I was mostly symptom free after three months no gluten. I believe it takes that long for the gluten anti-bodies to leave your system? I have been reglutened twice since then, and all the symptoms returned with a vengeance, but after a few days they resolved. I am no expert, but I think the longer you are off gluten, if you are reglutened it hits you harder because you have less antibodies. If someone could set me straight it would be appreciated.

Gluten and the thyroid and pancreas
Has anybody noticed that gluten affected the function of their thyroid gland, resulting in a slowed metabolism and weight gain or inability to lose weight, and/or their pancreas, affecting insulin levels, which also make it hard to lose weight? If so, were these glands able to recover and get back to normal after being gluten free, and how long did this take? Thanks

Thanks lady. I suspect I may actually be celiac since I recently discovered it is in my family, but I am going gluten free instead of getting tested. I am just starting to grapple with the truth that I cant have ANY gluten, even low gluten. BTW beans, etc. don't bloat me at all. Speaking of credible sources, I am starting to think that wheat belly doctor William Davis is NOT ONE! Any other sources you guys can recommend are appreciated!

Beer Belly-is it also gluten belly?
I love beer and its the only gluten containing food I cant eliminate. What guy can give up beer on a hot summer night? I switched to Miller Lite, which supposedly has been tested to have a very low level of gluten. After three months gluten free except for that, I still have a beer belly and trouble losing weight. Just got back from a winery tour vacation  and for a full week not one beer. Low and behold, even after pigging out every day, no exercise, and lots of wine, only gained two pounds, pants still fit.
      Two questions:
      1. Is very low gluten beer OK, or is it best to switch to actual gluten free like Bard's?
      2. You don't see many wine drinkers with beer bellies. Since I am very active and dont eat much, can a beer belly be from the gluten as well as the calories and carbs?

Celiac causes fat Intolerance? Dr Davis says eat fat!?
I am not full blown celiac, although it is in my family, but definately gluten intolerant. Every once in a while I have to remind myself. Like Sunday night when I had spaghetti. Just getting over the 'brain fog' and nausea now!
I  read Wheat Belly Total Health and now I am really confused. He seems to have veered off track, and has morphed into a low carb advocate. He says ALL grains are bad, and to lose weight eliminate carbs and eat more fat. Isn't fat intolerance one of the digestive side effects of Celiac, caused by the gluten damage to the intestines?
I tried a low fat (gluten free of course) diet for six months, and didnt lose much weight, but felt real good digestion wise. I switched to the  Total Health  approach, GAINED WEIGHT, had to quit-all that fat is too hard to stomach, and no carbs except potatoes? The other grains that he villifies, like rice and couscous, have never given me any problems.
Now I am back to a gluten free low calorie approach, and making progress.
      Any thoughts appreciated!

Wheat Belly Total Health= High Fat?
Dr Davis, in his new book, seems to have veered off course, and is now advocating the elimination of ALL grains, and eating more fats. It is essentially a low carb diet. The only problem I see here is that thanks to the gluten, I suffer from fat malabsorption, as many gluten intolerants do, and I think a lot of full blown celiacs do as well. So what to make of this? Personally, I have had success following a low fat diet, which in essence is a low calorie diet as well, since fats have twice as many calories as carbs. My digestion was better too. Recently, in an attempt to lose more weight, I went low carb (gluten free of course). It was pretty hard to stick to, since I couldnt stomach all that meat and fat. I am now on a lowered calorie gluten free diet and making progress and feeling good. Thanks for your thoughts!

Dairy, But Not So Much Fat, Intolerance.
I tried going totally off dairy the last few days to see the effect. I am aware that lactose intolerance is a side effect, but I have a cheese tooth. Swiss is cocaine to me.
My belly feels better, but best of all is making happy gurgling noises and going down a bit. I guess I was in denial before, but its dairy free for me.
Fat intolerance may also be an issue. I always try to eat low fat meats, but I guess I thought dairy fat was different  or healthier than milk fat. Maybe its worse.

      Thyroid Issues?
As I understand, gluten attacks the thyroid gland, reducing metabolism. Has anyone felt that their metabolism picked improved after being gluten free. Can the thyroid even heal itself, like the liver can?
Also, I believe the pancreas is affected, reducing digestive enzyme output. Maybe it just the absence of gluten, but my digestion has improved after three months of being gluten free.

    10. BarryC added a post in a topic Strange Question But I'm Curious...

I am a guy with a huge bloated belly, looks like I am 9 months pregnant. What annoys me is that there is no fat and I actually have a sixpack. Everyone probably assumes I am a heavy drinker.

      Carbohydrate Sensitivity Or Fat Sensitivity?
Since being totally gluten free for almost a month, I have a reduction in most of the other side effects except for the bloating. As I understand it, the compromised digestive system will have a hard time digesting either fats or carbs, maybe both, until the villi grow back (very simplified).
I tried eating low fat for a week and felt no difference. This week I went low carb, except for some gluten free bread for my lunch sandwhich. I noticed I had much less bloating. I am a light eater, with the usual day being a bowl of cereal for breakfast, sandwhich for lunch, and meat and potato for supper. I would start getting gas buildup in the morning, which would increase after lunch until it was almost unbearable. Then I had To lay down after supper.Cutting back the carbs, especially early in the day, sure helped me. Anyone else notice this effect?

      Hi Irishheart
No I have not had a test done to totally confirm celiac-my doc pooh-poohs the idea. He is very old school, and believes my weight problems and sore muscles, are a result of overeating and lack of exercise. I wish he could see me eat 1500 calories a day and run 20 minutes a day  on my treadmill! He also diagnosed me with adult A.D.D., and has me on welbutrin, but the mental issues have cleared up as well. Honestly, the internet and this forum has been so helpful. Keep up the good work!

I have taken this on and off for years. It helped with my sore knees, but the knee problems went away after I ditched the gluten. I have done a bit of research and apparently glucosamine can reduce intestinal inflammation much as it does musculoskeletal, and also binds to lectins escorting them out of the body.
Anybody use glucosamine and what are your experiances?

    14. BarryC added a post in a topic Anyone's Doctor Know Why You Can Eat As Much Fat As I Want, Have A Normal Fecal Fat Test But Not Gain Weight?!?

It is my understanding that fat malabsorption is a side effect of celiac, so if its not getting digested its not turning into fat. But, it will cause digestive issues because it hangs around for a long time in your stomach waiting to get broken down. Low fat diets never helped me  lose weight, only low carb. It wasn't until recently I concluded it wasny the carbs it was the gluten in the bread mostly. BTW rice is great-and doesn't cause bloating.

I was wondering how many of you have digestive issues such as gas and bloating after drinking alcohol, even supposedly 'safe' drinks like wine.
Is it possible that with a compromised digestive system, alcohol is not processed as well?
