Wondering About Weight Issues

Hello All,

I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 years ago (or more). I was put on Paxil and gained about 20-25 pounds over a couple years. Now, maybe because I was getting older (I'm 34 now), maybe b/c Paxil is notorious for weight gain (but i didnt know that then, nor did doctors). I have always been a "gym" person. Nothing crazy but I go 3-4 times a week. Every now and then I fall off the wagon and only go 1-2 times.

Since I gained that weight (couple years ago now) I cant lose it. I switched to Lexapro and still nothing. I have been on Lexapro for 2 years. Weaned off and had bad withdrawal, went back on.

Since being diagnose with Celiac I believe that my anxiety could have been related to this all along. So I am weaning off slowly. I am just about ready to discontinue. My migraines have gone away since gluten free!!! Thats amazing, I struglled with Migraines since I was 11!.

So I hoping that once I get off the antidepressnts and since I have been stablizing on the gluten free diet and feeling better maybe a few pounds will drop. I still go to the gym, prob only three days a week. I have the Gluten Free down. I didnt good for 3 months then cheated in August (rookie mistake I guess) and payed for it. I am now strictly gluten free for life.

Could celiac have something to do with my body not respoding to eating right and working our or is it the antidepressent or is it just the way my body is???

Just was wondering what you all thought?

How Do Some Celiacs Put On Weight?

Hi!
So I know there are quite a few of Celiacs that put ON weight instead of losing it. One theory I heard is that the body is so malnourished of vitamins that it holds on to every calorie and the metabolism slows down. For those of you who were undiagnosed and overweight, did you deal with anemia issues?

Let me know what you think, it's very interesting to me.

Thanks!

How To Put Weight On A 2yr Old?

I found out I have celiac disease this last year.
It runs in my family.

And I'm thinking my 2yr old might have it as well.
She's just not gaining weight.
I looked up a BMI calculator for children today, and it puts her under the 5% percentile for her height.
She weighs 25lbs.

She looks like she's getting the blisters on her elbows and knees.
She also has frequent runny poop that smells similar to vomit.
I've been trying to wait for her next dr's appointment which is monday, but I called him to leave a message voicing my concerns anyway.

What I want to know, is if anyone has suggestions for putting weight on a two year old that possibly has celiac. Diet plans, etc.
I'm also lactose intolerant due to celiac, and my doctor told us to take my daughter off of milk products as well, because my husband is lactose intolerant as well, and she wasnt gaining weight even at that point.

So gluten, and possibly lactose free high fat/calorie diet?

Acid Reflux + Weight Gain

I have been gluten free since june 09 (with a few slips)
Problem One) I've had trouble with severe acid reflux symptoms for a while and even while being gluten free I still have a really hard time with this. I can't lay down even, it's really bad. I am ALWAYS nauseated plus have heartburn.. literally 24/7. What should I do? Any explanations.

Problem two) I was slightly overweight when I was diagnosed and could never lose weight no matter how hard I would try. Well, even now I can not lose weight worth the life of me. If anything, I'm gaining weight. =( what should I do?

Gluten Free Diet

I just had the bloodwork done today to look at the antibodies. My doctor is pretty confident that I have Celiac's so I have been eating a gluten-free diet for a few days now.

My question is: Is it ok for Celiac's to eat foods that contain gluten that don't seem to bother the stomach? I have noticed there are a few foods that don't bother me or bother be only a little bit, but do contain gluten. I'm assuming I shouldn't be eating anything that contains gluten- whether it bothers me or not, but I just want to check since I'm new at this. I meant to ask my doctor today, but I had so much going through my mind that I completely forgot!

Thank you for your help!

Ridiculous Weight Gain!

Hi all. I am wondering if any of you experienced huge weight gains after gluten-free? I was terribly malnourished at dx, so I knew I would gain a lot of weight, but this is ridiculous! I eat aobut 1600 calories per day: no grains (except for rice cakes), starches, legumes and very little dairy. Mostly lean protein, veg and 1 - 2 servings of fruit. I do daily weight training< and 30 minutes of cardio almost every day. I started Levoxyl a month ago because mt TSH was 5.05. I know the dose is too low at 75 mcg, but I dont think that fully explains how I've almost doubled mt weight in 4 months.
Anyone know when gains from malnutrtion stop? Thanks so much.

Need Some Help Gaining Weight And Eating So Frustrated

Hi guys just wanted to say what a great forum! I have been on a glutten free diet for around 2 months or so. I have been pretty goood so far, some accidental oops since i am still new at this. I had just started to eat a lot better before all of this started. Finally got on a steady meal plan, and slowley gained weight to 120. Then it happended, started getting sick, stomach pains, gas, very tired all the time, and constipation. It got really aggravating for me, since i had no idea what it was. I started missing work more having to go home early or call sick. Before this have called sick MAYBE 3-5 times in 4-5 years. I finally saw my doctor, (Hate doctors) this also was my first time seeing this one. It was a physicians assistant to, not a real docotor. He didn't really give any input or anything just told me to do a blood test. Just a very basic test latter white cells were good, red, etc. So at this point i said screw it. I did my own research and started a food log to get a idea what it could be. I started browsing the forums and came up with a few possibles, then tried the wheat thing. (After i found out i was getting sick eating Cinnamon tost Crunch) First ingredient was Wheat. Long story short i started feeling better, then went back to test theory one more time, got sick again. Should get blood test to see what i need to stay away from anytime now. (Stupid USPS) Well since this started i have got very frustrated on what i can eat, giving up many things i like. I get free food at Starbucks (Work there) and now can't eat like any free food. Now i barley eat anything, i eat one meal a day and its late late dinner around 7:00-8:00pm. When i am at work which is 80% of time i can't eat anything around or at work chilis(Ribs, Steak Chicken no sauce) To expensive around 11-20 Bux) or Subway. I have gained some weight back, From 112 pounds at 6' to 123 now (Staying no matter what) Anyone have any suggestings for Good instant food or work that Isn't frozen (no freezer at work) I do have Depression, (200mg twice a day still dosn't work worth poop) which i have felt had gotton better before this, now i feel is worse again. I am 6' 123 still, 23 years old, am a smoker right now, and drink 1-2 times a week. Thanks for any input. Brian

P.S. think i am Wheat, maybe barley, oats, soy, and maybe little milk?

I went flying recently and at O'Hare airport tried to get some food, and couldn't find jack. Plus no one knew anything about glutten free. Finally got a Yorgort, (Different brand then ususal and then latter broke out.) I think it was Danon i tried usual Yoplait. Athough i have been cutting dairy back also today i ate cereal Chex which i know is glutten free and still felt sick after 1/2 the bowl. Not as bad as usual.

Weight Gain And Loss

I'm relatively new to the gluten-free lifestyle (since May '09) and it seems I now have a very reasonable appetite whereas before going gluten-free, I was hungry ALL THE TIME. I suppose this is logical since my innards were so damaged I wasn't absorbing nutrients and my body was craving them constantly, but why do such a high percentage of celiacs have the opposite symptoms? I had weight gain for YEARS, then after going gluten-free, I'm consistently losing weight. Has anyone else experienced this flip-flop of symtpoms? What can I expect to see over the next 6 months (bringing me to my gluten-free anniversary)?

Thanks!

New To This.. Weight Struggle. Rebelling. Etc.

I have been so frustrated with this weight thing. I was diagnosed as a Celiac less than a year ago. Before which, I never had trouble losing weight when I needed to..I could have cut out bread only and lost a significant amount of weight. It's like now that I am *trying* to cut out EVERYTHING containing gluten, working out 4 or 5 times a week- the weight won't budge. I see no results really. Especially in the tummy area. My fiance is in Iraq and is coming home in six weeks and we're getting married- and I feel like my effort is going nowhere.

Ok, ok- and to be completely honest- sometimes I rebel and gluten myself. Is anyone else experiencing the "Just because you said I can't have it, I'm going to anyway." syndrome? I know it's terrible and I FEEL terrible after- but I am going to make a huge effort to embrace my new lifestyle free of stomach pains, rashes, body aches, and being lethargic.
Could this rebelling be the reason my weight is at a stand still?

Just am new to this whole site and hoping I get support and make some Celiac friends. I feel like an alien sometimes when my friends want to go out to eat and I have to say, "Wait, where?" "Please don't bring the bread to the table." "I'll have my salad without croutons, the chicken not breaded, and oh the rice instead of the pasta."
...Blah.

Hope to hear any thoughts.

No Celiac Symptoms, Do I Have To Do gluten-free Diet?

My 6 year old daughter was just diagnosed with celiac based on blood tests (her endocrinologist suggested it as she has a thyroid disorder). She is symptom free - her growth has been on target since birth (she's 50% height/weight), no problems eating/digesting/pooping, no behavior problems, no development problems (she's extremly smart and outgoing).

So the gastro dr is going to repeat the tests just to be sure, but after that wants to start her on a gluten-free diet. I kind of feel "why rock the boat". Why should we change her diet if she's doing OK? I feel like if we do change her diet and she gets used to eating gluten-free, then when she does ingest gluten, it will reak havoc on her system as it won't be used to it...almost like a trigger.

My mom had celiac as a child and "grew out of it". She has been eating normally for 65 years and no problems...why can't I do this for my daughter and if she does develop any issues then put her on the gluten-free diet?

should we have an endoscopy to be sure? I don't want to have to put her thru that either unless necessary.

Please don't peg me as a bad mom...I make sure she eats very healthy, she's only about 1 "sugar" a day, I water down her juice, she only eats whole wheat foods, eats several fruits and veggies a day and her favorite meal is salmon with spinach...can't say that for many 6 year olds. I just don't want to put her on a special diet if its not necessary as I feel like she'll miss out on so much of a childhood (b-day parties, mcdonalds, pizza night, etc..)

Gluten-free was a breeze, but gluten-free casein-free soy-free low-sugar appears to be beyond my powers. I wonder if Docs-in-a-box can manage referrals to gastroenterologists or nutritionists.
Hello Everyone,

Over the last week or so meat has become repellent to me. It smells bad, looks funny. Also my low blood sugar is not reacting to skipping meals or just eating fruit and coffee. I know this can't healthy .........

What the heck is happening to me? Why does meat smell bad to me? Do I need another vitamin or should I just go vegetarian?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you RA
