Thanks for the reply foam. Not exactly what I wanted to hear ( ) but I definitely appreciate and will consider all advice. The problem now is that I don't even like the look of meat. It makes me gag. I can't imagine having to go back on my principles especially when to do so means that I'm going to have to force myself to eat something that repulses me. Ahhhh!!!!
Still hoping there will be a knight in shining armour who may reply to my post saying they were successful at reintroducing dairy!

I guess it's hard to say. I worried right away "maybe I've been glutened!!" but I also didn't want to jump to conclusions. The good news is that I'm feeling better today. I just wondered if those were some signs I could look out for in the future. Has anyone ever done anything possibly stupid like take a bit of regular cake or something just to see what your reaction would be?? Or is that just crazy talk?
I don't have much to add other than to echo what everyone else has said on here. I am in the same type of boat as you. Gluten-free vegetarian who just had a food intolerance test reveal that I now need to try going yeast-free, oat-free, dairy-free, peanut-free....and the list goes on. I try not to let it get me too down. I go back and forth between allowing myself to have a moment of "this sucks" and then turning around and saying "but in the grand scheme of things this aint that bad". I agree with all the recommendations on here - it's not about eliminating as much as replacing. I can't have peanuts, but I can have almonds! Etc. And the idea of a splurge, or highlight is a good idea too. I try to focus on the things I can have. Like when I find something good that is actually "everything-free" I really celebrate it. I'm hoping that'll I'll be able to reintroduce some foods back into my diet in a couple of months, so I've used that to cope mentally (thinking some things *may* be temporary).
So in 2010 I became a vegetarian by choice. I should state up front that I have no intentions of going back on this.
In January 2012 I went gluten-free after being diagnosed with Celiac disease. So I was a gluten-free vegetarian....okay...it was tough but I managed.
After having tummy troubles for the past 2 months, my doctor sent me to have a food intolerance test (IgG). It showed that I had an elevated response to 13 foods, and I'm borderline with 6 others. The elevated results were for:
-yeast (baker's and brewer's)
and various categories of wheat.
I was flagged as borderline for:
I could go on and on but I'll spare you. So now I'm a dairy-free, yeast-free, oat-free, peanut-free, gluten-free vegetarian. This seems like an uphill battle. I'm going to eliminate all of the elevated foods for 2 months and then try slowly reintroducing. I guess my question is - how successful has everyone been when reintroducing foods from these kinds of tests? As a vegetarian - I really relied on dairy/oats/etc for protein... I <3 cheese!!!!! Please tell me that people out there have been successful!?!?
I've been diagnosed with celiac disease and have been gluten-free for a year now. Last night I went to my Mom's house for dinner (as I do on a regular basis). She normally makes "regular" recipes for everyone, and then my own special gluten-free version for me (e.g. scalloped potatoes with regular flour for everyone else, and a special pot made for me that is gluten-free). Everything I ate last night was TECHNICALLY gluten-free by ingredients. However about 10-15 minutes after I ate I started to feel really sick. I got a bad headache, I was so nauseous and dizzy and just felt awful. I ended up coming home and going straight to bed. I couldn't even see straight. Today I woke up and feel like I'm hung over (even though I don't drink) and am weak and irritable. I've never had noticable digestive symptoms or otherwise before. Even before I went gluten-free, the only symptoms I had were from malnutrition/malabsorption of my food. I wouldn't feel sick after eating a piece of bread, for instance. So this is all new to me. Could this possibly be a reaction to gluten?? Or am I just paranoid?? Also, does this make sense that I would react like this to a, probably, minor cross-contamination when I never reacted to eating full blown wheat/etc before?
I could look into taking magnesium, calcium and zinc. I don't take any of them right now.
I don't know if I have any other autoimmune diseases. My doctor says my CBC is normal, as is my thyroid. If I had another automimmune disease would it affect my CBC score? (Although I guess my celiac disease didn't...). But I wouldn't even know where to begin to determine that.
Oh my gosh mushroom you sound like me. If I'm on one thing it gives me something else and so on so I'm constantly fighting something. My doctor told me that I should just accept that I'm going to have them the rest of my life because its hormonal but I just can't accept that.
I take vitamin D every day. It's a C + D combined. I take 500 IU and have taken it for a few years now. I also have to take B12 and iron because my body stopped absorbing it. (I didn't have the gastro symptoms most celiacs have. We found out about my diagnosis after my iron dropped to 16 and after 3 months of supplements it had dropped to 9.)
I'm hoping someone can maybe shed some light on this for me as my doctor seems completely perplexed...and I'm waaaay passed frustrated.
I've had chronic infections for almost 3 years. At first I thought they were yeast infections but then my doctor told me they were more like bacterial/group b strep. She thought it was due to hormones so she took me off the contraceptive pill and I had an IUD inserted. However, much to my dismay, the infections continued. I went on 10 courses of antibiotics in a year and a half. That in addition to multiple courses of Diflucan because the antibiotics would give me yeast infections. I'm scared about taking too much antibiotics, so I started trying home remedies (including taking yogurt w live bacterial cultures, and inserting vitamin c directly in me to try and restore balance). I was diagnosed with celiac disease in December and wondered if the infections were from a compromised immune system due to the disease. I've been gluten free for 2 1/2 months and just got another infection. It's been a week and a half and it's still hanging on. Once again I refuse to go to my dr because I'm afraid her only answer will be antibiotics. And...okay, I'm about to go TMI on ya'll...but it's not just vaginal. It ends up giving me massive bloating and back pain and even my "back door" ends up burning. No types of gas relievers help my stomach during this time, and I'm convinced that it's related to the infection.
Does anyone have any idea of what this could be?? I'm desperate!!!
Just an update to say that I had no trouble bringing food through the airport. I was worried because I had an apple and even a burrito (packaged) as well as mini packs of pb and prepackaged cheese. Anyway, I sailed through with no problem. The US security agent just said that I wouldn't have been allowed to bring a citrus fruit over (e.g. oranges, grapefruit, etc). I also had almonds and some junk food too
(b.) I can't tell you how much, as a newbie, this thread has been so inspiring and uplifting. Sound minds and positivity. I just can't thank you all enough. I'm still in the "overwhelmed" stage so reading this post brought be back.
I would absolutely love to start running again. Nothing makes me feel the same way as my nice runner's high I used to get post-run. Unfortunately I developed PFS (runner's knee) so I had to stop running, and then my celiac syptoms (this is pre DX) started to flare up. I was so fatigued all of the time I couldn't even imagine putting on my shoes. I do yoga and I love it to death. But I need to supplement with cardio. Otherwise I feel sluggish. My physiotherapist said I'll never be able to run on a treadmill again which is devastating to me. He said I either have to run outside on a trail, or be indoors on an elliptical or stationary bike. But I want my treadmill!!!
I'm thinking about starting to get back into it. But I'm wondering if I should be worried about it being "too soon". I've only been gluten-free for 28 days and I feel like I have a bit of energy back, but I tried some circuit training and my heart palpitations are still pretty bad. But I don't want to get into a downward spiral - not workout due to heart palps, cardio endurance suffers which makes heart more prone to palps (?), then have palps when working out so stop...etc...etc...
So there's potential that I could have hair (I'm at 1/4 of the hair I used to have), a flat belly, and a butt!!! Best news ever!!!! I'm forever doing squats and feel like nothing's changed. Maybe being gluten-free will help with my muscle tone too!
I'm in the same boat as you. I didn't have many GI symptoms, other than the big C all of the time but the worst was that my stomach would get so distended I thought it was going to blow up and I had terrible back pain from the pressure on my other organs. I actually got stretch marks from it happening on and off for years. Anyway, I'm 3 weeks gluten-free and I think I've noticed a slight difference. But I was hoping for a miracle recovery and I've realized I have to be more realistic and patient. I think that the other poster has a good suggestion - it could very well be from another food. Elminiation diet of the common offenders could help. For me, I'm just going to give it more time. As a gluten-free vegetarian, I find eating can be challenging so it's not the right time for me to try the elimination diet.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. Sorry it's taken me a while to get back here! The airports I'll be in are Chicago and Dallas. But my layovers are very short so I don't expect to have any time to eat in the airport restaurants. So I'm hoping to bring enough food with me so I don't have to worry about it. I don't think I'll do the "Go Picnic" because I'm a vegetarian and most of their meals have meat. Thanks for the tip though.
So I think I'll try...mini packs of peanut butter, apple, gluten-free crackers, almonds, maybe even some oatmeal ("Only Oats" of course) that I could heat up with some hot water. Maybe some kale chips and dried or deydrated fruit. (Oh ya, and maybe some chocolate too.... )
