  1. Earlier in the thread, someone mentioned a non-standard practice of dumping the ice cream from bad cones into a bowl in the fridge and straining out the cone pieces before putting it back in the soft-serve machine. I could have been clearer, but I've got fuzzy gluten brain and it made sense at the time.
  2. Glutino makes ritz clones. Expensive but tasty. I also like the crunchmaster crackers.
  3. I occasionally get hot fudge sundaes at DQ and I have to reluctantly admit that they are making me sick. I'm not full-on glutened but I do get anxiety issues after eating there. DQ is a special treat and I make 95% of the rest of my food from scratch, so I know that the sundae is causing the problem. I'm wondering if my local DQ does the straining thing.
  4. That's great that they are paying attention to the CC risks. When they were testing the menu in my area I was told that they had no consideration for CC, used the same pans, all that. It's great to have another option. Thanks for the update.
  5. There is a wheat-free bakery/restaurant in Evanston, near Northwestern, called Rose's. Maybe that would be an option when you're there? It's not fancy, but the food is good.
  6. No, they won't be the way you remember, but I promise you, after a while you'll forget. You really will. I've been gluten free for ten months and I really enjoy the baked goods I make. The things I used to eat are slipping away. We humans have a way of adapting to the situation in front of us! And, I'll tell you -- Kinnikinnick donuts taste like regular gluten-y ones. I don't know how they do it, but they do. I'm sure part of this is just fear of changing to the new diet. I felt that way, too. But you can do it! I felt so much better after just a couple of days that I have never considered going back.
  7. Remember, too, that you've only been off gluten for three weeks. It's possible that you were just having a bad healing day. Feel better!
  8. Ugh. Even if I believed them about being gluten free, I wouldn't buy their stuff after that nasty email. There is no need for condescension when someone is merely trying to be sure that what they put in their body is safe.
  9. Would you let your daughter stay with her grandmother if she only got a little rat poison every time she visited? You are the one in charge now. You have the power in this situation. As someone said above, you have the obligation to keep your daughter from getting sick as best you can. If your mother-in-law wants to see her grandchild, she can stop showing her a$$. I sympathize with you. I don't have children, but I have a MIL who has admitted to putting chicken stock in her vegetarian son's food. Once I heard that, I knew that I could never eat another bite of food she prepared. It's one thing to make a CC mistake, another completely to knowingly contaminate someone's food. Take your power back! You need to wake up that Mama Bear instinct I know you have, and who cares if your MIL gets mad? It's kind of refreshing to give up caring what people think when they're actively trying to harm your precious daughter.
  10. Hmm. I wonder if you're sensitive to alliums -- the ground onion and the Fox mix are chock full of them.
  11. I use Penzey's for everything and have never reacted. Which ones are you having trouble with? If you have a problem with peppers, that might be it. A lot of their blends have dried peppers (versus peppercorns.)
  12. :lol: The garage door was one of my OCD focus points. A few years ago I even made my poor sainted husband call the local police and have them drive by because I was so certain that I had forgotten to close it after we'd both left for work. I'd get halfway to work (when I could work) and be absolutely convinced that I'd left it open or that maybe it had somehow opened after it closed all the way, no matter that that's not even how garage doors work! But I am happy to say that now I make sure the garage door is closed when I leave and never give it a second thought.
  13. I had a generalized anxiety since I was a teenager, really debilitating stuff. Been on and off the medication and therapy merry-go-round for years. After I went gluten free, I had a few really bad panic attacks, worse than I had ever had. I almost went to the hospital. Since then, though, my anxiety has just disappeared completely. That says to me that even though I might not have had the stomach symptoms until I was in my 30s, I have been reacting to gluten for a very long time.
  14. I am a big fan of the San-J tamari. We buy several bottles at a time because we go through it so quickly. I did not like La Choy. The taste was just not good to me. They also have dipping sauces that are pretty good. I found the best price on it at Whole Foods, surprisingly. I need to see if I can buy it in bulk. Also, make sure you are buying the wheat-free tamari! I would avoid oatmeal and when you do bring it back in, only use gluten free oats. Because of the way oats are grown and shipped, using the same fields and equipment as wheat, they're completely contaminated unless specially grown.
  15. Thank you for pointing this out. I haven't noticed any problems with corn or rice (my main grains), but I do get really sick when I eat tomatoes and potatoes. But if I don't get better I know what to try next.
