  1. Abuelo's In Plano Texas

I don't know about the Abuelos in Plano, but I am going to the one in Lewisville, TX tonight for a non-profit benefit and called up the manager between lunch and dinner (I don't like calling when restaurants are at their busiest). The manager informed me that he himself has food allergies (iodine and shellfish) and the entire staff is very aware of gluten intolerance and cross contamination. He even told me to ask my waiter for the gluten free menu that they have available. I don't think all Abuleos are this good since the gluten free menu is not listed on their website, so I was pleasantly suprised. He went in to saying that they make sure pans, tongs, and gloves are clean, because of the cross contamination risk. I would advise anyone to just call up Abuelos they wish to go to and ask to speak to the manager. Sometimes I feel that the restaurant's understanding of gluten intolerance and celiac disease is better than a restaurant just having a "gluten free selection" on their site or menu. I'll post later about my experience!!
  2. I got an email from Del Monte after inquiring about what the "food starch" source is in their creamed corn and they replied: January 18, 2008 Dear Stacey, Thank you for your e-mail about Del Monte Cream Style Corn. The modified food starch we use is made from corn. The list below includes all current Del Monte consumer products that, to the best of our knowledge, do not contain wheat, oats, rye or barley/malt ingredients. The list may change or may not be complete due to formula changes or new product introductions. It's always best to read the ingredient statement on the label for the most current information. Del Monte Gluten-Free Products - All Del Monte and S&W Canned/Jarred Fruits - All Del Monte Fruit Snack Cups (Metal and Plastic, includes Del Monte Fruit Chillers) - All Del Monte and S&W Canned Vegetables (excluding S&W Canned Dry Bean products which are now produced and distributed by Faribault Foods) - All Del Monte, Contadina, and S&W Tomatoes & Tomato Products (except Del Monte Spaghetti Sauce Flavored with Meat, and Contadina Tomato Paste with Italian Herbs) - Del Monte Harvest Selections Santa Fe Style Rice & Beans - Del Monte 100% Fruit Juices - StarKist Tuna (except Tuna Creations Herb & Garlic, Tuna Fillet Teriyaki, and the crackers in Lunch Kits) - College Inn Garden Vegetable Broth and College Inn Organic Beef Broth. I appreciate the opportunity to respond and hope this information is helpful. Mary, Del Monte Foods Consumer Affairs
  3. I add freshly ground cinnamon to the coffee grinds when grinding my coffee. It makes a wonderful flavored coffee! I honestly think pre flavored coffees are nasty, so it works for me
  4. Going To Texas Roadhouse For Dinner

I just went to the Texas Roadhouse in Denton, TX tonight and the manager, James did in fact inform me that they have done away with the gluten free menu b/c of the liability. I spoke with the manager and he told me the ingredients in some of their products. He said to order any steak without the spice/grill seasoning, and the side of vegetables with no seasoning and the mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes contain butter, heavy cream, salt and pepper. I ordered the sirloin steak with no seasoning, mashed potatoes and a side salad with no croutons and their homemade ranch dressing. He told me the dressings are homemade in the restaurants and that the ingredients in the ranch do not contain gluten, but as far as any other dressing, he'd have to go look it up. Overall, I had a very pleasent experience and have had no side effects. Basically, to sum up, James told me to stay away from all seafood, all fried food, bread (obviously) and just to ask whats in each individual menu item before ordering, expressing your concerns and that they are very willing to accomodate. The great thing about this place, is that most of the menu items are homemade which makes it easier to find out whats in them.
