With just a little bit of guidance (focusing on the perishables departments: Seafood, produce, dairy, meat, etc.) I think more and more Celiacs would find that a gluten free diet is just as economical as any other diet. Their favorite stores have thousands of gluten free items that have been inherently gluten free for thousands of years.
I would like to see the weekly diet log of those who ate gluten free, didn't lose weight, and their respective exercise activity. Unfortunately, I think it's relatively safe to assume that their food diaries would have a number of gluten free items that MOST definitely will not lead to weight loss: gluten-free Cookies, gluten-free Cakes, gluten-free Brownies, gluten-free Cheesecakes, etc. In fact, these are generally empty calories, full of carbohydrates and sugar.
I would recommend that if the participant in the study were eating the aforementioned "processed items" (regardless of exercise or not) that they replace them with foods that have been gluten free for thousands of years.
With the exception of your honey at breakfast, I'm not seeing any forms of all natural sugars. If you snack just a few times on the following it will elevate your blood sugar throughout the day and you won't have those "lows" and doldrums:
- Apple with almond butter
- Mango chunks (buy them frozen and let thaw)
- Smoothies with berries (strawberry, blackberry, blueberries)
- Dried fruits
Give that a try with your small snacks (in between meals). Remember, you want to stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day... it will keep you from feeling fatigued.
Less processed is, indeed, the best way to lose weight. If you start shopping the golden horseshoe (the parameter of the store) you'll most likely succeed. Extra visits to produce, seafood, lean meats, low fat dairy, and you're on your way to shedding pounds.
Make sure you read the ingredient statements on EVERYTHING that you buy. If you can't pronounce an ingredient or have no idea what it is, put it back on the shelf.

GOOD, GOOD point! I used to be the Director of Marketing at one of the largest organic vegetarian companies in the United States. We had dozens of consumers just like you who ate our wholesome meat-free & organic items. Yet, they gained weight.
Get tested for both, but also have them run a full blood analysis on you.
Smart way to look at it. And, I know we learned this very early in school... but the more fresh produce the better. I know you're going to think that I'm fabricating this, but veggies and fruit taste better after I was diagnosed. I eat it throughout the day.
I had my first physical therapy session in my life this morning. My therapist was remarkable and her mother-in-law was a Celiac as well. The stories that she told of other Celiacs making a visit right after a gluten encounter! Just when I thought I saw the last of the side effects related to gluten, another issue rears its ugly head.
If you have the same issue, you can most likely related it back to being glutened.
UPDATE: Thank goodness for my health insurance, as I have already been referred to a physical therapist at 9a.m. tomorrow. I told her about my "theory" and she substantiated it... even elaborated about how we Celiacs get so much more inflamed when we are glutened.
Just one more thing we Celiacs have to look forward to when we get glutened.
