Has anyone here tried the Medifast plan while on a Gluten Free diet? I am 130lbs overweight, and am considering this option. They have shakes that are <10ppm Gluten. Any thoughts?

I have been on medifast and stayed on it after finding out I had a gluten allergy. I of course avoid the chicken noodle soup and I am still slightly concerned about the oatmeal but have not had any reactions to the shakes, pudding, hot drinks, new meal replacement bars. Hope that helps you!

Hi Jenn, Welcome to the board!

I had several very detailed conversations with a physician who was supporting Medifast and also researched the ingredients thoroughly. Most of the products are heavy on soy and dairy which can be problematic for new celiacs. A few products have a label saying they contain 10 ppm or less of gluten (and at least one that says 2300+ppm gluten). Most of the other products do not mention their gluten content and none of the products claim to be gluten-free or suitable for celiacs. I also question the use of oats as only certified gluten-free oats are safe for celiacs.

Medifast is rather expensive and I recommend verifying the gluten-free status before moving forward. You may have better success with a registered dietician familiar with celiac.

Take care,

Janet

I have used MF with great success (lost 68 lbs in 5 months). I am allergic to wheat, I am not celiac or gluten intolerant so keep that in mind, but I do get very itchy when I consume any wheat, even in small amounts. I ate the bars, shakes, puddings, oatmeal and hot drinks with no trouble.
