gluten-free Flatbread In Dc

Churchkey, a new bar in Washington DC, offers gluten-free flatbreads. I've had two of them -- the pulled pork was awesome, kind of like an open-face cuban sandwich, almost, with mustard and pickle slices. The BLT pizza one was a bit less successful, but still pretty good. The bread part seems more garbanzo based, a little on the hearty side.

The most exciting thing is, DC has not been one of the greatest cities for gluten-free, and I'm hopeful that this is a sign things are going to improve.

Two things about Churchkey: it's new and it's currently very popular, so it's crowded even on weeknights. The other thing is, it's a bar, so kids can't go. http://www.churchkeydc.com/

gluten-free Pizza Request Sent To Papa John's (and They Are Listening!)

Okay, so like most of you I miss pizza. Yes, I can make it at home with all the fixings and it tastes great (even my non-Celiac husband and friends love my pizza), but I miss lazy Friday nights of ordering that gooey; thick-crusted; golden-colored; topping loaded dish that is delivered right to my door with little to no hassle. It is greasy, but oh-so-good! Well, I decided to contact my local Papa John's and see what they could do about my dilemma.

I spent a few hours composing the perfect words (I admit I really appealed to their $$ side in order to catch anyone's attention). Within 24 hours I had two emails sitting in my inbox. The first was from Consumer Services; the second was from the Papa John's Area Supervisor for Fredericksburg and Stafford. Both were very positive in their response about forwarding my thoughts to their Research & Development Department. The Area Supervisor's email really made my day:

Mrs. Flusche,
My name is Jeff Bartlett and I am the Area Supervisor for Papa John's Pizza in Fredericksburg and Stafford. Your comments about the gluten free product were passed onto me from the weekend. I have since sent them onto our research and development department who look into these sort of suggestions. Hopefully they will take your suggestion under advisement and find that there is a large enough market for it. Sorry I could not be of more assistance to you in this matter. Hopefully we can be your pizza choice in the future.
Jeff Bartlett

So, for anyone and everyone who misses their Papa John's, go ahead and contact them. Perhaps if we show enough mouth-watering support they will show up at our doors with those fresh ingredients we long for.

Yours,
N. Flusche

Syracuse Olive Garden

I made my first attempt in early October to eat gluten-free in a Maine Olive Garden and left without ordering, almost in tears. It was painfully obvious the staff knew nothing about the gluten-free menu. I didn't sense that anyone had received any gluten-free training. Maybe they just haven't had any celiac patrons. I never enjoyed eating in OG even when I could have anything on the menu, but my friend loves the place and I agreed to try in Syracuse. My friend is a nurse but I know she still believes a little gluten now and then shouldn't hurt. Grrrrr! I still don't feel any better since becoming gluten-free so I won't know if there is any CC. I know that following sterile technique regarding CC in hospitals is a never ending battle with nonnursing staff. I really don't feel comfortable that all restaurant staff will comply if they feel they aren't being observed. I am going tomorrow even though I really don't want to go. I will call the restaurant in the early afternoon and hope to talk to the chef or manager. I hate the idea of quizing my waitress regarding CC when I order. I felt like a freak when I was in Maine!

Gluten Free Chain Restaurants

When I eat out now it has to be at Ruby Tuesday, Chile's, Uno's, Outback, or Olive Garden(these are the chains in my area that offer a gluten-free menu). None of these places serve breakfast. Are there any restaurants with a gluten-free breakfast menu? Are there any chain restaurants with a gluten-free menu that I haven't thought of?

Gluten-free Pizza In Irvine, Ca

First Class Pizza, located in the shopping center at the corner of Sand Canyon and Irvine Blvd, offers a delicious gluten-free pizza. We always order a large so we have leftovers. Not sure if they offer a medium size too.

We also found gluten-free pizza at the Whole Foods in The District shopping center (corner of Jamboree and Barranca) in the hot food deli. It doesn't seem to be advertised on their menu but if you ask, they have the individual-sized pizza.

Hope this helps someone else too.

Linda the owner has Celiac & came out to speak with us. She also gets some of her stuff from the gluten-free Creations Bakery.

and last we tried Picazzo's http://www.picazzos.com/

the pizza was good, but honestly we found that Sourdough tasted better!

The bakery does sell their items online & is well worth buying from them!

Starbucks - Gluten Free Or Not?

Hi there,

I am *very* new to a gluten free diet (1 week +) and to this website (just today!), so please forgive me if this has been addressed somewhere and I just haven't been able to find it.

I'm a Starbucks fanatic. I went to Google and searched for 'Starbucks gluten free'. I found all kinds of blogs and different sites stating that Starbucks beverages (with a few apparent exceptions for some of their Frappucinos) are gluten free. I even found postings by people who said they had called Starbucks customer service or talked to Starbucks managers, and they were told beverages were gluten free. But I couldn't find anything on the actual Starbucks website. Since I felt like I should be sure, I called the Starbucks customer service number myself. The guy I spoke to told me that they cannot guarantee that *any* Starbucks beverage is gluten free, because even if a beverage doesn't have any ingredients that contain gluten, they can't guarantee there's no cross contamination. The example he used was if a gingerbread latte was made before my gluten free drink, that would contaminate my drink. So they won't make any guarantees about it.

So now I'm naturally confused...people are saying that they've been told by Starbucks employees that XYZ beverages are gluten free, it sounds like lots of people on a gluten free diet drink Starbucks every day without a problem, but this one guy told me he can't say "gluten free". I feel like I should believe the Starbucks person I spoke to. But for all I know really the guy didn't know and chose the easy and legally "safe" answer. I'm wondering how others would view this (traumatic, for me) dilemma?

gluten-free Thanksgiving Dinner Out

I am new at this gluten-free thing, my almost 2 year old was diagnosed in August. We always go on vacation for Thanksgiving and this year we will be eating at a buffet. I am wondering if there are any items that I could for sure go for for him instead of having to bring all his own food.
Here are some of the items they have listed for their buffet:
Roast Turkey, Carved Glazed Ham, Yankee Pot Roast, Steamer Clams and Mussels, Smoked Pork Loin, Salad Bar and Asian Grill.
The year before last when we went there they had yams with marshmallows, mashed potatoes, pudding and ice cream.
Any suggestions?

Cafeteria Style Vegetables--gluten Free?

I am relatively new to having DH, and I am having to scrutinize the places, at which I eat out.

Here in the foothills of NC, we have a cafeteria, J&S, where you enter a serving line and request the foods you want. They serve quite a number of cooked vegetables (green beans, peas, carrots, mashed potatoes, etc.). These vegetables are cooked in what I would call "home-cooking" type fashion. I asked the manager about gluten content, and he was unsure. He said that they cook the vegetables in "vegetable oil" and with "vegetable seasoning."

Are these ingredients safe? Are cooked vegetables generally safe?

I would hate to give up this place but will if necessary.

Thanks for any help!

Godfather's Pizza gluten-free?

Today I found out that Godfather's Pizza carries gluten free pizza. I did some research and it appears that is true. They are becoming more aware of the the seriousness and increase of Celiacs disease. I went to call the Godfather's nearest me and they do not carry it and said they will not be carrying it. I searched for the nearest Godfather's and that one along with quite a few do not carry gluten free pizza. Is this something Godfather's pizza is slowly working towards. I was disappointed.

How To Eat gluten-free At A Japanese Restaurant?

We are going to a Hibachi Japanese Restaurant for my boyfriend's sister's birthday next week and I have no idea what to eat. I HATE white rice, but I'm sure the fried rice is not gluten-free with the sauces they use in it. The employees speak very, very limited English. I tried calling once and they didn't even understand my question when I asked about "gluten free eating" at their restaurant. I plan to try again, and hope that there is someone that speaks better English, but I'm just not sure what to do!
Pazzo Ristorante, Great Gluten Free Italian In Pittsburgh!

I had the best gluten free Italian meal I've had in a LONG time last night, and I just wanted to make sure all the other Pittsburgh people on here know about this place since I think it's fairly new! It's Pazzo Ristorante, on Washington Road (Route 19) in Mt. Lebanon, across the street from the Galleria and just up the road from South Hills Village.

They have a great selection of items that can be made gluten free, including several pasta dishes made with rice pasta! I haven't found any other restaurants in this area that have gluten free pasta, so my mom and I (both Celiacs) were pretty excited. I had a cheesy baked pasta dish that was huge and delicious! And everything comes with a big bowl of salad (like Olive Garden) and they made a special one for us that had gluten free dressing on it. My mom had the Shrimp Pazzo, which was amazing as well. And their gluten free dessert option is a flourless chocolate cake that was very rich and decadent. Just a really great meal all around! And the prices aren't too bad either.

Our server was very knowledgeable about gluten and told us that the chef is really making an effort to attract gluten free customers. He said she is even working on a gluten free pizza! They have their menu on their website with the gluten free items marked: www.pazzopittsburgh.com

Very highly recommended, and thankfully not too far away from where I live!

Sara
