    Hi! You may want to be sure you do not have hypothyroid. It is commonly associated with Celiac and can cause weight gain. I gained some weight prior to learning I have hypothyroid. Once diagnosed and regulated on Synthroid I had no trouble dropping the weight.
  4. It sounds like you have tried to provide all of them with the information they need to improve their health and they are making the choice to disregard it. What a shame for them, but you really can't do anything about it. This woman is who she is. It may save you some frustration if you can aviod the topic with her. She clearly is incapable of listening to others when she believes she "knows" something. You could continue to provide information to her husband and sons in a discreet way but it is still out of your hands whether they will do anything with it or not. I have found that people in my family are unwilling to even consider getting tested for this. Maybe they are afraid? I believe my Dad has it and I suspect my twin sister (fraternal) and older sister have it. They have never been rude and ugly acting like your Aunt sounds but they are really unwilling to even get the blood test! I know it is hard to have her disregard something this serious. However, you can't control other peoples reactions. You have done the best you can do by sharing the information. What they do with it is up to them.
  5. Well I am going to use the bread machine. I am going to do a couple of test loaves. Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty sure I'll know if I have a reaction. I guess my last reaction to gluten was so bad that I am getting much more careful. Thanks again!
  6. My Dad and Stepmom have offered to give me their bread machine. They have rarely used it and it is very clean. Would you guys use it?

  8. I can't find a substitute for Cream of Mushroom, Chicken, Celery, etc. soups to use in some of my favorite casserole and crock pot recipes. Has anyone found a gluten-free brand or sub? Cindy
  9. Bless your heart! I just wanted to respond and let you know someone is listening to you. I am feeling very frustrated too. I can tell you that I have read several articles from this site that indicate a relationship between autoimmune disorders and celiac. I too suffer from what I call freezing spells and unbearable coldness in my hands, feet and nose. I have hypothyroid and it is regulated. I had always assumed the cold intolerence was caused by that. Believe me I don't mean to minimize it by using the word intolerence it is more like unbearable. Good for you for sticking to the gluten free diet. I know you must feel discouraged. I have been reading this message board for several months and have noticed that it is not uncommon for people to experience ongoing symptoms after starting the diet. It seems there are so many factors such as learning there is Gluten where you least expect it, like a favorite drink, shampoo, etc. Also I have noticed tht other food intolerences seem to go along with this. I am trying to learn more now too but I have seen several people refer to Caseian (sp) intolerence. Also I have seen something called refractory celiac memtioned. celiac3270 tends to post some very helpful information and he seems to have continued to struggle with symptoms on the gluten-free diet. (Actually, all the posts have been very helpful but I have seen celiac3270 post consistently since I started checking in here.) Don't give up. You will find the answer and your sticking to the diet is a very significant accomplishment.
  10. Have any of you had problems with the severity and duration of a stomach/intestinal virus seeming to be much worse and a longer duration then what other people seem to experience? About two weeks ago I caught a virus with typical symptoms; low fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and followed by diarrhea. The problems with diarrhea lasted about 5 days until I gave in and took imodium as we were leaving for my inlaws for Thanksgiving. I did fine over Thanksgiving and had no problem avioding gluten. However, two nights ago when we came home I gave in to a craving and ate pizza with my husband. It was a very cheesy pizza with the regular wheat crust. About 3-4 hours later I was record sick. I have not been sick like this since I started to avoid gluten 5 months ago. And I have to admit I have done this pizza thing a few times. I did get a little trouble from it but nothing to this level. So here I am Monday morning looking for some reassurance and support becuase I am still feeling bad. I had to call in sick to work this am becuase I could not get out of the bathroom. I have always had problems with keeping the stomach/intestinal flu longer then I think I should. Is this common? Also, is it possible my reaction was so severe to the pizza because I had recently had the stomach/intestinal flu? I have to admit I have been living with a certain level of denial about my diet. I have not been totally gluten free. I think I have been fooling myself. When I had the blood test my doctor told me I had a positive result but that it was a "weak psoitive". I had not been eating much of anything when I had the test because I was sick so often I simply avoided all food to try to get through the work day. Could this have affected my results? My MD told me I did not have to avoid gluten entirely but to avoid it for the most part. Could this have been wrong? She is a GP and I have not seen anyone else. I never had a colonoscopy and she did not even advise it. Also, I feel terribly guilty about having to miss work today. Does anyone else ever feel this way? Sorry to be such a whiner. I just feel discouraged and I am confused about whether I have Celiac or just Gluten intolerence. Do you have to avoid all gluten either way? I did schedule an appointment with a homeopathic MD my friend saw for chronic gastritis. I don't know if I should go ahead with this without knowing what my diagnosis is. I did find the thread celiac3270 posted on the subject helpful.
  11. I have several friends who are vegatarian and they all advised I try beano. I have not traide it yet so I don't know if it works or not. You can but it at any pharmacy. Also recommended was zimethacone (sp?). It may be that you are still adjusting to eating this stuff. Please let your MD know if you continue having problems! Cindy

    Hi everyone! I am brand new and very happy to have found you. I was thankful for responses to my post about the biopsy. I have learned so much reading all of your messages. I am 35 yo and have suffered with this as long as I can remember. I have always felt very alone and misunderstood. It has been so nice to know I am not. I am a psychologist in NC. I have struggled with missing too much work due to the gastrointestinal symptoms. My current employer is wonderful and has been very good to me. However, I have not always been so lucky. I feel very fortunate to have learned what is wrong with me and how to get some relief! I have been gluten-free for about 2 weeks. I certainly feel better. For the first time in years I have been going to bed without a stomach ache! I am happily married but we do not have children. We have two dogs and two cats who we treat like children! I have had an IBS diagnosis since my teens. I have suffered with all the typical IBS symptoms with no response to meds. I was diagnosed as hypothyroid this year. I had the gluten intolerence blood work after a close firend read an article about it and pushed me to get tested. She had to push me because I had asked a previos MD to test me and she actually laughed at me! However, my current MD was very responsive and did the test for me. The blood work came back positive and well here I am. The timing was perfect for me. I am starting MBA classes in mid August. I do not think I could have taken this on while working full time if I had not seen some symptom relief on the gluten-free diet. Otherwise, I enjoy reading, I run 20-25 miles per week, I watch The Bold and The Beautiful on my lunch break, and I love animals! My husband is a carpenter and he plays lead guitar in a heavy metal band. It is so great to know you all! You all have had to deal with some tough symptoms, mistreatment, and misunderstanding yet have been real survivors. I look forward to keeping in touch. Cindy
  13. Hi Catfish! Thank you for the reply. You helped validate my thoughts and feelings about the biopsy. I do not want to add gluten back in my diet just to have an uncomfortable medical procedure. I was not even aware of that part of it! We do sound very similar. Especiallly regarding the biopsy issue! I hope you continue to feel better.
  14. Hi There! I am new to the world of gluten intolerence and to message boards. I am 35yo and have just had the gluten intolerence blood work. My results were psoitive for gluten intolerence and I have been gluten-free for two weeks. I feel so much better. I could go on and on about that but I'd be preaching to the choir! I am wondering if I really must have the biopsy? My PCP who did the blood work has not even mentioned it. She simply told me to avoid gluten. I have to say I have had symptoms for as long as I can remember. I have had an IBS diagnosis since I was a teen. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid this year. I bring that up because I was suprised to learn there is a relationship between thyroid idease and Celiac. Anyhow, I really don't want to have the biopsy. I had a colonoscopy 6 years ago and don't want to do anything like that agian unless I really, really have to. Any suggestions?
