I just got back from Vegas and was very surprised how easy it was to eat there. I had e-mailed Treasure Island where we stayed about gluten free options at their restaurants and they sent me a complete list of foods from every restaurant there. It was very helpful. We live in a small town and waiters look at you like you're some kind of freak when you bring up "gluten free." There everyone was knowlegeable and very helpful. Never once had a reaction wherever we ate. One I would definitely recommend is Maggiano's in the Fashion Mall. When I asked for a gluten free menu the waiter left and immediately came out with the chef who went over the menu and helped me make choices. He was wonderful and very accommodating in fixing what I wanted. The pasta was wonderful and the prices were very reasonable.
I did have an issue with Denny's at breakfast. I was given a computer sheet loaded with greasy finger prints for a menu. At the top it said it was last updated in 2008. When I asked for an updated one, the waiter left and came back and said nothing had changed. Clearly things have because there were things listed that wern't even available on the menu any more. I opted not to take a chance and only had juice.
Also Gilley's right out side of Treasure Island had a very nice menu and everyone was very helpful. Their pulled pork was wonderful and had "real" mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. Definitely give it a try.
If you are near the Hermitage area, there is a support group that I belong to. We meet the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM. I was diagnosed 3 months ago, and everyone has been fantastic at this group. It's so comforting to talk to someone else who is going through the same issues. We'd love to have you at our meetings.
I tried the Kellogg's fruity snacks today. I saw them at WalMart, only fifty cents and thought they would be perfect for travel. I carefully checked the ingredients and saw that there was nothing listed that should be a red flag. Shortly after I developed a terrible case of really stinky gas, and then got a nose bleed. I was diagnosed 2 months ago and have been very diligent about my diet. Before going on the gluten-free diet, I had that terrible gas and had nose bleeds daily. This is the first one I have had since. It had to have been from these fruit snacks as I had nothing else different today. Has anyone else had a problem with them?
I've only been gluten free for 3 weeks now and went to Wendy's twice. The firt time I just got a baked potato with butter. That night I had a reaction, but couldn't figure out why. The second time I got chili and brought my own gluten free corn bread and used their butter on it. Had the same reaction. After going to their web site, I noticed that there was an asterisk after the butter spread, noting that it contained maltodextrin. Has anyone else had a reaction to maltodextrin? It seems like some say it's okay, and others say not. I'm afraid to eat anything with it in now. I've noticed several items in the grocery store clearly marked "gluten free", but still contain maltodextrin.
