About Me

Recent updates, May 2015

moved to Bradenton, Florida.

November 2010:

Tested positive for the HLA DQ2 gene, making my Celiac diagnosis almost certain.

IgA levels are still high despite following a strict gluten free diet for the last 6 months. Unknown whether I am continuing to consume gluten and/or have other food intolerances.

I got diagnosed with Celiac Disease on May 4, 2010. As an avid baker, this came as a particularly unpleasant surprise. For years I've been suffering from fatigue, poor sleep, restless legs, facial congestion (pollen allergies), acne, acid reflux and some weight loss (although not an alarming amount, and I like my weight now, ha ha).

I don't really have the stomach problems that many associate with Celiac, although IBS runs in my family and I'm suspect that some of my other family members may have it.

I currently live in Champaign, Illinois (about 2 hours south of Chicago) and work at an alterations store. As I'm relatively new to celiac disease, I'm trying to gather more information, do more research about my new diet and meet others who have this condition. I'm especially interested in meeting people who live nearby Champaign. Other than the internet, I feel quite alone right now with this condition and feel somewhat overwhelmed and alienated. I hope to meet new people, gather more information, get new recipes and more!

  1. I got retested in February 2012 at the Chicago Celiac Center and my numbers are finally going down. I also had a repeat endoscopy back in November 2011 which came out excellent. I'm happy to say that I'm finally making some progress and have been feeling better, too.

  2. I read about your numbers still being high. This analysis of celiac research done by the FDA might be of interest to you.

  3. Latest results Oct 2011 from the Chicago Celiac Center (worse than in April!):

TgG IgA 53 (20 or less is normal)

Deam gliadin IgA Ab 83 (20 or less is normal)

Have to get a repeat endoscopy on Nov 17 in the Chicago Celiac Center to see why I'm not responding to the gluten-free diet and if there are other issues.

  4. these last few months have been strange for me. My periods are almost always very regular but a couple of months ago, I got one and kept bleeding for well over 2 weeks. I wasn't bleeding very hard but it went on and on. My gyn seemed to think that it was due to not ovulating. Then my last period came early but other than that, there was no problem. This period...
  5. thanks, everyone, for all of your suggestions. I'll be going to Asheville and Sylva, NC and northern Georgia in less than a week. Looks like there are slim pickings in that area except for Asheville, which is supposed to be great.
  6. Ok, thanks for letting me know. I won't eat any in the future until they are more clear about their policies. I can't stand companies who are so vague and unhelpful!
  7. does anyone know if the small size regular ones are safe? I seem to be very sensitive to CC, but don't have any instant reaction (it just seems to wear down my immune system over time). Really conflicted as to whether I should eat it or not...
  8. No, I don't use their microwave popcorn. I'm just talking about their plain corn kernels. So there is no risk with cross contamination and their plain corn kernels?
  9. I'm aware that Orville popcorn is gluten free in itself, but is it produced in a gluten free facility? I have problems with cross contamination.
  10. I'm no longer so new. And I feel welcome in this community!

  11. I am taking Gabapentin (the generic brand of Neurontin) and just had a pharmacist check to see if there was gluten in this medication. She called back saying that there was "cornstarch gluten" in it. I asked her what that was and she said she had never heard that phrase before. Needless to say, she doesn't know whether it's a problem for me to take or not...
  12. Unlike you all, I do not know when I'm glutened. I seem to have no distinct symptoms that I can trace. I have atypical celiac disease, the kind without the typical GI symptoms, but rather other types of problems. I think it must be a really delayed reaction. And I have no idea how delayed. I just get worse gradually, sometimes over a period of months. My...
  13. Recent results from the University of Chicago Celiac Center (unfortunately, not good):

TgG IgA 44 (20 or less is normal)

glaiden gluten protein 79 (20 or less is normal)

they just told me to go on a stricter diet...

  14. is new. Please welcome me into the community!
