  • Interests My daughter has celiac disease and I have been a stay at home mom for the last five years. I am interested in being involved with celiac groups and helping others know more about the disease. <br />I love to decorate and be crafty.
  1. My daughter who is in Kindergarden is "playing up" her Celiac at school. The school called me to tell me she said her stomach was hurting because of her celiac. She was in the nurses station for about 30 minutes. I ,without thinking, let her have french fries last night from Wendy' she truely was probably feeling bad, however, when I picked her up... the second we came home she wanted to play and have a good old time and eat. Then later she said she doesn't like her school. So, I am having trouble with the fine line of wanting to acknowledge her Celiac but also make sure she isn't doing it to get out of something. Whenever she doesn't want to be somewhere she does this. Usually, I know she is doing it because I watch her diet very carefully but this time I messed up. And then there are times when she is not in my care and she might have honestly ate gluten in something and feel really bad. She use to throw up (bial) when she had an episode before we new what was wrong... but now she just feels bad. I am just wondering if anyone has had a simular problem and how you delt with it? Also, what to tell the school if this happens again? Because usually she feels better after about 1 to 2 hours if it is truely a celiac issue. Do I tell them to keep her she can participate when she feels up to it or what? I certainly can not be taking off work a couple of times a month...just to bring her home and her tell me she is fine now.
  2. My daughter has celiac and we hesitate to eat out with her very often but, of course, there are times when you have no choice. I find that the only way, in most cases, my daughter won't consume gluten in a restraunt is to always ask for the manager. Explain every little detail about what has to happen in order for your daughter to not get a cross contamination from others preparing her food. They need to wash their hands, prepare the food on a serface that has not had bread of any kind on it, put gloves on, and also make sure you know if there are any hidden gluten in what is being prepared. If you have to even ask for the chef because the wait staff really most of the time look at you like you are nuts and think you are being a huge inconvienence. But it is better to be an inconvienence than to have your daughter get sick. There have been occasions when we have ordered chicken and relized that the chicken had been marinated in a sauce that had gluten in it prior to them cooking the chicken. Carmel color and modified food startch are the biggest hidden ingridents to look out for. They are in so many things that you wouldn't think that they would be in. And our rule of thumb is if we are not 100% sure of the ingrediants or how it will be prepared our daughter can not have it, no matter what. Hoped that helped.
  3. Hello! My daughter has celiac and was never offically diagnosed. She started showing signs and symptoms at 3 years old. They did a biopsy and it came back mostly negative. However, I went ahead and put her on a gluten free diet and all of her symptoms went away. So don't give up!!! Make sure you are truely giving her a gluten free is really easy to have cross contamination with this disease. We have to use a seperate peanut butter jar for Lilly, my daughter, and that sort of thing so that the bread crumbs are not mixed in. My daughter is now almost 6 years old and being gluten free has been hard but she feels so much better. I wish you a lot of success with finding out if your daughter has celiac. Hang in there and stick to the diet for awhile to really give her stomach and intestine healing time.
