    1. cooki.dough added a post in a topic Tips For A New Celiac In Halifax, Ns - Canada!

I'm also from the Halifax-Dartmouth area and gluten-free so I'll do my best to help you out. As for purchasing gluten-free things, Superstore and Sobeys both have a GREAT selection of items. You can find breads, doughnuts, tortillas, ect in the natural section. Same thing goes for Pete's Frootique (Spring Garden Rd) and Planet Organic (Quinpool rd). The best bread band I found in these store's is definitely Udi's, although O'Doughs bread is also fantastic. If you frequent the Seaport market, Schoolhouse Gluten Free makes the most amazing baked items--breads, muffins, cookies, cakes. Their Focaccia rounds are probably the best thing I've ever ever had!

There are definitely so many restaurants in the area offering gluten-free options, but my favorite would have to be the Wooden Monkey. It was the first place I ever got to have gluten free pizza and gluten free beer. Also, if you're a fan of sushi, the wait staff at Hamachi house are EXTREMELY helpful, and even have gluten-free soy sauce. Boston Pizza also has a gluten free crust. If you really want to see the whole list of places though, I found so many of my options through the celiac scene website. It breaks down areas, and lists all the gluten-free restaurant options. It pretty much made it possible for me to be able to eat out!

Good luck! Hopefully I didn't overwhelm you too much.

As soon as I read this, I knew I had to try it. I got my cheese-free, but the crust is pretty good. Although they could be a little more generous with their toppings...

I didn't see them mentioned yet, but FoodShouldTasteGood chips are amazing corn chips which come in a large variety of flavors and are certified gluten-free. My personal favorites are the olive or the jalepeno, but like I said, there are tons to choose from and they are very very tasty!

I heard about that! Zooey Deschanel was the guest host, and she apparently can eat gluten (and is vegan, and doesn't eat soy). That's really cool. Especially because she's my boyfriend's favorite actress. Must find this episode now.

The Simply Bar could be a good investment if you can find them. They all are gluten-free, dairy-free, low fat, high protein and I just checked and two of the flavors are under 10 grams of sugar (Lemon coconut, which is my favorite, and the cinnamon raisin).

Here is the website for you to check out:

      Hope that this helped!

Wow that's not good at all, especially at my local grocery store they have them labeled as gluten-free in the freezer even though it doesn't say it on the bag. I should tell them that these are not safe.

I've never had the Cheddar flavor, but I adore the vegetable and multigrain flavors. I think the multigrain may be my favorite. So good.

Gluten-free Bread Reference On The New 90210
I'm not sure how many people here watch the new 90210, but on last night's episode there was a reference to gluten-free bread! It was just a silly little moment thrown in there, when two of the characters were discusses living in Beverly Hills, but I thought it was cute.

It went something along the lines of this: "...And gluten-free bread... and I don't even know what gluten is, but I like the option of not having to eat it." It was randomly thrown in there, but it made me smile. They also talked about it at the very end of the episode when they sit down to french toast.

I agree with making sure you have lots of things you know you can eat. I know when I'm around friends I always make sure I surround myself with foods I know are safe--like for popcorn, make sure you have your own bowl of it to enjoy, and that it's not near the other kids foods.

      Pumpkin Recipes?
I'm searching for something that tastes like pumpkin pie. My mother usually makes crust-less pumpkin pie (weight-watchers recipe, and fabulous), but because it contains evaporated milk--and I'm recently dairy free--I won't be able to enjoy it. Does anyone know any good recipes for something that tastes like pumpkin pie. Oh, and did I mention it needs to be really low in fat?

I'm sorry if this sounds really demanding. This thanksgiving just seems like it's going to be depressing, and something even a little traditional--and pumpkin tasting--would be wonderful. Thank you SO much if you can help me out--I appreciate it so much.

      You're all fabulous.
