  1. The company emailed me and all but the French Vanilla are gluten free according to what they said. The French Vanilla has barley in it. Marsha
  2. I have enjoyed the Torani sugar free specialty syrups in the past in my hot chocolate or coffee. I am wondering if any of these are gluten free? I have the following flavors: Irish Cream:purified water,glycerine,natural flavors, caramel color, ptassium sorbate, citric acid, sodium bensoate, zanthan gum,sucralose(SPLENDA brand), sodium citrate, and acesulfame potassium Vanilla:same ingredients except vanilla extract and doesn't have glycerine Raspberry:Same as Irish cream but has FD&C red 40 Hazelnut:Pure cane sugar, water, natural flavors, citric acid, sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate, FD&C red 40 Mandarin Orange: Pure cane sugar,water, natural flavors,tartaric acid, sodium benzoate, FD&C red 40 Thanks for any help you can give.   3. Oh, boy. This will be a challenge. I've been gluten-free for a month with only a couple accidents. But I don't store things separate like you mentioned. My kitchen is so short on cupboard space I have to store lots of food in the basement and all my pots and pans get stored either in the oven or on top of the stove! It will be a reall trick to figure out how to reserve one whole cupboard just for gluten-free stuff! I suppose I need to do it though to prevent accidents. We are just so short on space around here this house stresses me out. There is just stuff everywhere. I try to clean it up and put things away, but there is not room for everything and then my kids and hubby come along and leave stuff out again. It drives me crazy. Am I the only one in this household who has the technology to put things away???? Marsha
  4. I have been gluten-free for about a month now. I used to have frequent episodes of bloating and pain. The last episode before I went gluten-free was so severe I couldn't sit up or stand up without severe abdominal pain. That was the last straw for me. Since going gluten free, the only time I have bloated bad was when I accidentally got gluten and yesterday with my period. For some reason, I just blew up after dinner last night and it was a combination of cramps and bloating gas/pain. I took two anti gass tablets and laid on the massager and it finally let up. Then I took my muscle relaxant and was able to sleep through the night. This morning the cramping was as bad as labor pain, but I was able to get a handle on it with Tylenol. But to make a long story short except for my period, I only bloat and gas up when I get gluten now. I hope that doesn't change except for my period....I'd like to not do it then either. It sounds to me like maybe you are hit and miss with being gluten free. If you have developed food allergies while being celiac, you may still have those food allergies and don't know it. It could very well be an allergic reaction to something you are eating. I would suggest keeping a food diary. Write down everything you eat and the time you ate it as well as any symptoms you get and what time the onset was. After about 2 weeks of this, go back through your diary and see if there is any coralation (I know I spelled that wrong) between what you have eaten and the onset of gas/bloating. If there seems to be a pattern, try eliminating the food that looks suspicious for a week and see if symptoms let up. Good luck! Marsha
  5. I live in wheat country. My husband and my BIL have both asked me if wheat dust in the air might affect celiacs. Being new to this stuff, I am wondering too, since I am new to being celiac. I am think especially during wheat harvest.....can this have an adverse effect on me being a celiac?? Does anybody know? Marsha
  6. "I appreciate everyone here. It is such a comfort to know that I can share Celiac concerns. Having this message board has been a true blessing. The people around me just say" Whats the big deal, just dont eat bread. " If they only" I will be going to my parent's for Mother's Day weekend. My sister and her husband and another lady friend of my mom's will be there too. I know I will get baraged with questions about why I am eating the way I do. My brother in law will be especially challenging. He is always so sarcastic and negative about everything. I know he will try to make me feel foolish for eating so strangely. I am praying it all goes smoothly. Marsha
  7. My doctor was baffled about my canker sores that had been reocurring since Dec. We tried all sorts of stuff and he was at the end of his resources to help me. Someone on another forum I belong to suggested I try looking into celiac. I have 13 of the symptoms and one complication (severe osteoporosis). So I began a gluten free diet. Within three days the sores were gone. I only had reocurrances when I challenged with two Girl Scout cookies and once when I mistakenly drank my son's water after he had been eating soda crackers and there was backwash in it. (I know, EEEEEEW!) Anyway, I wrote letter to my doctor about my results with the diet and told him if he knew how to do the blood tests or knew the labs here could process them, I'd be happy to come in for blood work and although reluctantly, I would also do the biopsy if he really wanted me too. His nurse called yesterday. Apparently no one here does the blood work because he said the only option is the biopsy for a definite diagnosis. However, he said if I am having good results with the diet to just continue it. He didn't think the biopsy was necessary unless I just wanted it. He also congratulated me on figuring out the cure to my canker sores....said, "Good Work!" I am happy with the decision to just continue the diet without a medical diagnosis. I've had good results. Would I abandon the diet if I had the biopsy and it came back negative? No, I don't think so. Marsha
  8. I decided to write a letter to my doctor. Here it is: Dear......, As you will remember, I have been to see you several times over the last couple of months complaining of reoccurring canker sores in my mouth, some of them have been quite large. I have had trouble with this since the 3rd week in December. We tried switching from Vioxx to Celebrex with no results. I tried going without the NSAIDS for at least a week with no results. You gave me Valtrex to try and it never helped either. As a last resort you talked of sending me to a dermatologist. I have been doing research on my own on the causes of canker sores. When I read about Celiac, I was surprised to find that I have at least 13 of the symptoms they list for this disease as well as severe osteoporosis which is listed as a complication of Celiac. Of the symptoms that are listed for this disease, I have been experiencing the following.... Abdominal pain.... Reoccurring Abdominal bloating.... Reoccurring Foul-smelling stool.... all the time Gas...reoccurring Iron deficiency.... Recently diagnosed Fatigue.... most of the time Joint pain.....comes and goes Muscle cramps....comes and goes Canker sores......almost constant since Dec. Skin rash.....comes and appears on the back of my neck suddenly....burns and itches and puffs up like a severe burn and lasts for several days and disappears Indigestion.....occasional Constipation......reoccurring Hypoglycemic episodes......reoccurring Osteoporosis.....severe I decided to try the gluten free diet for celiac to see if it would make any difference....mainly to the canker sores since this was the most troublesome symptom to me. The abdominal symptoms I have had for years since I was a child, but I never said anything about it to anyone because I just thought that was normal. After three days on the gluten free diet the canker sores have all healed and I have not had any new ones show up. As of this writing it has been eight days. Not only have the canker sores stopped, but I no longer have the abdominal pain, bloating and gas and I have more energy than I used too. I realize there are tests that can be done to confirm Celiac. But I also realize a person needs to be consuming gluten for them to turn out right. I am feeling so much better eating this way that I hate to mess myself up just to be able to confirm the diagnosis of Celiac. However, if you know how to do the blood tests or know that the local labs here will process them, I would be willing to eat gluten foods for a short time and have the blood work done. I really do not want to do the small intestinal biopsy though and my husband is really discouraging me from having it done. He doesn
  9. I tried to respond to someone else's post but it appears to have sent it to the person and not posted it to the board. I have about a dozen of the symptoms of Celiac plus the complication of severe osteoporosis. The symptom that finally sent me over the edge was canker sores. I had them repeatedly for four months before I decided maybe a gluten free diet would help. I started the diet on Sat a week ago and the cankers all healed within three days. I stopped having pain/cramping with BM's. I stopped feeling bloated. I have more energy. Here's my dilemma. Is it imperitive that I go through all the tests to confirm Celiac? If eating this way makes me feel better what is the point? Then again, if I were hospitalized, would anybody listen to me if I tried to tell them I couldn't eat certain things if it is not documented in my medical record? What are the benefits to being diagnosed by the medical establishment as opposed to just listening to your body and knowing what you need to stay away from? Is the diagnosis important so that people don't think you are off your rocker for being so "picky" about your foods? Is it a way to feel validated when people question you? I am just really confused as to whether I should pursue a diagnosis or not. I am trying to figure out what the benefit vs risk is worth. I think I will go talk to my doctor about it and get his take on the whole thing. But I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Even if I did get tested and say the tests actually came back negative, I'd still stay on the diet knowing how much better I feel this way. Marsha
