  1. I live as if I have celiac's even though I don't have a formal diagnosis.  I had only the one blood test which was negative and I had an endoscopy but they only took 2 samples.  But all of my symptoms, including a rash which looked just like DH, cleared up when I went gluten-free and then dairy-free so I do believe it is actually celiacs.  Unfortunately my daughter is now having problems and I am worried it might be celiacs but the dr won't even look at that as a possibility bc he says I don't have it.  When I told him about her symptoms he just said that it is functional abdominal pain, without doing any sort of assessment.  We are going back again on September 10 and I am going to insist that he try and figure out what is going on.  She is 7.5 yrs old and for the last 4 month she's been getting increasingly more frequent stomach aches, some diarrhea, she says she is regurgitating in her mouth, she is more fatigued, cranky, just feeling blah.  This kid LOVES school and she keeps missing school due to her stomach aches.  This summer she even had to miss some days of camp and she was so upset.  The dr was trying to tell us that she must be anxious about school or something but I know that's not true.  Plus it has been getting progressively worse, even over the summer.  What can I do to at least get the dr to try and help my daughter in some way?  Maybe it isn't celiacs, maybe it's lactose intolerance or something completely different, but I just want some help for her.

I think it depends on the person but I know within an hour at most.  My symptoms are fairly severe.  Within 30-60 minutes my stomach starts rumbling, then the diarrhea and stomach pains hit, then I get a killer headache and total brain fog, feels like I've been drugged, dizzy, etc.  Depending on how severe the contamination was it lasts for anywhere from 1-5+ days.  When you say you ate eggs out of a buffet do you mean they were in a buffet with other foods?  You can't really eat foods at a buffet because the risk of cross-contamination is really high.  People use the same scoop for different food, crumbs from food can fall into the eggs.  Not to mention a lot of people with celiac have problems with dairy too.  The eggs likely had milk and butter in them.  I went gluten-free in November but then I started getting sick again and two weeks ago I had to go dairy-free as well and now symptoms are clearing up.
  3. I didn't start having solid bowel movements until 6 weeks after going gluten-free and I had digestive problems after eating for 6-8 weeks.  Give it time, it will start to improve.   One tip - do not eat tons of gluten-free products right at the start.  Try to avoid all the gluten-free breads, muffins, etc until your digestive system has a chance to rest, just eat whole foods.

I went gluten free in November and that wasn't too bad.  5 days ago I had to go dairy-free as well as I was getting sick from it.  Since then I am starving, I mean literally hungry every second to the point that my stomach hurts.  I can't sleep at night due to being so hungry.  I am making sure I get lots of protein and I eat very healthy.  I am trying to lose weight so I am on weight watchers and it was going fine until I cut out gluten and dairy.  What could be causing this extreme hunger?  I don't want to eat all the time or I'll gain weight.

    I am 3.5 months gluten free and I can't have dairy   I was still eating dairy until this past week but I was still sick all the time.  Then I finally decided to bite the bullet and get rid of dairy and my stomach bloat, gas, and diarrhea has gone away.  So I am going to do dairy free for 6 months and then try introducing small amounts again.  I don't know what in the world we are supposed to eat when we can't have gluten or dairy!
  6. I tried 3 different rice protein powders and I couldn't stand the taste of any of them.  I also tried some vegan mix ones and they were also not good.  The texture is bad and I put TONS of fruit and all I could taste was the powder.

  8. I am in Canada so I don't think we have that store.  I just tried 4 different powders with lots of fruit and almond milk.  All dumped down the sink after a couple sips.  I think I will die of malnutrition if I go dairy-free.  I barely like meat.  And I HATE to cook.

Is there a dairy free protein powder that doesn't taste like garbage??  I have been using Visalus protein powder and having two smoothies a day for two of my meals.  Now I am starting to get sick from the dairy.  I have tried Vega One and Sunwarrior and they both taste so gross I dumped it in the sink after one sip.  I don't like to eat meat or any meat substitutes (tofu, soy, etc) so I am freaking out right now about how to get protein.  I am starting to think I will just stop eating altogether.   Does anyone know of any dairy free protein powder that doesn't taste like dirt??

No, I've been drinking these smoothies all along, from day 1.  So it probably isn't that.  I don't know why the symptoms have come back.  I do notice that I react to some products that are labelled gluten free like Enjoy Life cookies or certain kinds of crackers and I can't figure out why.  I am going to try eating more natural foods and less gluten free products and see if that helps.  I also told my husband and kids that they need to be way more careful about crumbs and cleaning up after themselves.

I just noticed that on the packaging of some Amy's products it says that it is made in a facility that also processes wheat products and other allergens.  Does that mean there could be cross-contamination?  I have been eating the products and I am worried that it might be part of the reason why my symptoms are coming back.

I just went and read the ingredients.  The package says gluten-free but it does say it's processed on equipment that is used to process wheat products.  Is that a problem?  How do you avoid being CC'd? I am already doing my own toaster and things like peanut butter.  We make sure counters are wiped and things are cooked separately. I'm not going to forced my kids and husband to go gluten-free just because I have to.

I have been gluten-free for 3 months and I started to feel better after about a month and over the last 2 weeks I've started to feel really sick again.  I don't think I am getting cross-contaminated bc I am being really careful.  The rest of my family (husband and 3 kids) all eat gluten but I wash my hands after handling their food.  I am really, really hoping that I am not also sensitive to dairy.  I drink two smoothies a day as part of my diet plan to lose weight (visalus smoothies) and after cutting out so much already I don't want to cut out dairy.   How would I know if I have other sensitivities?  Or is it possible that I am getting cross-contaminated somehow?
  14. This is going to be a rant so sorry in advance if I offend anyone. I am tired of gluten free being talked about as if it is just a choice. So many tv shows, talk shows, books, diet plans, etc all talk about avoiding gluten as a choice for weight loss or just to treat some bazillion symptoms you may be suffering from. Yes, it has led to more products being available which is great but it really causes negative repercussions for someone like me who actually HAS to avoid even the smallest crumb of gluten and will get seriously ill if I don't. Because when I say I have to eat gluten free I inevitably always get someone saying, "Oh yeah I (or my husband, my friend, my dog) have to eat gluten free but sometimes I just have a regular pizza because the gluten free one tastes bad." Or if I go to a restaurant and spend 10 minutes ordering my meal to make sure they understand exactly how careful they need to be when preparing my food they look at me as if I am overreacting and that I'm just one of those "trendy" dieters. I understand people can do whatever they want and go gluten-free and maybe it helps their health and that's great but when the idea is out there that you can just take a day off or just eat some gluten once in awhile it is seriously dangerous to those of us who have celiac and who react to microscopic amounts of gluten. People just aren't going to take us as seriously, or take as much care in preparing our food as they should, when they know multiple people that say they are also gluten-free but they ate a piece of birthday cake at a party and they were totally fine. Okay rant over.
