Talking To New Gp About My Gluten-intolerance/celiac

Hi. I'm totally new here so hope I'm doing this posting thing right. I am feeling very confused about what kind of doctor to see, who to trust, etc. New enough to this that I feel nervous about how to talk to doctors about my celiac disease (that I'm pretty sure about but they might doubt).

I have been gluten-free for about seven months. Have not had a blood test or biopsy, but had the Enterolab test about 4 months into the gluten-free diet, and even then the results were pretty dramatic, and I have two sets of the genes. It appears that I probably have celiac disease. Most of my symptoms have subsided except for bloating and still have the loose stool. I am convinced and don't feel a need to have the biopsy to convince me, but it's time for my annual checkup with an MD and my old family doc has left the practice and i have to see a new doc. Since my last MD was clueless about celiac I am afraid I'm expecting the same from the new one. I will of course report what's been going on and I'm expecting that he will want to refer me to a GI doc.

The naturopath has helped me tremendously, but I wonder if it's safe to just assume it's celiac and continue my gluten-free diet and do the naturopath-supplements route and assume it'll heal, or if there's a good reason to get checked out by a GI doc. i am not going to be willing to reintroduce gluten and make myself sick to get a biopsy at this point...I don't think....but could they still do a blood test and have the results be meaningful, after 7 months gluten-free?

I know there's a lot of knowledge here and experience with various kinds of medical pros, so I'd appreciate any thoughts...

thanks.

University Of Chicago Celiac Center

I have an appointment tomorrow, after waiting months, at the Celiac Center at the University of Chicago with Dr. Kupfer. I have already been diagnosed by biopsy by a local dr, but I wanted to go here for them to look over everything and check anything else that needs to be checked, etc... I figure if this resources close and available to me, I should go!

In the paperwork it sent to me, it said to expect my visit to take several hours! Is that true? what exactly will they do? lol.

I have copies of my records, and am also bringing copies of the slides from my endoscopy..will they go over them right there and then?

I am just curious what to expect and of anyone else's experience with them.

Thanks!!!

Well, its pretty self-explanatory... I need to find a doctor for my family that knows about Celiac, in the LaSalle/Peru, Ottawa, Spring Valley, Mendota area... I'm willing to drive a little bit, but I'd prefer to not have to drive to Peoria cause that is a haul! But, it seems like Peoria is the place to be lately, so if it comes down to it...

Thanks for any help!

Immune System Excessive Cold/flu Killer?

Over the last few years I have noticed an increase in my immune systems strength as I've changed my diet over to gluten free. Students and friends get sick around me as usual but I show very little symptoms and in fact recovery very quickly. The only issue I have if this is true is, my system is working over time and when I'm partly feeling symptoms I'm not taking care of my health as if I were sick. Feels like I'm getting over taxed not to mention I could be getting those around me sick (I'm a virus carrying "friend") and they don't really appreciate that. Any insight into this little issue or proof if true or false?

GW

Bone Density Test

I just found some old test results from a bone scan from 2004. In 2/6/2004 my bone scan was T-Score -0.9 and Z-Score was 0.8, now 10/7/09 it's T-Score -1.1 and Z-Score is -1.0. I know my most recent score isn't good but is the difference considered a very big change (meaning that I am losing it very quickly) or considered what would be expected with someone with Celiac Disease?

Health Care Reform And "unnecessary" Tests

Hi everyone,
I've been hearing a lot lately about how "cutting waste" from the health care system in the US is the way they are planning on paying for health care reform. Now, I'm all for reform, as I *have* insurance and still have racked up thousands of dollars in debt over the last couple of years trying to get the proper diagnosis. However, a lot of the chatter lately (news, pundits, etc) has been about how doctors run soooo many unnecessary tests. Well, if I had not pressured my doctors into "unnecessary" tests, I would still be very sick. The attitude that the doctor knows all and is in 100% control of your testing is dangerous, because they are not all as educated as we would hope. What about all the drugs that I was prescribed, paid for, and took unnecessarily because the proper tests were not done to begin with?
It is really unsettling to me that we could potentially be facing a system where we can't get the care we need simply because someone else thinks that the proper care is "wasteful." I still don't have an actual diagnosis even though I have been gluten free for 10 months and this makes me worry a little bit- if I were ever to be hospitalized, I hear getting gluten free food is very difficult, and I imagine it would be even harder without a "real" diagnosis.

Anyone else have opinions on this?

Endo/colo Of 8 Year Old In 3 Days

Hi,
This is my first time to post and I hope this works.
I'm looking for some emotional support regarding my daughter's endoscopy and colonoscopy in the next few days.
My daughter is 8 years old. She has dental enamal defects on her permanent front teeth (discoloration and mottling) and her 6 year molars are also defective and are chipping away. She was not ill in the first year of her life, I never took any medications during pregnancy, and I have never taken Tetracycline. She has had intestinal problems off and on for years (cramping, gas, loose stools). Her celiac panel was negatine except that her total IgA was 31 (normal 33-236) and her IgG was 80 (normal 0-15). Her iron/plasma was 45 (normal 50-120) with MCV and MCH also lower than normal. Her absolute eosinophil count was .24 (normal .01-.19) She had a barium study which did not indicate any IBS. She has sleep problems and very obvious mood swings with irritablity. She seems to have a lactose intollerance.
Any feedback before the endoscopy/colonoscopy? I am fearful that her Peds GI will not see any Villi damage and therefore discount all of the other indications/problems that we are having. Any suggestions?
