  2. Abdominal Pain - Worse In Morning

    I had an ulcer years ago... doesn't feel the same as far as I can remember, and the pain this time is in the lower/central abdomen - my ulcer pain was under my ribs. I had this pain before being diagnosed - and in general, it went away with my other symptoms when I went on the gluten-free diet. I just wish I knew what causes it. I could be wrong - it could be gas pain, I suppose. I just don't get it. It's a deep stabbing-like pain. Anyhow, I'm going to go do some searching & reading to see what I can find... I'll let you all know if I get enlightened!
  3. Has anyone else ever had bad abdominal pain, particularly in the morning? Over my 3.5y on a gluten-free diet since being diagnosed, occasionally I have these spells where, even though I cannot easily identify any dietary changes, I feel horrible again...and then the symptoms resolve almost as suddenly as they came on. One particular symptom is abdominal pain - and I don't mean gas pain. Pain is so hard to describe but I'll do my best... it's the worst in the morning but doesn't necessarily ever go away during these "spells", it gets worse with pressure (like if you suck in your stomach or press into your stomach), and it doesn't get better or worse with eating. Sometimes just taking a deep breath makes me feel the pain sharply. I have often wondered whether this is an indication of intestinal damage - do you think the damage caused by gluten is painful? For the most part I've done very well on the diet, so it's hard to imagine that these sick spells that may be caused by a mysterious source of gluten would cause enough damage to cause pain... but it's just a thought. I've had severe gas pain before - I'm fairly certain this pain is due to something else.... I just don't know what! Let me know if you have ever felt this way or know what causes it. Thanks. Kerri

    In case any one is interested. Here's some info on the discrepancy between the commonly reported 3500cal/lb fat, and the calculation of 4086cal/lb fat... "Q. In books on nutrition, I'm told that to lose one pound of fat it's necessary either to reduce my food intake by 3500 calories or to exercise so that 3500 calories are burned. How is the value of 3500 determined? If fat contains 9 calories per gram, and there are 454 grams in a pound, then there should be 4086 calories in a pound of fat-- not 3500. A. The nutrition books are correct-- 3500 calories per pound of fat is not an absolute amount, but it's very close. However, your math is correct, too. Here is the story. When we burn fat, or other nutrients, heat is produced, which is measured in calories. As you note, each gram of fat generates 9 calories, and 454 grams equals one pound. But a pound of fat is not all fat. It's about 10% water. All of our body tissues--fat, muscle, bone, skin--contain some water. And water has zero calories. In addition, not all the nutrients we eat are completely absorbed from the digestive tract to meet metabolic needs. In the case of fat, roughly 5% is eliminated in the feces. This 10% water content and 5% non-absorbed fat accounts for the 15% difference between your calculated 4086 calories and the actual 3500 calories in a pound of fat. Two other minor points: The calories can be reduced when the meal is high in fiber. Fiber speeds the movement of food through the digestive system, there is less time for the nutrients to be absorbed before they are eliminated. So the non-absorbed fat could be a bit higher. Also, the amount of heat generated from fat differs a little for various foods (depending on fatty acid content). For example, there are 9.50 calories in one gram of meat compared with 9.30 calories for vegetables and fruits and 9.25 calories for dairy products." from another Geeky Scientist
  5. Dr. Jeffrey Stein Columbia Presbyterian New York, NY 212-305-5444 WONDERFUL!!! He's a one-man show... he does it all from taking your basic vitals to prescribing Rx and diagnostic testing. Kind, compassionate human being. He's very cautious and thorough.
  6. Sit Ups Cause Pain

    Here are a few ab exercises to do without crunching..... 1. Plank: push-up position except you are on your forearms rather than your hands. Hold your body flat as a plank from head to heels, and hold your core tight (imagine pulling your belly button to your spine). Hold for 15 seconds to start, build up to 1 minute. To increase challenge, increase time holding the position. 2. Oblique Side Raise: lie on right side & fold arms across chest. Keep legs together & lift them off the floor as you reach your top (left) elbow toward your hip. This is a small but effective movement for the obliques. 10 reps on each side. 3. Knee Raise (lower abs): lie on back with feet flat on floor (knees bent), and hands on floor by your hips. Use lower abs to bring knees up toward chest, then slowly return feet back to floor to starting position. As feet barely touch floor, bring knees back up to chest. 12 reps. Control movement on way up & down. Since these exercises do not involve crunching your middle, see if you can do these without pain. I often have an indescribable pain in my abdomen that isn't likely muscular or gas pain. It's aggravated by sucking in my stomach. Pain is so hard to describe, but maybe this is something like what you have. Anyhow, when I have this pain, ab exercises are tough, but I seem to be able to do the ones listed above more comfortably even with this pain. Good luck!
  7. Worrying About My Marathon

    When's your marathon? Maybe it was last weekend? Anyhow, if you haven't raced yet (or even if you have) here are my suggestions after doing several marathons, triathlons & other races since being on the gluten-free diet... Usually race-day anxiety gets the best of me, so I find it very hard to eat too much prerace without upsetting my stomach. What I have found works best is eating solid, balanced meals especially the day(s) before the race. Be sure you are getting plenty of carbs & protein, and of course plenty of fluids in these preceding days. It's very important to try to stick with stuff you know you can tolerate... now is not the time to try new foods. My favorites are brown rice, bananas, peanut butter, Gatorade, applesauce, and chicken. My best prerace foods are smoothies (favorite recipe: skim milk, vanilla yogurt, banana, & peanut butter...yum!), and fruit (banana, apple or orange). I really don't eat too much before the race making it perhaps even more important to keep fueling throughout the race. I do well with GU and Gatorade. Also, postrace be sure to get protein & carbs into you within 30 minutes to 1h after the race to help recovery. Of course, be sure to keep replenishing fluids for the rest of the day, and even into the following few days. Lastly keep moving after the race... you may want to collapse, but you'll feel a lot better if you walk for a while immediately after, later in the day, and also the next day. Go for a walk or bike ride to keep your legs moving. As I said, sometimes race-day anxiety ruins even the best laid plans, so be sure to stick with foods you trust. You want to enjoy the race. Remember there will always be other races, so if things have been particularly tough for you lately, don't overdo it out there. Do what you can, and when you are healthier, you can tackle another event. Best of luck to you! Be sure to let us know how it goes!!!
  8. My GI doc is Dr. Jeffrey Stein ~ also at Columbia Health Center, but not officially in the Celiac Disease Center. I did see Dr. Susie Lee after 1 year on the gluten-free diet. I'm a grad student at Columbia so it was convenient enough for me to go see her. Dr. Stein recommended I see her since they have so many on-going studies, though since I had already improved on the diet my meeting with her was kind of uneventful. Anyhow, she is very nice, but I also highly recommend Dr. Stein. Also, a friend of mine has HIGHLY recommended Dr. Fasano in MD. Her brother & sister both have Celiac, and the whole family has a lot of respect for him.
  9. Hi! I've had a great GI doctor here in NYC for the past few years (Dr. Jeffrey Stein...he's WONDERFUL!), but I'm now moving to CT for a new job, and am looking for a new GI doctor for my Celiac. Any suggestions? I'll be working in New Haven, and living somewhere between there and the Danbury area. Thanks! I just saw bluckii's post from 9/11 re: GI docs in Central CT. These are somewhat helpful, but if anyone knows of other good GIs in Western CT that would still be great.

    Sorry you're so sick!!! As for Pam (original), I stopped using it because it has "grain alcohol" in it. I'm not entirely certain if that is a problem, but it seems like it would be. I switched to Mazola and have been fine with it. Good luck recovering!!!

  12. Detecting Other Dietary Sensitivities

    The continuing saga of Kerri's health..... I had the worst day since my diagnosis back in 2004 yesterday! I had a wedding shower & bachelorette dinner to go to. The shower was fine...I talked with the server about a salad they had on the menu, and everything seemed like it would be fine. Most of the food we got I couldn't eat, so I basically only ate my salad and 2 glasses of wine. When I got home I was still hungry, so I made some brown rice....normally, I'm perfectly fine with that. But I ended up with so much pain, gas, and D that I didn't know what to do with myself. I had about 4 hours between the shower & bachelorette, during which I was hoping to get some work done (I'm trying to write my disseration!), but instead I spent the whole time being ill & trying to figure out where I'd gone wrong. I was going to bail out on the bachelorette dinner, but I really wanted to be there for my friend. We went to a Thai restaurant, and I ordered steamed white rice, and veggies sauteed in garlic. Once the food came, I basically just picked at the rice, but hardly ate much because I was still quite uncomfortable. Finally, I just gave up and grabbed a cab home. Once I got home, I couldn't even sleep because of the pain. What has happened to me?! This morning I ordered the Paleo Diet book. I don't want to put anything into me right now...yet, I'm starving. I had a LaraBar this morning and it sent me immediately to the bathroom. ARGH!!!!!! (Thanks for letting me vent!)
  13. Fasting

    Hi Sara, I've never tried fasting, but I feel the same way you do. Right now the last thing I want to do is eat anything. I had been doing seemingly well on the gluten-free diet, but lately I've been so miserable. I can't seem to eat anything without feeling sick. Yesterday I had the worst day since I've been diagnosed (~2.5 years ago). I'd be interested to see if anyone has any input on fasting to kind of clear out the system and let it settle down. Also, what others have suggested to me elsewhere here is to try an elimination diet, like the "caveman" or Paleo diet. I just ordered the Paleo Diet book this morning. Basically, you eat fruits, veggies, meats, seafood... no grains, legumes, dairy, soy, processed sugars, starchy/root veggies. I'm going to give it a try. Good luck
  14. It sounds like you are making very good progress actually. It can be tricky getting off drugs like klonopin as you must wean off slowly, like you did, and it can definitely take some time to be completely drug and symptom free. You are wise to take one day at a time... relish in the things you can do today that you couldn't do yesterday. Keeping a list of these things my help encourage you when you have bad days. I would be very careful with your diet since at least some studies do seem to show improvement with the gluten-free diet. It looks like you've had a quite restricted diet for some time though so I suppose you are very on top of the foods you eat. Anyhow, good luck. I hope you have many successful cooking days! I'll let you know if I come across any more research that may be helpful.

    Hi Noelle, Your nickname makes me laugh..."Can'tEvenEatRice!".... sometimes I feel like my body wants no part of consuming food. I actually considered giving up all grains too...corn in particular. My concern is that going dairy-free has been tough enough, so I thought I'd go with one thing at a time. Basically, if I just live on fruits & veggies for a while with a little chicken for some good protein, then maybe my body will calm down. The reality is that dairy-free has just changed my symptoms. Some things are definitely better, but now new symptoms have popped up, though I'm tempted to blame slightly OD-ing on soy lately. Anyhow, good luck to you & thanks for the post. It seems like we're dealing with some similar issue so keep me updated if you find out anything that helps you, and I'll do the same. I'm going to give myself a full week of dairy-free and re-evaluate...still sick, then I'll try grain-free too. I'm running out of foods to eat! Take care.
