I've never been an angry person, until the last few weeks. I went gluten-free about two months ago and it's been a total roller coaster. I've felt pretty good, and then even sicker than before. Lately my temper has been absolutely boiling. Does anyone have this reaction if their consuming hidden gluten? Or could it be an adjustment to being gluten-free? It's totally irrational, too. Nothing in particular sparks it.
I would still recommend getting the gene test when you can afford it. Your genes won't go anywhere, whereas the immune reaction results will change depending on whether you're gluten-free or not. So if you have raised levels from the gluten stool panel, go off gluten and then get the gene test later when you can afford it. You only have to pay for it once, and it will clarify things for you and perhaps even your family. Since my mom has only the gluten sensiticity genes, it's clear that my father carries the celiac gene (and passed it to me), and it's important that he knows the dangers of eating gluten. Who knows whether he'll listen or not (ha ha).

I've had regular, horrible UTI's as well. I just went gluten-free a month ago and haven't had one yet (fingers crossed). I just wanted to mention that there's a supplement called D-Mannose out there that really helps with UTIs. It's a simple sugar that our body cannot absorb and for some reason bacteria in the urinary tract attach to the sugar when we pee and vioal! All washed out. I'm pretty sure D-mannose is the thing in cranberry juice and cranberry supplements that helps with UTI's. It's much stronger than cranberry supplements, is a little more expensive and tastes great! You can find it at health food stores near the cranberry supplements.
I got my results through enterolab and found out I have a celiac marker gene and elevated immune reaction levels. I definitely recommend enterolab - it may not diagnose celiac disease specifically, but it will tell you what kind of sensitivity you have as well as whether or not you have the celiac disease gene. In terms of people having "negative" results, I'm not really sure. My mom got tested through them after I did and discovered that she has a sensitivity, but not the gene for celiac disease and she's changed her diet accordingly. It's worth the money! Good luck!
I've had a similar experience with sleep and doctors, etc. Last year I was tested for sleep apnea - the results were positive (held my breath for over a minute a couple of times), but they were more concerned because I was waking up something like 240 times in the night (not fully conscious- they were arousals, ie. coming out of deep sleep). I was so excited to finally know what was wrong with me. I'd been seeing doctors for fatigue since I was 15 and they never found anything. I moved soon after that, and had to have another sleep test so that could fit the breathing aparatus, or set the levels. The next sleep test said I didn't have sleep apnea (didn't reach the 10 episodes a night thing). The doctor decided to test me for narcolepsy, so I had another 24 hour sleep test and those came out negative too. So they sent me to a psychiatrist, who wanted to put me on a ton of medication. I said no way - went to see a nutritionist and she helped my figure out that I have celiac disease. Since being gluten-free I've slept better, and feel better during the day, but still wake up knowing that I haven't been breathing. I lost all my faith in doctors after that. Anyway, that's my story with sleep disorders. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a tie between celiac disease and narcoleptic/sleep apneaic symptoms.

I feel in a similar position as you, I've been gluten-free for a couple of months, but it isn't really helping with my mood swings. I feel like I'm being really careful with what I eat, but it doesn't seem to help. I've been struggling with depression for the last eight years (I'm 26) and was hoping that a gluten-free diet would really help. My physical symptoms are a lot better, but not my emotional ones. I guess it can take quite a while to recover, so maybe that's it. I'm in therapy and that does help, and I've been on antidepressants in the past - I just don't want to go there again. Recently I've had these fits of anger - which is so out of character for me - usually I just cry. Oh well, roller-coaster! I'll wait and see!
Thank you all, your replies are very helpful. I heard somewhere that the sticky rice can have gluten in it, and that the seaweed (don't know the terminology) can too. Should I avoid rolls? Great news on the wasabi - I love it! What about the pickled ginger?

Since my fecal fat numbers are normal, does that mean I have just a sensitivity, or is it celiac disease? Does it matter if it's one or the other? I have really bad GI symptoms, but no weight loss. Just looking for input, thanks!
