I really did something stupid and bought frozen gluten free waffles while staying with mother in law. The toaster is not gluten free and I forgot the bags I use to toast them in. Is there any other way to fix frozen waffles without a toaster?
UPDATE!! Our Olive Garden got the different pasta, and it is vast improvement over what they had. Unfortunately, they have not had the time to print up a new gluten-free menu, but our server was VERY helpful.
We've had good luck at Olive Garden, but we live in a small market, and it's easy for the servers to get to know us. We usually go with a good friend who doesn't mind omitting croutons (even though both he and I can have them), so there is no confusion about the salad. The pasta is a bit dry, but we solve that by getting marinara sauce "for the breadsticks," then giving it to my celiac hubby to add to his pasta. We do have a Biaggi's here, and that is our favorite place to go for Italian.
Canyon Bakehouse is the best for us. Celiac Hubby can now eat a "regular" sandwich without it falling apart. Fortunately we can afford the price, and I order on-line. Shipping is a little steep, but again, it's worth it for us.
Trip to Germany was great! We stayed with daughter, son-in-law, and new grand-daughter, so eating out was not an issue. The commissary on base had a lot of gluten-free grocery options, and the German drug store we went to had tons of Dr. Shar products. There were some I had never seen before, especially in the variety of breads, cookies, and assorted sweets. We even found some gluten-free beer in a shopping mall in Bayeruth (sp?)
We flew non-stop from Chicago O'Hare to Munich and back on United. The gluten-free dinner on the flight out was very good according to hubby, but it went downhill from there. The "breakfast" was a rice cake and applesauce. The lunch and snack on the flight back were barely tolerable. They seem to think rice is the only carbohydrate acceptable for gluten-free diets.
I wish I had more information on eating out in Germany, but with a 2-week old baby, getting out much was not an option. We did make it to a street festival in Nuremburgh, and enjoyed brats and wine. Among all the food and souvenier tents, there was a gluten-free tent with about the best cookies hubby ever had!
Since they will be there 3 years, we plan on going back in about a year or so. Hopefully, we will be able to get out more.
So, I'd recommend bringing your own food on United Airlines - they tried, but came up a little short.
My Celiac hubby has a question. What if he doesn't eat everything he takes with him? Will there be any issues with left-over food when we land in Germany? We have ordered a gluten-free meal (and airline confirmed), but will be taking some food with us in case of the above-mentioned snafus. Thanks!
I'm a little late, but celiac hubby has tried the bun. Typical gluten-free bun that breaks apart, so he still has to eat the burger with a fork. Wish they could get Canyon Bakehouse buns; they are the only ones, at this point, that hold together!
Have never had a problem with Olive Garden. True their offerings are sparse. All of us order the salad with no croutons so there is no confusion on that. The pasta is OK enough to stand once in a while, according to celiac hubby.
However, if we want real, good Italian food, we go to Biaggi's, which has an amazing gluten-free menu!
Thanks for the good suggestions! We are flying to Germany non-stop from Chicago on United and have ordered the gluten-free meal for hubby. Still, we will have the suggested foods with us in case it looks inedible. The non-stop flights are a little pricier, but we thought it would be worth it to NOT have to deal with a stop-over at an airport terminal. Now, to calm my nerves. I've flown before, but never overseas!
Thanks for all the advice! Daughter has been scoping out stores as well, and we are probably going to ship some food over before our visit. I will definitely use the web sites because I hope we can do a lot of sight-seeing. Especially to Leipzig, because as an organist, I'm a huge Bach fan!
Not all McDonald's are loaded with teenagers. I've seen many with older employees. We get the Quarter Pounder with cheese, no bun and fries, and celiac hubby is fine with that. But again, if your son is very sensitive, I'd pack him a lunch, but allow him to get a milkshake.
And, if anyone gives you grief about bringing in food - four words - Americans With Disabilities Act.
Wow! I got a message on my work phone from someone who obviously didn't care...Basically Six Flags Fiesta has no gluten-free options, but we would be free to bring in snacks provided we checked in with customer relations. And, we could keep food in a cooler in the car. I don't think so! Sea World, on the other hand, seems to have some gluten-free options, and I'm sure we can find restaurants in San Antonio that will do. So, Sea World, the Alamo, and the Riverwalk will be on our itinerary. Six Flags - NOT! Just glad the call came in while I was gone from work, or the caller would have gotten an earful!
Still, would appreciate any feedback on any particularly good places in San Antonio, if you know of some.
