  1. gluten-free Diet & Exercise

    Thanks to everyone who replied. To answer why I am on this diet, I was instructed to do so because I couldn't clear my rash and the dreaded GI problems for some reason. It reappears if I re-introduce gluten free grains. My hope is to only be on it for another 6 months to a year then try to re-introduce again. I have become super-sensitive to food. I assume because I was misdiagnosed for so long. My sister and I have horrible neurological problems from gluten so I wonder if our brains and bodies are on hyper-drive when it comes to even trace amounts of gluten. But I am hopeful that my body get with the regular gluten free program because this diet SUCKS -so difficult!   dilettantesteph: food dehydrator! I hadn't thought of that because dried fruit isn't allowed but I assume if you do it yourself it would be ok. Thanks! I only get very limit amounts of diary because of a diary intolerance. (D'oh, stupid food intolerances!!)
  2. Has anyone done century bike rides on a gluten-free diet? I have been a long time cyclist but I was hit by a van before getting diagnosed with Celiac. It took me about 6 years to start bicycling again. I am on Dr. Fasano's diet (basically no grains and only whole fresh foods -nothing processed). I find it difficult to do longer bike rides (over 2 hours) because of the food requirements. Has anyone found food to sustain you on longer rides, centuries, or even runners doing longer runs/marathons?   TIA!
  3. I, too, was put on Dr. Fasano's diet. It has been wonderful. It isn't easy but I highly recommend it.

    Hello there! I was in a very similar situation when I was working on my undergraduate degree. I wasn't diagnosed at the time but had a horrible year. I moved across the USA (from my parents' home in the West to attend school on the East Coast). I moved into an apartment dorm. I didn't have enough money for a meal plan and my parents refused to buy me one. I got a work study job and had exactly $5 a week for food. This means I ate a ton of pasta and cereal! I also had 3 roommates who would give me beer. Holy gluten, Batman! I fell apart by the end of the semester! I got very sick with pneumonia. The depression and anxiety was insane. The university medical center put me on Paxil. I was a total mess by the end of the semester! My grades were not good. Total mess! I really cannot speak to your ASD. My niece and nephew have Asperger's and I doubt they will ever be "cured". But what I will give you is some hope regarding school. I had to take a year off from school. I ended up going a lower tier university once I got my health back on track. I ended up graduating Summa Cum Laude. I got into a pretty good graduate program! I earned my MA. Don't give up! You can turn it around. It takes a lot of work but it can be done. When applying to another university, I would absolutely discuss your issues with admissions. Explain what happened. When you get into another university, please talk with dining services or try to find an off campus roommate situation, if you can swing it. Some universities also have graduate student dorms, which are apartment-style. I would investigate if you could get into one of those so you are able to cook on your own.
  5. I just posted on another thread but my sister and I have kids and went through pregnancies without being diagnosed! We weren't gluten free while pregnant because we didn't know. Having children with Celiac disease is completely possible. My sister has 3 kids and I have 2. In both our cases, only one child has celiac (both boys).
  6. Smart decision!! My sister and I both have Celiac disease and went through multiple pregnancies without knowing. Our pregnancies were hard and high risk and our children have numerous problems (autism, apraxia, MERLD, heart condition). While we have no *proof* that the Celiac caused any of the disorders, I think science will discover that it is really bad. I know a neurologist at Children's Hospital in Washington, DC who is researching pregnancies with undiagnosed Celiac. So far, he said his preliminary findings were very troubling.

    Hang in there. It is an overwhelming diagnosis but it gets easier! Once you start feeling better life is awesome. Your energy levels will be through the roof. There are so many gluten free breads now too. Costco even carries a brand now!
  8. Just So Tired Of It All

    Thank you for the replies. I was in a very bad mood after back-to-back pizza nights for my children's preschools. We ended up not going because I am not buying a pizza we cannot eat and also bringing a gluten free pizza that tastes horrible! If anyone knows of a good gluten-free pizza, let me know. Homemade Pizza Company is good but I get cross contamination. And to the previous poster, I don't cheat and have gluten. Sorry I didn't make that clearer. I cannot take care of my kids if I have gluten. In fact, I can't even get out of bed unless you count laying on the bathroom floor vomiting and sweating profusely from the rotational vertigo. The Celiac Center at U of MD put me on a very strict diet. I am to avoid even processed gluten free foods and other grains. It just gets old. I just need to suck it up, I know. It just gets very difficult sometimes.
  9. I have two kids who are speech delayed and one of whom has Celiac. He had mERLD, which is often mistaken for Autism. My other child has childhood apraxia of speech. The speech therapists who have worked with my kids don't discount the Celiac/speech problem connection but ultimately there is little research on this. I would say if you are concerned contact your county/city Early Intervention program. They will assess your child and determine how to proceed. I will add that your pediatrician might not be concerned because boys tend to speak later than girls. Go with your gut instinct though.
  10. I have been gluten free for 3 years now. I have been seen at the Celiac Center at University of MD. The doctor put me on a very strict diet of fresh meat, fresh fruit, fresh veggies with as little grains or processed foods as possible. Needless to say, this restrictive diet is very hard to maintain. I often cheat and will eat processed gluten free foods and develop horrible rash. I also at times discover new and unknown sources of gluten. Accidental exposure to gluten means I get horrible GI issues for about a week and horrible rotational vertigo for 1 to 2 days after. (As a side note: rotational vertigo for 2 days makes me basically incapacitated and I have a 2 and 4 year old.) I am so tired of it all. I am sick of the social isolation. EVERYTHING social involves food. My children are in different preschools and both schools have pizza night and food oriented parties. I am so sick of going to these events because I have to lug food we can eat (my 4 yo has Celiac too). I hate having to explain Celiac and gluten free. If one more person tells me "it's the new FAD diet," I am going to scream. Yes, I love spending $7 on a loaf of bread for the FAD of it. They just don't seem to understand, it is a medical diet. I loathe my mother-in-law, who is not from the US, who feels Celiac is an imaginary disorder. She constantly tries to feed my son gluten containing items. She also bakes pies and is a cake decorator so her house is TOTALLY cross-contaiminated. After many years of getting ill while visiting, I said no more. She can come visit us. I just cannot travel anymore. The risk of exposure is too great. Obviously, I am just ranting! I wish I could have a pint of Guinness and a decent pizza.
