    I have been gluten free for four years , I still have DH outbreaks but they are not as extensive as they used to be.  I do still wake up every nite with terrible itching which causes scratching to excess. The hot humid weather of summer makes it all the worse.  My worst areas are buttocks and forearms.  I have not had clear skin for at least 7 years.  I figure this had been building for so many years that it will take many years to disappear.  It does not seem to matter what I apply to my skin, nothing really helps.  I have never taken dapsone.
  2. Help Me With Pie Crusts!

    I don't remember where I got this recipe but I have used it a couple times and it seems to work ok.  I changed a couple ingredients, this is exactly what I used. 1 cup all purpose gluten-free flour (I used Bob's Red Mill) 1 Tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 1/4 tsp salt 6 Tbsp cold lard 1 egg 2 tsp lemon juice mix all dry ingredients & butter until crumbly, then add egg & lemon juice.  Mix until it all holds together. Shape into a ball , put between 2 pieces of wax paper, roll to desired thickness, remove 1 sheet wax paper, flip into pie plate, remove other sheet of wax paper & shape as needed. It worked fine. I have not made a pie with a top crust using this recipe.  I made a pumpkin and pecan pie  using this recipe. Good luck!
  3. I am self diagnosed DH. The only 2 places I have NOT had a breakout are the palms of my hand and the soles of my feet. I tend to break out the worst in the same areas.  My worst areas are the underside of my lower arms and the backside of my upper legs.  I do get scattered break outs in other places, but the ones I mentioned are the worst.

    Have you ever used emu oil on your skin? Reason I ask is I bought a container of "blue goo" today.  It is for cracked heels and hand. The 2 advertised ingredients are emu oil & beeswax. I have never used emu oil before & thought my skin can't get worse using it so I bought some. I just applied some so have no idea how it will work. I'll give it a few days and see what happens.

I don't do much baking, but what I have done is cookies, quick breads, muffins.  I don't have many choices living in a small town w/1 grocery store.  I have used Bobs redmill all purpose baking flour.  That has seemed to be ok for those.  I have not tried bread and have never been a bread fan so I don't know how it would be for that.

In answer to some of your questions, I do eat whole eggs, but not on a regular basis.  I also have always been sensitive to dairy.  I eat some cheese, never milk , some salad dressings that list milk, egg but again not on a regular basis. One food I used to really enjoy was shrimp.  Before this gluten issue became apparent I would notice my lips would get fat & puffy eating certain foods.  I now think the iodine caused the fat lips.  I have not been brave enuf in the past 3 yrs to sit & feast on shrimp but I plan to some day to see what happens.  I hesitate to do that until I am free of a skin breakout.  I enjoy being outside but I have to be careful of sun especially when it is hot and humid or when my skin has active eruptions.  It makes it much worse.  I actually think short exposures to sun when temps are cooler is helpful.  One of the worst things for my skin is when I get hot, my skin gets inflamed and itches terrible.  For that reason it  is hard to go to other people's houses since their room temps are usually higher than what I keep mine at.  I also have my bedroom temp very cool.  The more researching I do I find that gluten has had so many years to build up under my skin, it may take many years to be free of DH.  I & doctors did not know anything about gluten when I had my first breakout.  It was my scalp & I was a teenager.  That was back in the 1960's which was a long time ago.  Sorry this got to be so long. I find it very helpful to share info with people who go thru the same things.
  8. I'm glad to hear someone else describe the kind of reactions I notice.  Most of my breakouts start with a raised welt which as you said you have to scratch. At first there seems to only be clear fluid but after a couple days I too get the hard ball contained inside.  I have referred to that AS GETTING THE CORE OUT.  I too would agree that until that core is removed it is much more itchy and actually hurts.  I don't know how long it takes for yours to heal but mine take a long time.  I am also very sensitive to iodine and avoid as much as I can, but sometimes when eating out of your own house it is almost impossible.  I have been gluten free for over 3 years and have been careful to watch iodine intake for at least 2 1/2 yrs.  I always have active outbreaks but the "craters" as I refer to them are not as large in size as they used to be.  I never realized it would take this long or that I would seem to get more sensitive thru time.  I didn't really help any with my info but a person thinks they are the only one that this happens to unless they hear that somebody else has the same issues.
  9. I have thru time used my own recipes and adjusted as I have tried them.  I have used Bob's mill all purpose baking flour.  That has seemed to work for me.  I live in a smaller town & do not have a lot of grocery options to choose from, but that one is available.

I can identify with the itching becoming so much worse for a couple hours at a time.  And as you say you are always aware of the skin sensation but sometimes it is tolerable and other times not.  I always wake up sometime during the nite w/unbearable itchiness.  I have to scratch and then I try to leave it alone until it calms down.  It often takes at least an hour.  Any time I feel warm the itchiness is worse.  I have to wear soft clothing as not to irritate my skin.
  11. Can We Talk About Iodine?

    I can identify with all of you.  Ihave been gluten-free and as free of iodine as I can be for over 3 years.  I have had DH breakouts this entire time but they are not as severe as they used to be.  One thing I really miss eating is shrimp. I have not had any in over 3 yrs.  One of the first foods I want to eat once my skin clears is shrimp. I may pay the price at that time but I have to try it and see what happens.
  12. I have found the Snyder's gluten-free pretzels to be the best I have tasted.  They work good to use with dips, ham salad, chix salad, whatever.  They taste just like the regular wheat pretzels.  I think they are much better than the Glutino brand.

This burning sensation is very familiar to me but I break out with DH.  Do any of you get skin breakouts after the burning sensation?  The worst places for me for the burning feeling are from elbow to elbow across the backs of my arms and across my upper back.  The other area is from the backs of my knees across my buttocks to the other knee.  Very symmetrical and very itchy, especially when I get warm.  I cannot tolerate being too warm, I immediately get the red hot burning sensation.
  14. I tried this recipe in early Nov & I thought it turned out great.  It was my 1st time w/gluten free crust. I mad a pumpkin pie.  I changed a few thing & am listing exactly what I did. 1C all purpose flour (I used Bob's red mill) 1Tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp xanthum gum 1/4 tsp salt 6 Tbsp lard, cut into cubes 1 large egg 2 tsp lemon juice   Combine the flour,sugar, x gum,salt until crumbly like a coarse meal.  Add egg, lemon j until it holds together. Shape dough into a ball and place btwn 2 pieces of wax paper. Flatten & roll to 1/4 in, remove one side of wax paper & invert into 9" pie pan, remove other sheet of wax paper, cut off excess, crimp edges, put in filling.  It worked great for a pumpkin pie.  as I said I made some changes in the original recipe

The sensations you are feeling sounds like the ones I get before I get DH breakouts.  It gets terribly sensitive, burns, tingles, etc.  Within several days I have breakouts.  It has been terribly cold here in MN and heat being on all the time causes for excess dryness in the air.  My skin has been really dry and itchy lately.  Have you ever had the skin eruptions or the hive like bubbles on your skin?  I also having a hard time finding something to calm it since the sensation seems to come from the inside.  I do use bag balm, vanicream, Gold bond lotion, aloe gel but with limited satisfaction.  If I get warm, my condition worsens.  I don't know that this helps you, but I have shared some info
