Prednisone/heparin - Fertility Help

I'm curious about a few fertility studies I've stumbled upon online. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 5 years, after going gluten free (blood test confirmed celiac disease) I unexpectedly conceived in June but miscarried (we'd given up it was possible). I've suspected in the past I was getting pregnant, but losing the pregnancies before they had a chance to progress to the point of dectection.

A long story short, I have other autoimmune problems and have just begun prednisone and am finally feeling GREAT! (YAY!!!)

I've read prednisone has helped women with autoimmune problems (who've had infertility/miscarriages) - sometimes using heparin or aspirin in conjunction with the predisone. I'd love to hear from anyone whose done this and if they had any success. I'm going in to see my gyn this Monday.

My rheumatologist has told me it 'might' help my case. Here's hoping! For anyone curious here are two links I stumbled on with some info on the treatments:

http://www.rialab.com/miscarriages_immunotherapy.php
http://www.fertilethoughts.com/forums/view...?pg=medications

Amenorrhea And Celiac

I had been using oral contraception for about five years, until I stopped in July. Here it is November, and I am still experiencing "post-pill amenorrhea," or so I thought. Hubby and I are using condoms, until my cycle returns, and have had nothing but negative pregnancy tests. I haven't had a single period since withdrawl bleeding immediately after my last pill. If I follow the gluten-free diet, I should be just as fertile as any other woman, right? I have been a normal weight for almost 8 months now.

I spoke with a doctor, who suggested I just wait it out (not that I trust those boogers anyway, but that is a whole other topic). What are my options? Should I see a chiropractor, or midwife, or just keep waiting?

I hope I am not getting too personal, but did anyone else have trouble comming off the pill, even when following the gluten-free diet? I have no idea if this is just the after effects of the pill or Celiac.

When Should I Try? Help

I just got my biopsy and pretty sure it will come back positive. Haven't heard anything yet. I miscarried at the beginning of the this year (March 09) and was 8.5 weeks. I didn't know that it could have been b/c of celiac disease.
I am concerned b/c I have a 3.5 & 5.5 year old and want another child. We were already supposed to start trying. I read 2 months of Gluten-Free and you could try again. Has anyone heard that? My doctor is saying 5-6 months from now. I know to him that is not a big deal but it is to me. However, if it means not another miscarriage - or other issues then it is worth it. I just don't know if I want to wait and if we "have" to I may be done. I don't want a large span of time b/w kids. I have 2 sisters and we are very close whereas my husband has 2 siblings and they don't even talk about they are 5 years apart. I know each family is different and there are so many stories but I want them to share growing up together. I don't know I am annoyed and confused. He is also saying he wants to do ANOTHER biopsy to check my status after those 5-6 months. Can't he just do another blood screening. I think that is a LITTLE invasive!

Pregnant!

Sooooo...On October 13th, I got a positive blood test for celiac. Doc told me not to go gluten-free yet, to wait until after the scope and biopsy, and referred me to the specialist to get those done. Heard from the specialist last week, scheduled my consultation for this coming Wednesday. Saturday I found out I'm pregnant Doc confirmed it today.

Dh and I (and our adopted son) are over-the-moon about this. It's my first pregnancy, and we've been ttc for almost 5 years, including unsuccessful fertility treatments. Because I'm really anemic right now, and because of the celiac, we just figured I wouldn't get pregnant...

So, I'd planned to start the gluten free diet in a couple of months, and kind of ease into it.

I'm gluten free as of today. And I feel super pressured, because it's not just my health at stake now, it's my baby's.

Any words of advice? Anyone been there?

The Link Between Celiac And Infertility

Hi!
So I'm still not sure if I am gluten intolerant but I was wondering what caused Celiac patients to suffer from infertility. Is it the vitamin malabsorption that lowers progesterone levels? Do any of you have any good articles on this topic? All I have read is that Celiac is associated with infertility but it doesn't explain HOW. For example, I have amenorrhea, and my SHBG level is extremely low. I read that this could be due to excess insulin. When I tried to see if Celiac had anything to do with it I couldn't find anything.
Any ideas?

thanks!

Could I Be Pregant

I am new to the board but not to celiac. My son was diagnosed in Feb of 2004 with no family history. So after about 6mo I started my daughter on the diet and they have both done very well. I have 5 children and I gave birth to 4 of them and 1 is my step daughter. I had my first child with no problems but with child #2 I started bleeding with him and they think I lost his twin but I was 7 weeks along before a positive pregancy test. Child #3 and 4 I had no problems. My youngest and oldest are the ones who are gluten-free. I then went gluten-free about 2 years ago and I then started having trouble with my period. I will go 6 weeks between my periods and they don't last very long. Well to make a story shorter I have not had a period since Aug. I have taken a pregancy test and it was negative. I have some pregancy symtoms like: full breast, no period, fatigue, and other things. So my question is could going gluten-free cause my periods to go crazy and that is what I am dealing with or could I be pregant?

Ps. My youngest is 6.5 years old and my husband was fixed 6 years ago.

Thanks for any help you can give me. :D

Pregnant And Suffering

Hi All,

HELP!

I have been Gluten-free for a year+. I am 10w3d PG and am sick as a dog! I am having a hard time finding a saltine substitute. The mere thought of crackers makes me want to puke. All food is having this reaction on me. The idea of food preparation; the smell of pretty much anything has caused me to run to the bathroom.

When I was PG with #1, I just ate saltines or other bland foods from a package of sorts. I can't seem to do this with #2. DH tries to help, But he's not very good at gluten-free food-prep.

I can't stand eggs, peanut butter, (Ugh - every thing about PB makes me ill) most (if not all) gluten-free breads...

Any ideas of simple, quick foods would be soooo appreciated.

I have spent most of my days trying not to vomit or cry.

-Laura

Stomach Issues After Giving Birth

I was wondering if any of the women with Celiac Disease have had stomach issues after giving birth. I just had a baby two weeks ago and have had awful cramps and stomach problems for the past 5 days. It is as if I have been eating gluten, which I haven't. I developed Celiac after the birth of my first son two years ago. I am absolutely terrified that I now have some other related illness. I am hoping it is just my body is returning to normal and not some other illness. With my son I lost a ton of weight and thought I was dying from the pain...I am so terrified of feeling that way again. Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Food Ideas...i'm Stuck!

Hello.... I was hoping people could give me some ideas of different thing I could eat for breakfast foods. Here is my current issue....I have gestational diabetes so I have to watch my blood sugar especially in the morning and right before I go to bed. My morning readings are usually a little high. I need to eat some protein. Last pregnancy I ate eggs and bacon for breakfast and that worked fine but now I seem to have developed a issue with eggs and everytime I eat them I get hives and itch like crazy and it's the same thing with dairy. I have been lactose intolerant for a while but could always tolerate cheese and yogurt. Now when I eat even a piece of cheese I get problems with congestion and sinus problems and I get a rash. I'm also suspecting soy as in issue. I recently just started gluten free about two months ago and it helped a lot. But with all these other issues its become really hard to find stuff to eat. I'm awaiting some food allergy results...but regardless of the results I know I'm having issues with eggs and dairy and must stay away. I hope this is just a pregnancy induced thing. So I need help finding breakfast food that has a least 7 grams of protein in it and is below 20 grams of carbs for breakfast. I also need a snack before bedtime that is protein with little or no carbs to stable blood sugar through the night or if I don't have a protein snack my blood sugar is high in the morning. Please help. This is getting really hard..... I'm current 23 weeks and gestational diabetes just starting coming on...thought I was going to be able to avoid it this time. I was wrong!

Feeling Your Baby Move?

hi all,

so I'm almost 13 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and I really think that I felt the baby move today. It was really light, but most of the baby websites say you wont normally feel it until about 16 weeks.

My question - do you think that having Celiac's (been gluten-free for 6.5 years), and going through all the stomach issues you can tell the difference earlier in pregnancy between baby movements and other things going on in your tummy area? What just happened is not a normal feeling (that I've felt in my lower left tummy anyways), and I'm just wondering if it's because with Celiac's I'm so conscious of what is happening in there, that I know what's 'normal' and what's not?

Just curious - am I even making sense?

Thanks all!

2nd Trimester Issues, Advice Needed

Background...I've never been confirmed to be celiac. I've been blood tested twice (both after becoming gluten-free) and was negative. I also had a biopsy done last year (after being gluten-free for 2 years) and that was negative. I have tested allergic to both wheat and milk. Two GI docs told me that they think my symptoms are more consistent with celiac than allergy and two allergists have said it's probably just bad allergy. I spent years being really sick both gastro wise, arthritis and neurological symptoms. They were close to diagnosing me w/ MS when I went gluten free and my symptoms all went away. For years I have been a good gluten-free girl. Now and then I would slip up and usually get D, arthritis and really emotional/ grumpy as a result.

Since being pregnant I noticed that I wasn't getting any symptoms on slip ups. I read that sometimes food allergies aren't noticeable during pregnancy but will likely return right after. I took this as an awesome blank check to cheat... plus my craving monster thought this was a fabulous idea. I've been eating wheat daily now for weeks and not feeling too much of a difference.

I am now 24-25 weeks and the pregnancy has been fine until 2 days ago. The other day I got a sudden rush of blood. Doc sent me to the hospital and they said my cervix is thinning. I had a few contractions but they seemed to subside. They released me today but I am now high risk for premature birth and currently on bedrest. They said that there was nothing I was doing to cause this but I am scared that it's because I'm eating wheat.

I'm wondering does anyone have any good info about complications that can be caused by eating wheat during pregnancy? I am scared now that I really may be celiac and causing this by cheating.

Any advice/ sources would be very appreciated!

Jen

Injectable Fertility Meds & Gluten? Anybody Know Anything?

So, I'm about to undergo some fertility treatments...

Among other things, I will need an injectable progesterone treatment for an unknown period of time -- a minimum of two weeks The fertility clinic says that it's usually suspended in a "food oil" base, typically sesame oil, but the NP is concerned that the base MAY contain gluten. I am not sure why she is concerned about this, I told her I should be fine with sesame oil, but she felt I should use a different medication.

She is recommending something called Ethyl Oleate Progesterone. The suspension is not a food-based oil and she feels there's a lower risk of it containing gluten. The problem is, it's not readily available. It's only available at compounding pharmacies. I was kind of hoping to get my insurance (Kaiser) to pay for it; the regular injectable progesterone is in their formulary, and this special one is not. And I would be surprised if it can even be ordered through the Kaiser pharmacy system.

So I know this is grasping at straws here, but I was kind of wondering whether anybody here had done fertility treatments, including the injectable progesterone, and knows anything about any of this stuff?

Thanks in advance...

-Elizabeth
