for years [ rice, kidney beans, pure pumkin puree, ect.] that got boring and I started eating a lot of junk food- none which was gluten free. I had symptons like mouth sores, burning throat, nausea, tiredness, excessive gas all the time,migrains all the time, bad periods even while on the pill, depression, insomnia and I think that's everything.

I keep a list of gluten containing ingredients with me. Your pharmacist can help with gluten free meds. Have them put it in your "chart" that you are gluten free, have celiac that flags them to make sure you don't get medicine containing gluten. Don't push yourself to learn to fast. I have had the diagnosis about 9 months and surely still learning all the time. At 3 weeks I was still sick alot and was very frustrated just as you seem to be. I still get "mad" so to speak when I can't have certain things. Unfortunately also if you buy "generic" foods they tend to have more gluten than that of "name brands" so really watch those labels. Lastly my Dr. just told me at my last visit, if you don't know for sure then don't eat it!

Welcome to the forum! I agree, prunes are awesome. Almost a magical help for me.

I am experiencing similar issues with unexplained inflammation while following what I believe to be a gluten free diet. I am 2 days into a raw food only (which really means fruit, veggies and baked chicken breasts) diet. No nuts as there seems to be a cross contamination problem with all kinds that I have tried. Eating out is iffy but salad bars are a good option, cross contamination from the kitchen is hard to avoid when dining out. Some resturaunts are better than others but I seem to be one of the very sensitive people. I also had menstrual issues that went away after being gluten free for a couple of months. I had been experiencing menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and irregular periods even though I was 43 when it began. Thankfully, the hot flashes have stopped and although I am not 100% regular I feel so much better. I read a lot of posts and have learned a lot from other members.

Keep up the good work. I am glad to hear you are making progress. I stick with foods that are not processed. If you are being bothered by foods that should not bother you, you may have to check with each company before buying. One would have to check to be sure they didn't have gluten (or some other food you are sensitive to before purchasing their product. I have had an easier time with this doing Paleo than any previous attempted diets. It is hard to eat out if you truly react to foods that are merely cross contaminated. I am able to do it by carrying my own food, taking an electric skillet with me, and sheer determination. Oh, and a car oven is nice too. I wish you well in your work.

soy can really inflame my joints with arthritis.  I have been gluten free and soy free for 7months. I also stay away from peppers, tomatoes and potatoes which can do the same.
