  1. Club Dinner, Small Buffet - To Go Or Not To Go?

    Thank you. I didn't see much of anything on the restaurant's regular menu that was gluten/dairy free except for a salad, but it's worth asking. Otherwise, I would probably save my money. Thanks for the feedback!
  2. Hi there, One of my running clubs is having a Member Appreciation dinner. It's a sit-down affair w/about four buffet items to choose from. The only thing on the list that I can eat is "vegetable crudites." Everything else involves pasta or bread. It costs money to go, and I'm on sort of a tight budget right now, so it seems like a waste to spend the money and not eat, but it would be nice to visit with folks too. But I would feel awkward sitting there with my carrot sticks while everyone else is digging into a full meal. So I need to decide -- to go or not to go? Anyone been in a similar situation? Any feedback would be most helpful. Thank you!

    Thank you both! Tuxedocat, I really like the easy "multiple food sensitivities" statement for certain social gatherings. I just have to remember to be as meticulous when I'm around other people as when I'm on my own. And remember how cruddy I feel if I slip up. Never give up and never give in for sure - thank you RL! I'm an athlete; I should *know* this! Just as they say, "think before you speak," I s'pose we should also "think before we eat!" Wishing good health to both of you! - Heather

    Hi Wise Forum Folks, I was diagnosed with gluten sensitivity about a week before Thanksgiving. I've been doing really well in following a strict gluten free/dairy free diet and overall have been feeling SO much better! I'm learning how to cook new things and got through a birthday without feeling too deprived, thanks to yummy Mariposa Bakery only a couple miles from my apt. But over the past month or so I've slipped up. Went out to eat on a date and was too embarrassed to quiz the server about my black bean salad. Went into Whole Foods and automatically popped a Belgian chocolate candy sample into my mouth without thinking that it could have something cake-like inside (it did). Bought a carton of soy milk on a trip and didn't read the label, only to discover the hard way that it contained gluten. All of these slip-ups have left me feeling ill, and all could have been avoided if I would have just stopped to think. Has anyone else had a slip-up phase? I feel like I've been so attentive for so long, and lately I just got lazy. And pay for it each time I screw up. Just wondering if this is typical and if it is, how have folks gotten themselves back on the bandwagon. Thanks in advance.... PS, another dumb mistake yesterday. At a family member's house...she was so nice and found a gluten-free baguette, made a salad for us, but added breaded chicken. I ate a bite or two thinking (or not thinking) 'amazing she found gluten free breaded chicken strips,' then realized that no, I probably shouldn't assume such things, and I shouldn't have. She said, 'Oh you can just pick that stuff off, can't you?' I shouldn't have eaten any of the salad, but I felt guilty that she went to so much trouble. Where is my back bone?

    Thanks ya'll! Maybe I will have to be patient (not my strong suit)? Natalie, I'd be curious to know what your doc says -- good luck! As far as other personal care products, as far as I can tell everything is gluten free now. The only suspect item is my face cleaner -- from Trader Joe's -- which lists "oat amino acid" as an ingredient. I haven't looked into whether that could be a problem. I wear my hair in a ponytail a lot since I'm pretty athletic (running, cycling). I've started wearing one of those cloth headbands when I run, which hides most of the bald back of my head. I'd be so happy just to see stubble. Heather
  6. Hi there, I was diagnosed gluten intolerant in November, just before Thanksgiving (nice timing!). About two months prior, in September, I noticed a couple round spots where my hair fell out. I figured it was brought on by stress, but read recently that there's a connection between gluten sensitivity and alopecia areata. Anyway, it's been six months and the hair hasn't come back. If anything the spots have gotten bigger since going gluten free. I've been using Nioxin, but just switched to a gluten-free shampoo and conditioner just on the off chance that there's something gluten-derived in Nioxin (I've heard mixed reports). The little bumps that appeared on my bald spots are clearing up, which is something. Has anyone had this problem, and if so, how long did it take before your hair came back? This has happened to me once before, in 2007, and it came back within a few months. It's pretty disturbing. I look like a sumo wrestler if I put my hair in a ponytail. Any help would be most appreciated. Heather

  8. Thanksgiving Potluck - Help!

    Thank you everyone! You are right, I am just in the infant stage of this new life, and have SO much to learn. I'm cleaning up my diet but I haven't cleaned my kitchen (of gluten) yet, for example. I probably will bring a little something for me and to share, and maybe something for dessert that agrees with me, since the pies are out. I LOVE the cornish hen idea. If I had more time, I would definitely do that. We'll see how this goes...at least my mom gets it. She won't be the one telling me, "Oh, a little stuffing isn't so bad, is it?"   9. Hi everyone, I'm brand new to this forum, and just got diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity on Friday...three days ago! Thanksgiving is coming and so is my mother and one of her friends. But instead of either one of us cooking, we're going to friend's sister's house for a Thanksgiving potluck at her 55-up neighborhood. (I'm underage) I don't know the status of the turkeys (stuffed/unstuffed). And with all sorts of people bringing all of the other dishes, I'll have no real way of knowing what's in everything. I need to stay strictly gluten free, but don't want to be a pain in the rear and ask everyone what they put in their potatoes. Any help in how to deal with this meal would be much appreciated! I'm still learning how to adjust my diet and here we are in holiday time. Fun stuff! Heather
