varthurs added a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & MedicationsSkinny Girl ProductsBelow is the response I promptly received from Skinnygirl regarding gluten in their products. I'm curious if what they say about distillation is correct and if these would be considered safe? Thanks.
The ingredients in Skinnygirl Margarita are not produced from cereals containing gluten and do not contain gluten.
The alcohol in Skinnygirl Sangria do not contain gluten. A portion of the other ingredients in this product were produced from cereals containing gluten that were added prior to distillation. Gluten can be found in small grains such as rye, barley, oats, wheat, etc. It is generally accepted that the process of distillation excludes gluten in the finished product.
The primary alcohol sources in Skinnygirl Cosmo, Bare Nakes, Cucumber, and Tangerine are produced from the fermentation and distillation of cereals containing gluten such as rye, barley, oats, wheat, etc.. varthurs added a topic in Celiac Disease - Coping WithDone With ThisThis is a vent, feel sorry for myself post.
I was diagnosed with GERD, Barretts Esophagus and celiac disease about 6 weeks ago and went gluten and dairy free.
I started to feel better until last week when my Mom passed away after a long battle with cancer. it was so difficult to manage this diet with all of the company from out of town, being stressed, pasta dinners made by well meaning people, etc. I thought I did ok until Tuesday when I went to the diner. I asked the waitress if they had a gluten free menu and she said "you mean some kind of lunch specials?" I should have RAN!! Instead, I went "safe" and ordered an egg salad platter (on lettuce). It had coleslaw, egg salad and potato salad. I thought it was ok. I have been sick since. Woke up Wednesday morning violently ill and spent the whole day in the bathroom. Then I decided since I felt so disgusting anyway, that i'd just eat the orange gel rings (gluten free, but chocolate has lactose). Now it's Friday night and I am a mess. My stomach is crampy and bloated, I am in a fog and totally depressed. Now of course, I can't figure out if this is all stress related to my Mom or if it is a combination of both. Anyone want to share how long their sickness from being glutened lasts? This is my first time.
Anyway, this sucks and I am so mad that I have this stupid disease. It's making my life miserable. To make matters worse, I am going through the death of my Mom and have NO source of comfort. Can't eat, can't smoke (quit 2 months ago) and can't drink alcohol (Barrett's). UGH!!!!!
Thanks for the vent. It's impossible to explain to other people. I feel like they are all sick of hearing me talk about this. I am sick of listening to me.

varthurs added a topic in Celiac Disease - Coping WithFreaked OutI have been gluten free for 3 weeks (confirmed celiac by blood work and biopsy) and I have also been lactose free for 1 week.
Today when I went to the bathroom, my stool was yellow and had oil around it.
Does this mean I have eaten something with either lactose or gluten? This is the first time I've ever seen this and it scared me. I have been super careful about what I'm eating, so don't see how I could have made a mistake.

varthurs added a topic in Celiac Disease - Related Disorders & ResearchFructose Intolerance?A little history:
Back in October I started doing the South Beach Diet. While on Phase 1 (no carbs, only veggies and lean protein/low fat dairy) I have never felt better. When I went off I felt VERY ill. Being a constant Weight Watcher member, I was amazed that I could do this South Beach and feel so unbloated and ungassy. On WW I was always suffering with gas and bloating. That is when I suspected Celiac. I went for a blood test and it came back positive. I went for my endoscopy last Monday and the doctor said he sees abnormalities and to start eating gluten free. He also saw an excessive amount of reflux and put me on daily Prilosec. I see him next Monday to get the official results of the biopsy.
So now I started eating gluten free. Trying to eat all non-processed foods. It has been 1 week. My head is clearer but my stomach is still horrible. Yesterday with lunch I ate a nectarine and flavored seltzer. About an hour after I was in excruciating pain and the terrible gas started. I did not eat ANYTHING that could have been contaminated yesterday. At first I thought may be the seltzer, but it said water, carbonation and natural flavors.
I am starting to suspect that I have a fructose intolerance. I have always had gas issues with apples, grapes and raisins. But I also wonder if I am just not healed yet and it's the celiac.
Thanks in advance

varthurs added a topic in Celiac Disease - Coping WithOverwhelmedStarted gluten free diet yesterday. I have been reading up about what are safe and unsafe foods, but I am feeling very overwhelmed by the list. Any suggestions on how to start this up a little less painfully? I am reading labels and cross checking my unsafe list, but I can't deal with doing that every time I want to eat something. Should I go to a nutritionist? Would that be helpful?

varthurs added a topic in Gluten-Free RestaurantsNew To This - Need HelpI am brand new to this - just started eating gluten free yesterday, after my biopsy. I know that Outback and Olive Garden offer gluten-free dishes. I am a very busy Mom of 2 kids that always have me running. We eat out alot. If I were to go to any random restaurant and ask for a grilled chicken breast, a baked potato and veggies, would that be safe? Or does it have to be only a restaurant that offers gluten-free?
Going out tonight for my parents anniversary. This weekend is my husbands birthday. I hate to think that there are only 2 choices nearby.

varthurs added a topic in Celiac Disease - Coping WithSad, Worried, Sad, Sad, Sad, Worried, Etc.I have recently received blood tests that would indicate that I have Celiac Disease. I'm waiting for appt. with specialist. But honestly, I asked my Doctor to test me for it, so i'm pretty sure I have this lovely condition no matter what the biopsy says. And boy oh boy, am I SAD. Isn't that a strange reaction? But really, no more beer? My favorite meals are all italian, pasta, breaded chicken cutlets. I am a junk food junkie. Pretzels are my favorite snack. And on top of this, I am a lazy cook. For that, I am very worried. How am I going to survive this? Sorry, I figured if there was a place to vent, it would be here. I really just want to cry.
But on the same note, I really want to feel better. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. Can anyone give me some good news? Can I expect to lose weight (need to lose about 20)? Will my fatigue go away? Anxiety be gone? Is this going to be a cure-all, or I am weighing too much on this?
Oh and I am also already dreading that one of my kids is going to have this because of me.
Sorry to be all "debbie downer".
