  1. Hi Lisa--the test we did was to have my daughter "fill" a bag by breathing into it every 15 minutes. We capped the bag and labeled it. I think it gets sent off somewhere--so I don't know the numbers yet. I was thinking about the poor company that does these tests and HOPES for a higher accuracy rate--which could be higher if the nurses administered it...
  2. Thinking of you! In our house we "fell" one by one -- first one daughter was diagnosed, then the second, then me. We ended up purging the house of all gluten. We call our house the "all-inclusive" dining experience and don't let anyone bring anything over. It's just simpler... It might be good to have everyone in the...
  3. As a quick update, we did the SIBO breath test yesterday at Children's Hospital in LA. Results due back Tuesday. Super simple test (the nurse had ME administer it...which was a slight bit annoying just because I'm sure it costs insurance an arm and a leg...). My daughter was a champ. Took about 2.5 hours all in.
  4. Hi Lisa, Thank you so much. We are going to the allergist tomorrow...we'll see how receptive she is... (She is the doctor who did finally do the Celiac testing for my kids after I had asked and been turned down by the pediatricians for 18 months...so, I have hope!). Courtney
  5. thanks Lisa! I'll take any/all links to this you have. A couple questions: - I've read mixed reviews on the DAO blood serum test. Have you read anything definitive? What is your opinion? - Have you read anything about doing a two week trial where you go on anti-histamines for two weeks--if symptoms go away (they are supressed, really), then go through...
  6. Wow! This is an amazing perspective! Thank you! I'm going to go to the kitchen, eat some chocolate chips, do the dishes, get kids to bed and come back an re-read that! Thank you! I doubt we would have ever thought to look at the histamine list! She's still eating a tiny bit of chocolate, pineapple, and many other things on that list! Avocado made...
  7. Hi Lisa, Thank you so much for your input. It's interesting, we see two specialists in LA--a GI pain specialist and a Celiac researcher. The pain specialist is also considered one of the thought leaders in SIBO in kids. From what I'm gathering, SIBO is typically an adult "term" and that there are lots of kids with undiagnosed SIBO. We removed almost...
  8. Hi there, We have a six year old who was diagnosed a year ago with Celiac. We were gluten-free and happy/no problems until about month 9 gluten free. She developed abdominal pain below her belly button which is moderate, constant pain and sometimes flares up. We have had numerous doctors visits (also with our Celiac GI) and are now embarking on an effort...
  9. looking forward to hearing about the can lining. ...as another data point, I can't do anything with canola oil ...we LOVE tuna with avocado mash ...I also use soy-free vegenaise (from Whole Foods) and like it Good luck!
  10. Hi there, I will add another layer: lectins. We have a wonderful little girl who is about to turn 6 who had itching (no rashes) and joint/muscle pain 2-3 times a week. Eventually she was diagnosed Celiac. We took her off gluten and her itching/joint/muscle pain went from 8-12 times a month to about once a month. I mentioned this to my cardiologist...
  11. :) Awesome. It looked a little like the Gunks in New York. Jtree was awesome--with little kids we're only doing single pitches these days! We also climbed at Red Rocks outside Las Vegas earlier this year--gorgeous rock, friendlier than Jtree! Keep climbing!

  13. I didn't want to high-jack the persons thread, you had asked a question in. Nice to hear from a person in the forum that knows how to tie a figure eight knot. The climb is at barn bluff in redwing Minnesota. All single pitch climbs. Nothing compared to joshua tree (soooo jealous). Cheers.

  14. Mom to fraternal twin girls with Celiac Disease.

10/2010 Suspected Twin B had issues with gluten (itching and severe nighttime joint pain). No doctors would test!

12/2011 Convinced allergist (my childhood friend) to test

4/2012 Confirmed both girls with celiac disease

Currently gluten loading around town (not in our gluten-free home!) so I can test!

  15. I really really really appreciate you all! Thank you for all your insights, sharing your stories, tolerating my questions This has to be one of the best, most helpful, kind, gentle, honest online groups I've ever encountered. The silver lining of Celiac Disease Heartfelt gratitude! And, as I discovered in my St. Patrick's Day wanderings: ...
  16. Just to double check from a scientific standpoint, which of these statements are correct? - Using soap and water will wash away but not deactivate gluten - White vinegar will kill just the glutenin - Bleach will deactivate just the glutenin - Everclear will deactivate both the gliadin and the glutenin - Everclear will deactivate both the gliadin...
  17. Boy are people at the store going to think I have a problem...me marching out with a case of everclear!!! I'm just going to be honest, "Just going to do some sanitizing of my kitchen, you know, kill the gluten!" They're going to think I've lost it! ...and, perhaps I have! One way or another, I'm going to rid my house of that nasty protein!
  18. I have a 5 year old who I believe has sleep apnea and who is about to be confirmed as Celiac. No doctor has believed me that she has sleep apnea (but I should know--I figured out on day 5 of her life that she had Apnea of Prematurity--holding her breath 45% of her sleep time--all the nurses in the hospital missed that for the 4 days she was there!!!). ...
  19. My DH and I are debating how best to "sanitize" the kitchen of gluten. We're trying to understand the science behind what destroys gluten. Here is all I've learned/found so far: gluten is not water soluble, gliadin is alcohol-soluble and glutenin is soluble in acids/alkalis. From wikipedia: Gluten is the composite of a gliadin and a glutelin, which...
  20. I was just on Maui and had the treat of going to Hawaiian Moons health food store (I think that's what it was called). Tons of gluten-free products, same prices as mainland Whole Foods for the most part. Incidentally, my DH came across this good review of Celiac and Princeville on Kauaui: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60626-d1023257-r...
