  1. Lisa - are you interested in participating? Volunteers Needed for a Research Study at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) A doctoral student in Exercise and Sport Psychology is currently seeking people with Celiac Disease for a research study looking at the relationship between physical activity, aerobic fitness, health-related quality of life and cognition. Participants should be diagnosed (blood or biopsy) with Celiac Disease and between the ages of 20 and 75 to participate. The testing is occuring in April, May, and June at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Lisa is also going to travel to Asheville, NC, Durham, NC, Newtown, PA, or Naples, FL. Email her at for specific dates in those cities. If you traveled to UNCG, the study would be conducted at the Health and Human Performance Building and our indoor track. At the other above-mentioned locations, the study will be conducted at a local meeting room, fitness center, or park. Upon arrival at the testing site, informed consent will be obtained and then information will be gathered via questionnaires that assess general demographics, gluten-free diet, and health. Next, four cognitive tests will be performed and these will assess executive function. Third, you will complete surveys about your physical activity level and health-related quality of life. Fourth, you will perform a functional fitness test. Finally, you will complete a 1-Mile Fitness Walking Test, a submaximal test of aerobic fitness. This test will require you to walk as quickly as possible for one mile.   2. to the other Lisa.... The study is going on NOW. I am conducting the phone screenings. I have been overwhelmed with the number of responses. It is hard getting back to everyone immediately, but I am trying to return emails as quickly as possible. I am very excited about the study. I returned 323 emails in the last 72 hours. I am in the process of making 97 screening calls. Testing will start in April. I am going to be away at the Society of Behavioral Medicine conference at the end of March presenting data from a pilot study that I conducted last year on celiac disease, exercise, quality of life, anxiety, and depression. So, in April, I am gong to test everyone that I can at UNCG (Greensboro, NC) and then I will be moving through NC. In early May, I will head to Bucks County - in PA - to test up there. In late May, I will be down in Naples, FL. I will be back testing in NC in June. I am self-funding this research on my graduate stipend, so the locations are limited and were picked because I have housing, car, food, etc., in both of those areas.   3. Hi all, This is Lisa Barella and I am recruiting for a research study that I am conducting for my dissertation at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Please read below and if you would like to participate or want more information, please feel free to email me or call me. Thank you! Volunteers are needed for a University of North Carolina at Greensboro Study on health-related quality of life, cognitive performance and Celiac Disease. We need adults, with Celiac Disease, ages 20 and 75, to volunteer to complete questionnaires, cognitive tests, and fitness tests. Testing will take approximately 2 hours. Ideally, you would have to be able to travel to North Carolina (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, Charlotte, Boone, or Ashville), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Montgomery, or Bucks County) or Naples, Florida. If there is enough interest in another United States city, then I would consider traveling there.     yes, that drug just makes you feel like your drank heavily and then you sleep and black in and out for 12 hours and still the next day I am sleepy. I am getting the symptoms checked out at all angles. Have you ever heard of SMA syndrome? Lisa

    Patti, thanks for the kind words. I just had a CT abdominal and CT pelvis scan done and it looks like it might be SMA syndrome that is causing the symtoms. But, I am going to check out the inner ear stuff too and finally found a good GI in Greensboro that I am going to see on the 13th of August. Lisa
  6. Hi all, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in July 2003 and have been on a strict gluten-free diet since. Recently (beginning April of 2006), I started having random nausea episodes. Within 10-15 minutes, I get severely nauseous, disoriented and can not sit up. I need to lay horizontally and take Phenergan (spelling) to get rid of the horrible symptoms. Six of the eight times have been followed by violent vomiting. For example, I was giving a presentation at Deep Roots Market on the gluten-free diet and it started at 8 PM. At 8:50 PM, I was laying on the floor at the food store, throwing up and threw up the entire way home. At 6:30 that night, I was on a spin bike teaching a class and feeling great. This is so WEIRD! This has occurred 8 times since last April and it is debilitating. I basically take the drugs to get rid of the nausea and then pass out for the next 12-20 hours. I am also shaky when these incidences occur. I have checked back and looked at the food that I have eaten and it has all seemed ok. One time, it actually happened at the doctors office and my HR was 104. (BTW: my HR resting is usually 55 ish because I am a runner). Tuesday (july 10th) this happened again while in Chapel Hill at a martini bar (drinking potato vodka!). Not sure if anyone has any ideas - but any type of "brain storming" would be great. I am generally healthy too. I run about 40-50 miles a week and teach SPIN and PUMP at the gym. Not sure what is going on and since it happens randomly, I can't prepare for it. Lisa

  10. 24 Hour Mountain Bike Race

    Heather, I have never mountain biked - but I have ran for 13 I usually combined simple and complex sugar with little protein and fat. I have PRed on Lara Bars, Almond M&Ms, a little cantelope, V8 (880 mg of sodium), Endurolytes (All of the electrolytes), and Hammer gels (as backups). They are my staple race foods. I suppose you need to run and eat at the same try stuff training and see how it works. You don't want to take a lot of fructose in because it causes stomach distress and brings water into the stomach. If you are reading labels of gels, look for maltodexrin. It is absorbed faster than a complex carb (vegable, brown rice), but slower than glucose (honey). Hammer Gels and Gu are gluten free, as are lara bars, and Almond M&Ms. The sodium and calcium in V8 are good - remember that with out electrolytes your brain can not function. They are also needed for muscle contraction. You should shoot for 200-250kcal an hour. I usually average about 220 on long races. In short races, like marathon length, I just stick with 4-5 gels and water. Good luck....Lisa

  13. Hello all, I am writing to introduce myself. I am currently a doctoral student at UNCG in the Exercise and Sport Psychology program and I am researching the impact of exercise on mental health and quality of life in people with Celiac Disease. My other interests include sports nutrition and nutrition for people with allergies, autoimmune diseases, and other chronic diseases. I have Celiac Disease and was diagnosed in July 2003. Three of my family members also have the disease. I am an active exerciser and I enjoy swimming and ultra running. In addition to my teaching and research commitments at UNCG, I also tutor elementary school math and work part-time at the YMCA teaching cycling and weight lifting classes. In April, I submitted an application to UNCG to complete a Pilot Study on Celiac Disease this summer to study the relationship between physical activity, aerobic fitness, depression, anxiety, and quality of life in Celiac Disease patients. In the first phase of the study, I will be using questionnaire data to assess physical activity and the mental health variables (that I mentioned above). In the second phase of the study, I will be conducting a V02 max test to measure aerobic fitness, and also use questionnaires to assess the mental health variables. I am hoping that the results of this research study will significantly enhance the public health’s understanding of the relationship between physical activity/aerobic fitness and depression, anxiety, and quality of life in Celiac Disease patients.   15. New Lactose Problems?

    I think it is 6 months to 2 years, but each person is different and there is refractive?? celiacs in which people don't see a huge response to the gluten-free diet. My villi seem to want to take the long road to healing. From what I was told from my GI, the villi are suppose to be in a 4:1 ratio with the cell (villi:cell), i.e the villi are 4 times higher than the cell and thus able to absorb nutrients. My villi were 0:1, i.e non existent at dignosis (July 18th 2003) and are now 1:1 (May 2004). Such is life:)
