Feel Worse? Please Help

I am writing this for my girlfriend who has recently been diagnosed with Celiac. (about 3 weeks). Her symptoms are fatigue, numbness, chills, blurry vision, brain fog. I have noticed those to be relatively common symptoms of Celiac before diagnosis.

She has gone Gluten Free and the past few weeks have been awful with symptoms. It seems like every symptom has magnified mulitple times without Gluten. I have been chalking it up to the theory of "It gets worse before it gets better" but has anyone had this happen? Also, right after she eats, (which is Gluten Free) she feels dramatically worse. Is this common in the first weeks of a gluten-free diet?

Any info and help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Okay, so I think I jinxed myself. I was JUST on a forum about gluten-free Chex and said how I have never been sick from any.
Well, two hours later I am throwing up (gluten symptoms as well), and I am throwing up more than my chex... There are spots of blood all through-out it.

Is that normal at times to throw up blood? Or do I need to go to a doctor?

How Long Before I Can Do Things Again

Well I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance two weeks ago, the first week I ate as strictly gluten free as possible and I can only think of two times I made a mistake. The second week I have checked every label, gone to websites, checked the labels again. I don't know what I could possibly be doing wrong but I still am sleeping for 14 hours and when I am awake I have unbearable abdominal pain and muscle tightness. I want to be able to do things but I am so fatigued and have no energy. Is there anything I can do? How long was it before you started feeling normal again?

Help...too Much Going On

I am feeling very, very overwhelmed. I have been gluten-free for over a year, as well as dairy and egg-free, and I am extremely vigilant about my diet. However, I am having stomach aches at least every other day, and I am so fatigued that I could just sleep for days...in fact, I find that I start a project and then just sit on my bed for hours. I don't know who to see. I saw another gastoenterologist recently and he ran a CBC and basic blood panel on me, plus a celiac disease blood workup (his response was, "what do you think we should do? Can you afford to have me scope you to check for cancer?". And I specifically asked him, will the blood test be accurate for celiac disease since, one, it costs $300 and I have no insurance, and two, the last test I had was negative, and three, I understand that if you've been off gluten, it will not be correct. As expected, it came back negative. However, my CBC was off the charts - I've had ITP for years, so it was not a shock, but it still very worrisome: platelets 37k, WBC 3, Hemo 33.4. He immediately passed me back to my hematologist, who had done a bone marrow aspiration last year - and told me to have a liver and spleen ultrasound once again. I am also going to see a nutritionist next week but frankly, don't expect much - she is not well-versed in gluten intolerance or celiac disease. I've been having a hard time keeping my weight up. I am 53 and over the years have dealt with depression, anemia, thinness, rashes, headaches, stomachaches, bruising & pettechia, brain fog, clumsiness, difficulty conceiving (and a miscarriage), early onset menopause, and very dark circles under my eyes. In addition, I have asthma and allergies (both food and environmental). I've also had 2 right breast lumpectomies (benign) and my current mammo shows 5 "suspicious spots" on my left breast.
I am at my wit's end. WHO do I see??? I wonder if I should try someone in the homeopathic realm instead of "normal" doctors (who have been of no help whatsover). I don't know which way to turn. I hope someone can give me some advice or reassurance, or recommend a good doctor in the Gainesville, FL area (I had asked for recommendations on the "doctor" forum, but the one who was recommended has not been of any help).
Thank you in advance.

Celiac Disease And Pain After Sex

Hi
I just found out this week that I have celiac disease. I have been having lots of pain after my husband and I have sex. (I just had a gynocolgist appointment and they didn't find any apparent reason for the pain, but after hearing about my digestive issues, suggested I be tested for celiac) I was just wondering if anyone else has dealth with this and if being on the gluten free diet cleared it up. I am very hopeful that this diagnosis and the diet will clear up both my digestive issues and my pain after sex. Just wondering if anyone had a similar story?

Thanks

Received Enterolab Results

I got my enterolab results back today:

Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA: 10 Units

Fecal Anti-tissue Transglutaminase IgA: 10 Units

Quantitative Microscopic Fecal Fat Score: Less than 300 Units

Fecal Anti-casein (cow's milk) IgA: 5 Units

HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 1: 0201

HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 2: 0602

Serologic equivalent: HLA-DQ 2,1 (Subtype 2,6)

I guess the reason I'm not happy with the results is that IgA results for gluten were 10 units. I know this is still a positive, but it doesn't feel very definitive to me. I mean, what makes you non-sensitive at 9 units, but sensitive at 10 units?

I've been gluten free for 4 weeks with little or no results and I'm very frustrated. It also appears that when I go back on dairy, my symptoms that led me to believe that I have a gluten sensitivity come back. I didn't show up as having a dairy sensitivity, but I know I've had problems with lactose intolerance. Can severe lactose intolerance cause fatigue and achiness?

I know I came back with a celiac gene and a gluten sensitivity gene, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have either of them. It just makes it more likely that I do. I'm just tired of being sick and I don't want to keep running down this road if there is something else wrong with me and I'm getting so distracted thinking it's gluten.

I guess I was hoping that I'd come back with really high numbers on my IgA's so I would have no doubt in my mind that I need to go off of gluten. A 10 feels so borderline. Ugh. Any advice? Have any of you scored this low?

Scared And Sad And...relieved

After battling hives (possible DH) since mid-August, daily and most days head to toe!!! Very itchy, I was miserable! After going to my family docter three times, my dermatologist two times, and an allergist three times-I finally was sent to a GI specialist, they did a blood panel with showed wheat and gluten intollerance, then ordered an upper endoscopy with biopsy of my upper small intestines. The biopsy was Friday, found out yesterday that it is in fact Celiac disease. Which explains the hives, and might just explain my fertility issues, I've had six miscarriages-never carried a pregnancy to term.

Scared-because I had an xray today of my small intestines, so all sorts of thoughts are going through my head, "how long have I had this?!" and "what have I done to myself?!" and God forbid "what if they find something on the xrays?!!!!"

Sad-because I already miss my mom's oatmeal cake, my dad's fresh baked bread, and the cookies that me and my daughter (she is adopted) make together that taste soooo good!!! I'm also sad because my husband, daughter, and I love to eat out! Well how do I know what restaraunt to trust, when they say "gluten free"-is it honest, how fearful should I bee of cross-contamination?!

Relieved-because I am hoping my hives leave me soon! The doctor said it would take more than a couple of days, perhaps a couple of weeks, maybe even longer!!!! There is also a small part of this 38 year old woman that sees the silver lining to all of this, that being, what if...what if I can have a baby once I am gluten free?!

Am I Missing Anything

As I read more and more on this website I discover other areas my doctor should have checked since I have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. For example: I had to ask my doctor about a bone scan because I read that some people develop osteoporosis and in my case after my bone scan I have osteopenia. I have now read up on vitamin B deficiency and all of the symptoms (which a lot I have) that come with it including no half moons which I only have on my thumbs and had to call my doctor yesterday to see if this was checked when I had blood work done. The answer was "NO". Now I am going to have this checked. Why am I having to tell my doctors which tests need to be done and why don't they already know what they should be checking for if someone was recently diagnosed with celiac disease? Do I have everything covered? Is there anything I haven't covered or been tested for yet that the majority of Celiacs have and should be checked for?

I currently take my One A Day muli vitamin, addtl. iron and addtl. calcium.

Thanks.

In Need Of Encouragement, Stories

Hi all,

I'm at four months gluten-free, and for the first three months I felt a steady, slow improvement in my health: my energy began to improve, rashes began to heal, my breathing improved, gas improved--all slowly but surely. However, in the last month, though I have been even more strict about my diet (having eliminated many potential problem foods, added digestive enzymes and probiotics), everything has gone downhill. It started with a period of extraordinary insomnia, though I seem to be sleeping well again now. I also have been losing weight, feeling weaker, foggier, and achier, and looking and feeling more and more malnourished (despite many gluten-free vitamin supplements).

Anyway, I'm not really looking for advice concerning my own situation, but rather stories from others who have had similar experiences, if there are any. I get discouraged when I read of people who suffered from symptoms like mine, but then were completely healed in a month or two. I was sick for two years before going gluten-free, so the damage might have been extensive, but I don't know. I'm also going to keep looking into other possible sources for my ill health, but all my symptoms seem to match celiac so well...

So, I'd love to hear from any slow-but-successful healers out there.

many thanks!

I'm Going Crazy.

I've been gluten-free now for a little over 3 months and although I started out quite positive (pure relief to have a "name" to what's been going on) I have become exceptionally frustrated and I'm honestly wondering if things have taken a turn for the worse and not the better.

Since going gluten-free I have developed DH. I'm at the point where I am itching ALL the time. I hate it and it is making me very depressed. Never once before going gluten-free did I have a sign of DH. Doc didnt want to prescribe anything, said to use over the counter cream - which does help a bit but will send me broke if I have to keep it up.

I've also added previously non existent bowel issues into the mix. I can't go anywhere without needing to keep an eye out for the nearest toilet and I've suffered some very very close calls.

My iron levels are shocking. No change in almost 12 months. Doctor says now that I am gluten-free, it should resolve itself and just to keep taking iron supplements. Despite taking a very high dose, I'm still suffering very loose BM.

I'm also geting very sharp pains under my right rib/breast area. I have contemplated going to the ER several times because of it, but just when I get to the point of going, the pain does subside. Can last from anything ranging 30 mins to 3 hours.

I've always been a good sleeper. Not anymore.

My antibody test last week shows I still have low levels. Not sure if I'm still coming off gluten or still injesting it.

My diet has become very restricted despite being an excellent cook. I've just lost confidence.

Still very fatigued. Want to sleep or stay in bed.

My question is - why do I feel so bad, and infact, worse than I did before my diagnosis? I am seriously contemplating going back on to a gluten diet. I know the risks, but I cannot in all seriousness seemyself living like this for another 20 years when I'm struggling to get through the day. I feel worse than I did before going gluten-free.

Any thoughts? Suggestions welcome. TIA

Officially Diagnosed And One Week Gluten-free!

So, I got the positive blood test for celiac on October 13th, but was still eating gluten, waiting for my scope and biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Then on November 7th I found out I was pregnant. November 9th I went gluten free with the approval and recommendation of my doctor, as it's best to be gluten free if you're pregnant and have celiac.

Wednesday I saw the specialist. He took one look at my blood work and said I am officially diagnosed with celiac disease. He'd normally do a biopsy/scope too, just because it's a life long and serious condition, but feels my blood test was a strong enough indicator to make the diagnosis. In March, he wants to test my levels again and see that they're going down. If they're not, it means I'm getting gluten somewhere I'm not aware of I guess. Once baby is born and weaned, he'll want me to do a challenge and then do a scope and biopsy, just to see how far along my disease was.

The doc was really pleased with how informed I was, which was kind of flattering I thank this site and a couple good books I picked up!

He also said most of my symptoms sound more like IBS, but is hoping they'll resolve with gluten removed.

I've been "glutened" once - yesterday. Interestingly, it seems I was right in thinking that gluten was making my asthma worse (I started noticing a couple months ago that after eating bread, pasta, etc., I'd be really wheezy). The gluten was hiding in a raspberry milkshake. A few sips had my chest tightening. I stopped drinking it, and ate my salad, and things eased up. Took another sip of the milkshake, and immediate tightening again. Then everything went right through me if you kwim. I actually think that's really positive, that I can tell from just a tiny bit if there's contamination. Makes it easier to recognize it and limit it!
