  1. Hi Mushroom, thanks for the 'heads up'. Australia is expanding its digital channels because of the upcoming HD TV change over, However except for ABC and SBS this is mostly very old repeats or new teenage trash pop shows. Since I dont use Pay TV maybe we will have to wait for a few celebrities to go celiac disease and get on TV about it before it becomes 'popular' !
  2. Hi ... being an ex engineer - this number crunch may help you. 60,000 people would be about .02% of the US population (based on 320 million). They say that 1 in 133 Americans are celiac, (even though I think it is more like 1% (Australia and UK)) If it is 1 in 133, then the total number or celiacs would be 2.4 Million people - most articles round it up to 3 million. If only 5% WERE diagnosed - then 5% of 2.4 million would be 120,000. I have read articles that suggest that the diagnosis rate may only be 2.5% which matches your original 60,000 figure. Amazingly Australia has nearly 20% diagnosed, but your media machine gives America a higher market growth rate. One thing you should realise though is that America is blessed with entreprenuers / capitalists that see Gluten Free as a very lucrative niche. America now has the highest gluten free online demand of any country! The reason that diagnosis levels are so low is access to cheap healthcare, people's awareness of the symptoms (often taking ten years to diagnose) and medical doctors understanding celiac disease and be willing to test for it. That said, gluten free online demand is booming in the USA. As 2009 was the highest growth year in five years. The best way to spread the word in your local community (IMHO) is to get your favourite eating places to extend their gluten-free options or you go elsewhere. ALSO while celiac diagnosis is very low, friends and family of celiacs multiply their number and power considerably. In Aust, while gene testing for DQ2 and DQ8 celiac genes gives you maybe 95% 'proof', biopsy is still the stongest method. If your give up gluten well before going for a biopsy, your test may be inconclusive. IN Australia, the celiac society will not accept you for membership unless your doctor writes this as a full diagnosis - hence some actual and practicing celiacs are not included in the stats.   3. Hi Kathy, Just a little addtion to the LA story. The Gluten Free Pages site in Australia reported info on the vaccine trial back in March 2009. I cant give you the specific URL as I hear that is forbidden for newbies ... but I would also like to add these cautions. The auto immune approach to a disease that is considered as a reaction to gluten is a very novel idea - however I myself was put on a two year (monthly) injection schedule for asthma where they injected doses of modified hay proteins into me to boost my immunity, and it virtually did nothing to improve my condition. I have heard that this same poor result occurs for many people. I would also caution any process that injects man made proteins or anti bodies into us - isnt that why many people reject gene modified food - for unknown long term effects? These may or may not work, but I see the best long term solution being the natural solution where we go back to growing ancient grains that do not have the massive densities of gluten that we have allowed farmers to breed into modern gluten grains. Just a thought.
  4. Hi Brittany, I am probably old school but I would go more with a theme like 'war of the worlds'. In that gluten is really like a foreign invader to our bodies like an alien from mars. The havoc they cause on a celiacs body makes them appear many times larger than they really are. Their large machine legs can cover great distances in our bodies and their lasers are very affective against the villi in our 'guts'. the whole celiac thing is really our bodies waging a war against the invaders with gluten free being the only hero at the moment. Not sure how you would visualise the hero. Does that work at all for you?
  5. Hi All, I have just joined this forum and was reading the article posted about 'Chef Masters' TV program. I am writing this from Australia and am interested that your TV program mentioned gluten free at all. Just like the US craze, Australia has really taken to cooking shows and now 'Celebrity Chef' cooking competitions on the box. I am curious though about how many times gluten free is generally mentioned in the press there. I have done articles on the US market for the local Gluten Free Pages site and know that you are now the global market leader, but that doesnt always translate to prime time gluten free coverage. IN Oz for instance, while we have a strong gluten-free market, Gluten free is hardly metioned on TV or radio. Even though we have one of the highest celiac diagnosis rates in the world, we find that the rare times gluten-free is mentioned it is done so in a negative mocking manner - adding to the sceptism that the disease is a fake! I long for the day when gluten free goes mainstream and loses its stigma. Perhaps it will have to start off on community cable first, or get a backing from the Prime Minister before it can become legitimate.
