  1. I have celiac disease (more specifically dermatitis herpitiformus) and have known about it for about a year, though I didn't receive my official diagnosis until about a month ago. I've been wondering if my daughter has or will have celiac disease and what to look for in her. I had/have somewhat obscure symptoms (joint pain, rash, infertility/miscarriage). She complains of her stomach hurting fairly frequently. She also has pale stools essentially all the time. (She is 4.5 and has been fully potty-trained for a couple of years, so I don't always see the result). She doesn't have any growth issues at this point. I don't want to be paranoid, but I also don't want to turn a blind eye to something. If it makes any difference at all, she also has a severe peanut allergy.
  2. Celiac And Genetics

    I know that celiac disease is genetic, but I'm wondering what the statistics are for passing it on to your children. My daughter is 4.5 and, as far as I can tell, is not exhibiting symptoms at this point. Also, my symptoms did not present themselves until my early 20's. Does that have any bearing on the age my daughter may come into it? Thanks!

  4. Infertility?

    I've been battling secondary infertility for over two years now. I've only know that I have celiac disease for about a year. I have taken fertility treatments and had a miscarriage. My 4.5 year old daughter's placenta stopped working at the end of my pregnancy with her. I was induced for not having any amniotic fluid (didn't leak, just stopped making it). I blame celiac disease on both that and my miscarriage. It is actually a little bit empowering to have an explanation, whereas before, everything was "unexplained." My advice to you is to stay gluten-free and to chart your cycles. If your cycles are normal, there is no need to worry. If they are off, you aren't ovulating, they are too long, etc., you will have the information handy to show your doctor. Also, charting can help you get pregnant faster, since you can pinpoint ovulation. Good luck!
  5. Last August, I began to suspect that I have celiac disease. I had a terrible rash, achy joints, and unexplainable infertility/miscarriage. After doing a lot of research, it seemed like a clear explanation for everything I was experiencing. However, my doctor was reluctant to confirm my suspicions when my blood test came back negative. He went on to test me for RA and hepatitis (both were also negative, obviously). I elected to go gluten-free on my own and started feeling better almost immediately. I had a few accidental (and some not-so accidental) glutenings and felt bad again, so there was no question in my mind. Also, my cycles returned to normal after at least four years of being all over the place. Just a few days ago, I had another accidental glutening. I woke the next morning with my DH rash, so I decided to call the doctor and ask if he wanted to do a skin biopsy. He got me in that same afternoon to discuss options. He said he could do more specific blood tests and/or a biopsy, but that it would all be expensive. He also said that with the consistency of my symptoms (or lack thereof), he is now convinced that I have celiac disease. He didn't feel any further testing was necessary, because it wouldn't change the treatment. So anyway, after nearly a year of feeling like my doctor didn't take me seriously, I now feel victorious.
  6. How Did Your Dh Start?

    My DH was misdiagnosed as eczema for years. I had an itchy rash on both shins for years. When I finally figured out what the heck was wrong with me, I had a full-blown, insanity0inducing rash on the backs of my thighs. That went on for several months until I stopped eating gluten. A few days ago, I accidentally ate gluten and woke the next morning with my telltale DH. I took a picture of it in case my doctor wanted to see it. This is what it looked like first thing in the morning. The night before, there was no rash.

    Yes, my doctor and I agree that gluten probably caused my miscarriage. It happened before I was diagnosed and I was eating gluten like crazy. There was no other explanation for it.
  8. Gluten Ruined My Cycle

    After 2.5 years of trying for baby #2 and one miscarriage later, my cycles seemed to be returning to a somewhat normal and functioning state. I have been gluten-free since August. Before that, I had to use fertility meds to ovulate. My last cycle was beautiful--I even ovulated on my own. When my period showed up, I felt sorry for myself for STILL not getting pregnant and gave into a major gluten craving. As a result, my current cycle is a complete mess. There are absolutely no signs of ovulation. Unfortunately, this means that this cycle will probably go on for a long time. I hate that, because who knows how long it will before I can start over and try again. ::pout:: Lesson learned.

  10. Do you notice that a certain gluten-free flour or common ingredient has a weird aftertaste? I notice it a lot in Bob's Red Mill cookie and bread mixes. I baked a loaf of bread mix that had so much potential. It had a great texture and looked beautiful...but it had that dreadful aftertaste. Do you know what I'm talking about?
  11. My husband bought some meat marinade that says it is gluten-free. However, the first ingredient is soy sauce. It doesn't specifically contain wheat, but it does contain caramel color. Would you steer clear of it, even though it states that it is gluten-free?
  12. Celiac And Fertility?

    After two years of inexplicable secondary infertility and one miscarriage, my OB and I are certain that gluten intolerance has been the cause of my problems. He said that Celiac Disease can certainly lead to both issues.
  13. Severe Reaction?

    Last week, I accidentally ate gluten--and it must have been quite a bit. Less than a half hour later, I started feeling terrible. My joints hurt, I was nauseated, I had a massive headache, and felt like I could pass out. Thankfully, it passed about two hours later when I ate and drank some more non-gluten items. I've been gluten-free since early August and have done a fairly decent job of avoiding gluten, so this was the first time I felt so ill. Is this a common reaction?

    I have been battling secondary infertility for two years in December. A year ago, we had a miscarriage and have not had a pregnancy since. I've been on Clomid many times (with breaks along the way). Everything appears to be working correctly, but I don't get pregnant. There was also no explanation for my miscarriage. Someone posted an article on here a while back about gluten causing miscarriages in those with Celiac Disease. It said something to the effect that the antibodies that are formed when we (gluten-intolerant folks) eat gluten attack the placenta and destroy it. When I read that, it all made so much sense to me. We were able to conceive our four-year old daughter very easily and I had a fairly easy pregnancy. However, at my 40-week appointment, I was only measuring at 27-weeks. My doctor sent me over for a sonogram and it was found that my daughter did not have any amniotic fluid, so I was induced immediately. They examined the placenta after my daughter was born and it was found to not be functioning. I've read that adult-onset celiac disease requires some kind of physically or emotionally taxing event. Pregnancy certainly is hard on the body, so I suspect that my pregnancy with my daughter triggered my celiac disease. I've only known about this since August, though, so I may still have a while before I'm able to get pregnant. I hope not, though!
