I've had too many experience like the ones listed to even begin. Just alittle tip for everyone... I've learned to just tell the waiter/waitress that I am allergic to flour. They will look at you with the same weird expression but it alleviates them from a lot of the thinking they can't seem to handle. On the reverse side, I once had a waitress who realized I had celiac disease and even went so far to find out if the soy milk they used to make my mashed potatoes had barley in it without me even asking. She didn't find out until after she serves me the mashed potatoes but rushed over right away and gave me half off my meal (again, without me even asking). I wish all waitresses could be like that!

    3. erica added a post in a topic Introductions

Hi everyone, I am 26 living in NYC with my wonderfully supportive husband. I was diagnosed w/celiac disease a little over a year ago thru blood tests. I have had symptoms for as long as I could remember and never understood why I was always sick. I had horrible migraines, bone pain in my legs, tingling in my toes, was always exhausted and taking naps, and was always getting sick. After years of going to Drs, having cat scans, etc... my mother-in-law suggested I stop eating wheat for a while to see if it had any effect. I felt better immediately and started doing a little of my own research when I stumbled upon Celiac Disease on the internet. I had to beg my primary to test me and sure enough, the test results came back positive. Since then, I have switched Drs and now see a celiac specialist. The best part of my diagnosis is that my mother-in-law is a Pediactric Hematologist- which means that she treats children with blood diseases. Before I was dianosed with Celiac, she wasn't aware of the disease and has several unsolved cases of children with severe anemia. Ever since my diagnosis, she has added a celiac disease test to these kid's test and has diagnosed at least 4 children!

When I am not avoiding gluten, I spend most of my time working (in fashion industry), working out (yoga, ballet, running & weight training), reading, listening to classic rock and hanging in Central Park with my husband. Oh yeah, and I spend a lot of time on this website hearing from all of you- it makes me feel normal and is a great source of ideas and support. So thanks everyone!

    4. erica added a post in a topic How Long To Eat Gluten Before Biopsy?

Hi, I was told to go back on gluten for a preiod of three months by Dr. Green of the Celiac Disease Center in NYC. It's been 2 months and I feel horrible but I have been told that even if I have started feeling symptoms, it may still not be enough time to see anything via endoscopy. 3 months is a safe bet

Hi, I actually have this problem when I am not off gluten. I had it for years before I knew I had celiac disease and it stopped when I went off gluten. I am now back on gluten for a short period to have an endoscopy and within 2 weeks of eating it again, my leg pains came back.

    6. erica added a post in a topic "the Itch I Don't Want To Talk About" Anal Itching

I am so relieved to know I am not the only one. I am on my computer looking for answers at 2 am b/c I can't stand the itching anymore. I have tried warms baths, tucks pads, every anti itch cream on the market and suppositories. At first, they worked for a few hours at a time. Now they work for about 5 minutes before the itching comes back. I am on my last nerve.... I think mine started when my Dr. put me back on gluten b/c my test results came back inconclusive. He wants me to eat it for 3 months so I can then hae an endoscopy. I am at month 2 and all my old symptoms are back. But this butt itch is a new symptom and it keeps me up at night!

You might want to call the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia Presbyterian in NYC- they might be able to recommend a ped who is familiar with celiac disease.

    8. erica added a post in a topic Looking For Dr. In Nyc Area

Dr. Peter Green is the best Celiac Dr in NYC. He is the Director of the Celiac Disease Center At Columbia uptown. The # is 212-305-5590. I would just be sure that he takes your insurance first b/c he is very expensive otherwise.

    9. erica added a post in a topic How Many Of Your Gi Doctors Were Willing?

Get a new Dr- if your current one is so horrible, why are you sticking around? I too had to beg my Dr for the bloodwork. I took the test on June 10 2003 and called the office for 2 weeks straight to find out the results. They did not call me back until July 3rd. When I asked them to fax me a copy of my bloodwork, it indicated that they recevied the results back on June 13. They waited 3 weeks just to call and give me my results. So, I changed Dr's and I am so much happier now.

    10. erica added a post in a topic Kosher And Gf

Sara, you have a gluten-free kosher friend! I actually made really delicious hamentaschen last night. I found a basic recipe online and just substituted the regular flour with Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Gluten Free Flour. I had to add about an extra 1/2 cup of the flour so that it wasn't so sticky but it worked really well. By the way, don't know if you live near a Whole Foods but they sell kosher for pesach gluten free matza around pesach time.
I also plan on trying a bunch of gluten free challah recipes when I get a chance, probably not until after pesach. I'll let you know how they turn out!

    11. erica added a post in a topic Wrigley's Big Red Gum

According to my nutritionist (the nutritionist at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University), all Wrigley gum is Gluten Free. Big Red as always made my tongue numb- it's part of the cinammon flavor. It shouldn't have anything to do with celiac disease.

too funny... I had my first appt with a nutritionist at the Celiac Disease Center in NYC. She started rambling off a bunch of normal candies that are definitely gluten free. I immediately thought of this post!

I agree.. they never know if you bring food in. I always bring my own bag of microwave popcorn and sometimes even some grapes or other finger fruits. And besides, movie theater popcorn is highway robbery!

Tarnalberry, You are correct. To deduct medical expenses, they must be a certain percentage of your total income. I am not sure exactly how much but an accountant would know.
