Newly Diagnosed In March-Swallowing Issues

I am a 56 yr old male who was recently diagnosed in March by Endo,Colon and Blood Test. My Blood work was 249 but I have gotten it down to 23. I have been staying on a strict gluten diet and now I am having Swallowing issues. Went back to my Gastrologist and he stretched my Esophagus and said it was due to Muscle Spasms in my Esophagus. He put me on Blood pressure meds which I questioned. This caused more problems with legs swelling which I have never had high Blood pressure and did not at the time he diagnosed me. I went back to him and told him the issue of swallowing was getting worse and asked him to take me off the blood pressure meds. He did but said he would send me to a Specialist ENT/Head and Neck Doctor.
I saw the new Doctor last month and he ran a series of Barium test on me. Test Showed that my food as I swallow goes to the stomach but backs up before emptying into the stomach. Still no news on what they plan on doing about this issue. I was also told that I have a white blood count issue but have not been told how they will treat this or who.
He did tell me that My Salvia Glads are Swollen so he has me going to another specialist next month for the out come of this issue.
It is causing me to think that my issues may be to Lymphoma but they have not diagnosed me with this.
Has anyone had similar issues?

Many celiacs also have eosinophilia esophagitis brought on by allergies (at least I have seen many postings). Has this been discussed? Here is a link: Open Original Shared Link Welcome to the forum! Here is a link to a posting made by Jebby, who is a PED doctor with celiac disease. She posted about this very topic! https://www.celiac.com/forums/blog/1038/entry-1762-eosinophilic-esophagitis-and-celiac-disease/

I do not know anything about the issue you are having but it is great that your blood work improved so much so quickly!!! Hope you figure out this other issue soon. Good luck!

Michael........I have Celiac and Sjogren's Syndrome, which is another autoimmune disease that is often seen with Celiac. It is one of those which is badly overlooked and missed by doctors. I diagnosed myself and then when I found a good PCP, she ran the blood work and discovered I was right.

What tipped me off was your mention of swollen salivary glands. Read up on Sjogren's for all the symptoms but it affects the eyes and mouth. The autoimmune system attacks the glands which produce tears and saliva, so your eyes and mouth become dry...which in turn makes it very difficult to swallow. I cannot swallow bread without liquids.

There is a blood test for Sjogren's so you should be screened. However, a negative test does not rule it out, like Celiac. It is antibody testing. I was very positive on my celiac panel and so were you so antibody screening might show something, if you have this. Good luck!

I had EoE or something similar when my celiac was at its worst. Which then became a full on eosinophilic disease. Kimuras disease most often involes the saliva glands. An IgE test will confirm or clear you of that easy enough. (thats what I have). It also often causes kidney problems (blood pressure etc). Almost impossible rare but I think you warrent an IgE test to be sure you dont have it.

Michael,

I also have swallowing difficulties after being diagnosed with Celiac.  Locally, I have had my throat stretched.  Got tired of the whole thing, went to a research hospital.  To find out I have a flap of cells growing in my esophagus.  They haven't decided what course of treatment to take, so the Drs. are watching it..  I also have the backing up of food from the stomach.  It's called Baker's esophagus.
