    Well, I feel your pain. I am in Japan were there is also NO knowledge of Celiac/gluten sensitivity. In fact, I was printing off documents to give to my doctor to read! I never eat in restaurants due to cross contamination. I can't tell you how many times I have had the conversation: "Oh, you can't eat soy sauce because you are allergic to soybeans?" "No, I can't have soy sauce because it has wheat in it." "No it doesn't" "Yes, it does." At best I have been able to get people to understand I am "allergic" to wheat. So, I have become a cook and I make all my meals. I don't necessarily like it, but in the end I know I am eating healthier! Check out They have very cheap shipping to Japan-- not sure about France. But I get my gluten-free soy sauce and a lot of other goodies from them.
  2. LIndt 85% was my go to chocolate for years. I LOVE it. One day I noticed the back label looked different. It now said "produced on shared equipment with wheat..." I contacted the company and they confirmed they changed their manufacturing line and the 85% was produced on a line with wheat. BUT, I live overseas and this chocolate has many languages on the label. It is possible that the bars for the overseas market are made on a shared line. I don't know where the US sold bars are made. Prior to this label change I ate it everyday and never had a problem. Sadly, after the label change I had to stop......
  3. The other day I forgot my lunch and ended up in a convenience store to buy lunch. Japanese convenience stores often have hard boiled eggs. They are in the "deli" section with salads. They are sold as two or one egg (vs. a pack of 6 or so which would be raw). I also got a banana and a cucumber! I had some salt in my car so it worked out fine. Sesame oil makes a great tasting salad dressing to put on veggies. I haven't had a problem with take out sushi packs but I avoid anything with seaweed in it or anything with a sauce.   Also Soyjoy bars are gluten free:

    Will you be on a 2 meal a day plan or 3? If you are on a 2 meal a day plan and you can keep a mini fridge in your room then you can always have yogurt, gluten-free cereal, peanut butter, etc. You can make at least one meal on your own.
  6. I didn't check it for being gluten free, but I am using Ban deodorant (green container). I bought it in Sept. and it is now Feb. and I am still on the same container! It lasts forever. So budget-wise, if you are looking for something that isn't too expensive and lasts a long time, I recommend that!
  7. Breakfast

    There are a lot of recipes online for eggs cooked in muffin tins. They are mixed with vegetables and other goodies. If you have time on Sunday you could make up a dozen or so of those then keep them in the fridge to warm up on busy weekday mornings.
  8. What was the ingredient in the MAC lipstick? I doubt it said "gluten" and it was more likely some hidden name. I'd like to check mine!
  9. I like dried cranberries and dried mangoes. Similar in texture to a chewy candy for me.
  10. I take my own food. NO messing with what airlines might make. I find that cheese, salami, rice crackers travel well. I also bring bars (Lara, Kind) and nuts and fruit. Whatever I don't eat on the plane I just toss in the flight attendant's bag when they come around at the end of the flight to clean up. I've never had a problem taking anything through security in the US or Japan.
  11. You can "make" your own mirin by mixing some sake and sugar. I've had homemade miso from a friend who made sure the kogi was from rice and I have been ok. Still makes me nervous.   Yes, it is hard!
  12. On a trip to Malaysia and Singapore I pigged out on mangosteen. Not for health reasons, but because I love the taste of the fruit. I found out the hard way that there are no toilets in the jungle..... cleaned me out real good!
  13. Glucose From Wheat

    Good timing of this question. I was going to ask the same thing. Tonight I was looking at "After Eight" chocolates. The label says glucose syrup which wouldn't flag anything for me. However, the Japanese label (I live in Japan) translates it as "mizuame" which is a sweetener BUT they say what it was derived from and it says wheat. I put them back. Then I came back to Google this and various sites said glucose syrup is so processed there is no gluten even if it was originally derived from wheat.......
  14. I love EOS lip balms. I have found them at Costco where there is a set of 6 (I think) different flavors. Eos makes hand cream too which is also gluten free.
  15. Problem with Japanese chocolates is that I find them "waxy." Maybe soy lecithin? I just ordered some chocolate from the US. Not as convenient as popping in to a store to get some but that may be a good thing.   I did notice last week I was extremely exhausted. I took a nap every day. Since I quit the chocolate a few days ago I have been fine! I haven't felt tired or sluggish at all.
