  1. A sort of gluten morning after pill... hmmm. Well, I must have glutened myself also this past Thursday because I felt like I got beaten with a 2x4 this weekend and am just now beginning to feel better. Hopefully you didn't go through anything like that! For me I start to feel uneasy and anxious, then the gut pain starts and I just need to take it very easy until it starts to feel better. During this time I'm like a wounded animal... a fight or flight state of emotion and not very nice to be around! So I usually retreat to my man cave or go to a happy place like a quiet section of a home improvement store and browse. Weird, but it works. It's a combination of rest and doing something relatively passive to take my mind off the pain. The leader of a celiac support group I attend said "thank God for symptoms." Without symptoms you would probably just totally destroy your gut and be none the wiser until it was way too late. So that makes sense, but I still would like to find some more and better ways of treating symptoms when they occur because they can be pretty discouraging. The next time I am about to stupidly ingest some gluten I think instead I will just ask around and find someone about to fire off a big cannon and go stand in front of it with my gut. It will probably have about the same effect!
  2. Newly Diagnosed

    This reminds me of some of the symptoms I experienced prior to being diagnosed celiac. An occasional aching in my right side upper abdomen became a constant burning that never completely went away. This was accompanied by a lot of burping when the pain was at its worst. After going gluten free 45 days ago (& dairy free 14 days) the constant pain is getting better, with some frustrating reoccurences from time to time. After a brief period of doubting upon being informed I could not longer eat normal bread, etc etc, I have arrived at a place of gratitude if that's all I need to do to keep the pain at bay. Abdominal pain is no fun at all!

    Thanks for your responses. I'm glad I took the time to write this up a little, because in hindsight it seems like I made a pretty risky move. I did ask about the ingredients of the breading, but of course there are several steps along the way including the frying which could be susceptible to CC. I think it's best just to stay away from this menu item for the forseeable future. Contacting the corporate office is a great idea (they are a chain) and also a more detailed conversation with a local manager on the preparation process would be in good order. Now that I've had a pretty bad reaction I'm kicking myself for being careless, I guess it's called learning the hard way! Thanks again!

    The endoscopy recommendation I think will depend on your symptoms. If you are experiencing chronic, serious issues that likely could be a result of something wrong in your stomach and/or small intestine then it's probably worth doing the procedure. They are able to view the condition of the tissue and also take biopsies so it's pretty good information. That said it's not a procedure to take lightly, there are risks with it and it's not fun at all. In my case, I was in enough pain that I knew something was seriously not right and I needed to figure out what the heck was going on, so that kind of made the decision for me.

    That might take some time and testing. Two tests my doctor recommended right away were a CT scan and an upper endoscopy. Both of these are expensive, time consuming and a little intimidating. But if you are experiencing serious symptoms like I was I would not hesitate to have these done. The CT scan was not so bad and I'm guessing it did rule out a few things like massive tumors in my gut. Since I was feeling pretty good after the CT scan I delayed scheduling the endoscopy since that sounded pretty harsh. But soon I was suffering to the point I scheduled the procedure as soon as possible. It was quite unpleasant, but totally necessary. The doctor was able to clearly see the damage to my small intestine and even made me look at the pictures. Yuck. So while I might have a bunch of questions I'm seeking answers to regarding healing, diet, etc, my doctor was able to state with "100% certainty" that I had celiac disease and gluten was causing severe damage to my gut.
  7. Mercy, and to think I did not know there was such a thing as a digestive enzyme. I clearly have a digestive problem that needs help in some form, I will give the enzymes a try in addition to the probiotic. Hopefully some combination of this with avoiding dairy will help my system improve. Poor little villi. The low FODMAP diet appears a bit involved to me at first glance... might need some time to digest that one!
  8. Thanks for your responses! I am currently taking a digestive probiotic by trunature which I assume is a digestive enzyme as has been suggested. I think perhaps lactose could be causing a gas issue leading to pain. My doctor seemed to not have anything to say about this except I must be swallowing air that makes me burp? I respectfully disagree because the pain just appears with no apparent correlation to any possible "air swallowing." So I think it's defintitely worth a shot eliminating lactose. If the villi are totally flat and not doing their job then somehow improperly digested lactose may be causing a problem. I don't recall my doctor saying anything about avoiding dairy so my diet if anything became more reliant on dairy since I was eliminating gluten containing foods... I ended up eating a lot of cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. Based on IH's recommendations I picked up some coconut versions of milk, creamer and ice cream. I had no clue such things existed, but they are actually pretty good! Thanks again for your comments!
  9. Thanks IH. So I guess omeprazale IS my "painkiller" for the time being. Hmmm. Thankfully I have not felt compelled to take Tylenol too often. That a little surprising it has no benefit at all for gut pain, it would be nice if there were some OTC med that would help! I have found that rest helps mitigate the pain so I have that going for me, although not too much else to show for it except for extra time on the couch.

Here are the results from my labs, confirmed with a doctor visit on 3/13/2012: Desc: Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum Result: 174 mg/dL Range: 70-400 mg/dL Flag: None Desc: t-Transglutaminase (tTG) lgA Result: 78 U/ml Range: 0-3 U/ml Flag: H t-Transglutaminase (tTG) lgA: Negative: 0-3 Weak positive: 4-10 Positive: >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. My doctor said the pictures from my endoscopy indicated the villi were pretty much all atrophied or flattened, about as gone as they can be. Anyway, my main symptom is pretty severe right side abdominal pain starting around Christmas 2011. The pain cycles up and down over 5-10 day periods. When it gets bad I belch a lot, which temporarily relieves the pain, but it takes days to mitigate and never goes away altogether. I started taking omeprazole (Prilosec) in late January which seemed to help somewhat and I am still taking this every day. When I have tried to stop taking it a couple of times the pain seemed to get worse. At the moment I am feeling a little better, but last week was pretty bad and I have been on a (as far as I know) strict gluten-free diet since March 13.   12. I was diagnosed about 3 weeks ago so I am pretty new to a strict gluten free diet, although I started cutting way back on gluten after it was "probable" I had an issue around 2 months ago. Anyway, my major issue is middlish right side abdominal pain which can be severe at times. It kind of cycles up and down, the doctor thinks it's due to pretty severe sprue in the upper intestine (the villi or whatever they are called are all gone). When the pain gets really bad it's accompanied by a lot of belching which seems to relieve the pain for the moment. And also some flatulence, but not that bad. Recently the pain returned and I noticed it's now accompanied by feeling worse emotionally (very short temper), fatigue and also tingling/numbness in my hands. I assume this could be a nutritional deficiency but my blood tests showed pretty normal for most things tested (which was quite a few)including vitamin B12. I am thinking of taking a B12 supplement just to see if it helps. I am also thinking I need another visit with the GI doctor, since I was feeling better for a bit but last week started to feel pretty bad again. The numbness thing is a little freaky so I just thought I would see if anyone has thoughts on that. B12 seems to be one possible explanation, are there others? Thanks! Mark
