  2. I haven't cheked in a while, but most rice cerals from the mainstream companies (Kelloggs, General Mills, etc) contain barley malt which contains gluten. Anything with "natural flavor" is suspect. I haven't found a decent trail mix that is gluten-free (when I say decent, I love chocolate in mine!!) You need to be careful with dried fruit and chocolate - even nuts are sometimes coated with something that has gluten! Also, the factory lines may not be clean. I've become very sick after eating trail mix. I now make my own. Mustard powder is fine. I must say, though, you are off to a great start!
  3. I could be way off base with this, but perhaps something else is occuring along with your being glutened. My body was aching for weeks - i finally went to my GP and had blood work done - I had both Lyme's disease and parvovirus. According to the blood work my doctor estimates that I've had Lyme's for 3 - 4 months! I just finished a month's worth of antibiotics and feel much better. I see you live in PA - how prevalent is Lyme's where you are?
  4. I was diagosed with celiac's three years ago at what seemed to be the onset of the disease. Once diagnosed, is it necessary to have testing repeated? Blood tests, biopsies, other? If the "treatment" is to eat gluten-free, what would the point of repeated teasting be? I am ignorant to "follow-up care" if such a thing is necessary. Please enlighten me! Thanks! Michele
  5. Wow - sorry to hear of your discomfort. I can't believe the things you cannot have! You said nothing acidic and no juice - would this include all fruits as well? Blueberries and raisins always seem to work wonders on my kids (grapes also) but are you even allowed these items? Wishing you well.

  9. Carrie: Please keep in mind that teachers are advocates for children - they are not in education to make children and their parents miserable. You are absolutely correct in realizing that the teacher does not know your child as well as you do (a couple of weeks vs. 5 years!) but the teacher is not "out to get you." Also keep in mind that the teacher is drawing from his/her past experiences with other children when an assessment is made. Perhaps this teacher has never had a child who had celiac disease and isn't aware of possible developmental advancements that can be made once a gluten-free diet has begun. You mentioned special services - these services are not always provided one-on-one but in "group" sessions and a student must be "classified" for these services to be provided - you may not what this "label" for your child if waiting a year is what is warrented - it is quite a process to "declassify" a student. Yes, I am a teacher and this is my "professional" side speaking. As a mother of a five year old daughter who is about to start kindergarten I can only imagine how frustrating it would be if a teacher didn't realize the obvious potential my child has. But being on both sides of the fence I would listen very carefully to what the educators were telling me, digest the info, do my own research (such as you are doing) and then try to have a calm discussion with all involved. What does your pediatrician have to offer to this dilemma? In regards to your question regarding develpmental advancement once healing has begun I have absolutely no idea. Sorry! I only hope that you can find the information you need. And if the recommendation of "holding back" your child is strongly made, realize that many children start a year later simply because of their age or size - nothing to do with their cognitive ability. A strong, positive beginning is so essential for a lifetime love of learning! Best wishes!
  10. I have no symptoms whatsoever. Don't know if I am being glutened (by accident) or not.
  11. Aren't charlie horses caused by some type of vitamin/mineral deficiency? Potassium maybe? I can't remember - I just remember reading about it in pregnancy books. Maybe there's a decrease in vitamin/mineral during menstruation. Just a guess! Isn't there a pill on the market (Yasmin drsp I think) that contains potassium? Maybe that's why I'm thinking potassium - a mingling of various pieces of data that have nothing to do with each other!
  12. Bette: I can totally relate to your flour problem. My husband bought me a bread machine and then we went flour shopping. I bought so much flour it is scarey. In the process, though, this is what I have learned: Brown rice and brown rice bran should be refridgerated/placed in freezer. I also placed my bean flours, hazlenut and almond flours in the freezer. I've placed the following in air-tight containers with labels in my cupboard: tapioca flour, white rice, corn starch, potato starch, and sorghum. I followed Bette Hagman's advice on how to store these items. Good luck!
  13. Dry Skin

    For your hands have you tried vaseline or Aquaphor? I've used Aquaphor on my baby for every dry skin/rash problem imaginable and it clears it right up. I have hypothyroidism and suffer from dry skin from that, but maybe celiac disease is also contributing to it. If you put the Aqauphor on your hands after you shower and then cover with thin white cotton gloves or socks, go to bed, in the morning your dry spots should be noticeably softer. I can't imagine putting this stuff in your hair, though!
