Thank you Ruth. I wish she could have stayed on the medication. I am happy it worked for you. We were hoping for remission when we were first told about the methimazole but even then we were told it was uncommon. You are very fortunate. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

My 4 year old was diagonsed with Graves disease a couple of weeks ago. We tried the methimazole but it made her really sick! She is having her thyroid removed this week to get her under control. Her thyroid levels are very high and her resting heartbeat was 130+. I would definately try the medication first but know that not everyone can tolerate it. I don't know if it is because she is so young or not but she was hospitalized with swollen and painful joints and a terrible rash, all due to the medication.

Apart from the medication you can do radioactive iodine or surgery. They both result in the same thing. Removal of the thryoid gland. I choose not to give my child radiation because she is so young but that is the preferred method today. It is quick and painless but lots of radiation involved. If she was older we would probably have done that.'s surgery..with all the complications that go along with it. The other risks are accidental removal of the paratyhroid glands that regulate your calcium levels and possible damage to the laryngeal nerves. Make sure your surgeon has done lots of these procedures!

So you do have choices, just don't ignore need to do something as untreated Graves disease is very hard on your body. It might go into remission with the medication but that is not the expected outcome. I hope you feel better soon and are not faced with the choices we were. Good Luck to you.

The only powder with gluten are chocolate malt and no sugar ones.
The ready mixed strawberry has barley extract, the others I think are ok.

The baked potatoes and sour cream are fine. I eat them often. Check that they don't use flour to stop cheese from clumping before you add cheese to it. I worry about cc with the other things.

I like lubriderm lotion, Paul Mitchell intense daily moisture shampoo and conditioner, Dove hair care and skin lotions...there are a few exceptions but gluten will not be hidden so just read the label, Garnier Fructis has been reported to be gluten-free but I don't use them.

Dove bodywash is a good replacement for shaving cream . Vaseline is gluten-free and a great nightly face cream.

Lipsticks are very important to be gluten-free. Do a search and you'll find lots of suggestions. The Bare Essentials line is mostly gluten-free and really nice.

Wines....YES thank goodness!!!! I think you are safe with straight wine. Wine Coolers need to be checked for malt.

You might have a intolerance to lactose if you are bloated all the time.

Good luck and this gluten-free thing does get easier once you learn how to play the game.......

I had my gallbladder removed and have none of those troubles. Sounds more like a bowel problem....whether it is celiac or something else. I would definately encourage him to see a doctor.

The skin rashes could be DH. It usually looks like little blisters that are very itchy. I can tell I am getting one before I can see it.

Good Luck and I hope he gets some answers.

Coke and Pepsi products are OK. I have never heard of a ground coffee that has gluten. Be careful of specialty coffee houses as some of thier mixed coffees have gluten added. Most Starbucks drinks are gluten-free.

The same goes for tea. The lipton tea bags are fine as most are. Be careful of exotic teas.

It does get easier with time to figure out this gluten-free stuff. I hope you are feeling better soon.

It's made by Kraft and it is in a green shaker tube. It is hard to find though. The only place I have found it is in Walmart. It is the same cheese they put in their macaronni and cheese box dinners.
