    1. ItchyMeredith added a post in a topic I Feel So Angry

It took me about 4-6 months to stop feeling angry. Every now and again I still feel sorry for myself but I'm doing fine. I try to look at the bright side: celiac is a chronic disease but it can be completely controlled by diet. If I have to have a chronic disease, I'll take this one.

Hang in there. What you are going through is normal.

Carbs are the only think keeping me from throwing up!!!! Gluten-free carbs are just not appealing but of course I don't have a choice!!!

*I wouldn't worry about one glutening. Just be sure to ask what the marinade is made of next time!

    6. ItchyMeredith added a post in a topic Pregnant With Celiac

I am 7 weeks pregnant and I have been gluten free since June 07. This pregnancy isn't any different from my other ones...before my diagnosis. I am just extra careful about everything that goes in my mouth. My doctor does not seemed concerned at all as long as I am gluten-free.
      Best of health!!!

      First Trimester Cravings- Celiac Complaints!
I am 7 weeks pregnant and have been faithfully gluten-free since June 07. It has NEVER been harder than the last 2 weeks. I can't tell you how much I wish I could just order a pizza! This is really tough. I know that there are gluten-free alternatives but I am too sick to cook anything from scratch. I am completely miserable and cursing celiac disease! It must be the pregnancy hormones because I was very much at peace with celiac until now.
Oh well...there is nothing I can do but deal with this and eat my Glutino's frozen pizza. There is GREAT news on my horizon: Pizza Fusion is coming to my town in January so that's something to look forward to...till then I SUFFER!!! OH how I suffer!

Thanks for listening to my rant. I am usually not much of a complainer but a deprived pregnant person isn't a pretty sight!

    9. ItchyMeredith added a post in a topic Question About Breastfeeding And Honey

From KellyMom- a site I really trust!!!!

Can a nursing mother eat honey?
Honey is not a problem for mom to eat. The gut flora of adults and children over a year old are able to fend off the botulism spores that may be present in honey, and render them harmless. Since the spores would be killed in your gastrointestinal tract, they would not make it into your bloodstream and therefore cannot be present in your milk.

A baby's gut can't defend itself against the botulism spores, and so they can colonize the intestinal tract, germinate and release botulinum neurotoxin. As a result, honey is not recommended for babies under a year old. It's recommended that you avoid giving baby anything that contains honey, or make sure that the cooking process kills any botulism spores that might be present. To kill botulism spores, the food must be cooked at 240 degrees Fahrenheit (this requires a pressure cooker) for at least 15 minutes. Botulism spores are very heat resistant - it takes more than six hours of boiling at 212 degrees Fahrenheit to kill the spores. The toxin is less resistant - boiling foods (at 212 degrees Fahrenheit) for 10 minutes will destroy the toxin.

    10. ItchyMeredith added a post in a topic Possible Pregnant Too Early To Tell

When do you think you ovulated??? With an early result test you should only test after 10 days past ovulation. Though I am one to talk- I am only 8 days past ovulation and I tested today (negative- duh). Check out There is a wealth of information there! Also- is a fun site to obsess about possible symptoms.
      Good Luck!!!

    11. ItchyMeredith added a post in a topic Vegetarian Celiac With Nut Allergy

Hi there! I don't have much advice on the flour topic. I would most certainly stop baking with the wheat one though and do some research about nut safe gluten free ones. There has to be some good ones out there. Unfortunately, the one I love is rice/almond. Food allergies can be so tricky. My son is allergic (with one anaphylactic reaction) to milk so I am constantly scrutinizing ingredients too.

I am a vegetarian too and I have never craved meat or compromised my vegetarianism in any way. There are some great books: The Gluten-Free Vegetarian, The Gluten-Free Vegan, Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker (not all gluten-free) and my favorite, Veganomicon (NOT all gluten-free and has many nut recipes). Though not all of these books are gluten-free you can adapt many of the recipes to be gluten-free.

There is also a board for vegetarian celiacs: it's pretty slow but there is a lot of good information.
There are also two Yahoo groups:

Good Luck!!! Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

    12. ItchyMeredith added a post in a topic Parents With Celiac

When my son saw Dr. Pietzak- a pediatric celiac specialist- she said that the best window is between 7 and 12 months while they are still breastfeeding. I understand that you are past that window but I just wanted to relay what she said.

I had the same experience! I have been to Universal but I didn't eat because they sure didn't seem to know what they were talking about.

      Disneyland was great!
I went to Pizza Port in Tomorrowland and they made me a gluten free pizza! My son who is allergic to dairy as well got gluten free pasta with tomato basil sauce!

      It was so great!

      Congrats! That is so exciting!!!!

Check out the Arms Reach Co-Sleeper. It is like a bassinet but it is attached to your bed. I used one for both of my babies in the first months. There is a pic of twins too!

    15. ItchyMeredith added a post in a topic Could Undiagnosed Celiac Lead To Rage/mood Swings?

Wow- it does sound like gluten is the reason. Thankfully, he has never been physically abusive- but his ups and downs have been severe enough in the past to be diagnosed as bipolar. Since he doesn't believe in psychiatry though- he dismisses the diagnosis and any treatment. I was hopeful that he was going to stick with the diet. He is very self-disciplined and was doing very well- but I guess he wasn't seeing enough of a change to stick to it. I will grant him that his diet was very complicated- mostly by choice. For the last 6 months he has been an organic gluten-free vegan.

I'll have a chat with him- maybe he will listen to reason.
