  1. thanks for the info - very interesting
  2. yes, she is celiac. gluten-free since 2002. she is taking 250 mg. depakote once a day. she was just tested a month ago & her levels were fine. now another doctor did more blood tests & levels were high. i don't know if both liver tests were testing for same things.
  3. yes, she is celiac. misdiagnosed for about 8 years. gluten-free since 2002.
  4. My daughter, 19, has been sick since April. Her first symptoms were hot flashes, weight gain (now up to 50 lbs.), shortness of breath, not sleeping (have tried Ambien, Lunestra, Rozeram) even with the pills (currently waiting to get in sleep study). Additional symptoms now include: rapid pulse/heart rate (EKG normal) and chest pain. She's had many blood tests, which show low progesterone (took her off birth control pills, now hasn't gotten period in 2 months), high liver enzymes, low iron. Her body is not absorbing vitamins/minerals - very low in D, B12, folate, zinc, selenium. Currently taking these vitamins, plus probiotics & digestive enzymes to bring up levels. Has been tested for thyroid problems (blood tests normal), but still believe this is related to thyroid. She suffers from depression & chronic tension headaches & takes prozac and depakote. Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated. We're both running out of ideas and patience. Don't know what to do next.
  5. We went through the same thing last year at Penn St. A few things we did that made it easier: ask them if they have room in the dining hall to store some extra food - this way you can send more at one time & she won't have a problem with storing the stuff. Also, see if they would let you keep a toaster (maybe they would even purchase it for you) there. That way she could have some for breakfast (that seems to be the hardest meal to find things to eat). My daughter also got another refrigerator in the room - she switched to a single room - felt having the extra space for food was worth it. She ended up doing a lot of chinese take-out too.
  6. Need College Info

Thanks for the list - it was a big help!
  7. My daughter has been accepted at the following colleges: Shippensburg U., York, Rowan, Stockton, Penn State, Bloomsburg. Does anyone know any celiacs at these schools? They have been very helpful on the phone, but it is always better to directly talk to someone who has personal experience.
  8. Besides all the concerns that everyone else is listing, ask them why they can't have dedicated fryers for french fries. My daughter really misses being able to eat fries in most places.
  9. Mohegan Sun Casino

My daughter has eaten at Johnny Rockets a few times. They have a gluten free menu online. She's had the fries and grilled chicken with no problems. Just call & double check that they have a dedicated fryer at that location.
  10. Has anyone tried to make 'pigs in a blanket'? (little hotdogs with a roll wrapped around them). Do you think that mix for chebe bread would work? I haven't tried it, but just thinking. My daughter really misses them, good for snacking or a quick lunch). They'd also be good for appetizers at a party
  11. Ruby Tuesdays

I found out this weekend that the Ruby Tuesday's in Stroudsburg, PA has gluten free french fries every Saturday. They clean out the fryer & change the oil. My daughter had a great dinner, grilled shrimp & fries. They also have a good salad bar. I'm going to email them & see why they can't keep it like that all the time & also see if that's a chain-wide practice or just there.
  12. Cereal?

I happened to look at a box of Kix the other day and I think if you can tolerate oats, they're wheat free. My daughter had some with no problem - she eats matzo balls made from oats too. Check them out.
  13. Niagra Falls

  14. Niagra Falls

We're staying on the Canadian side. I went online, looks like a lot to choose from. What are your favorite places? Thanks for the info. Laurie.....
