  1. I'm from Burlington so I'm GTA born, living in Minnesota. As for iron that's actually how I first got diagnosed. My count was low, went on pills and never increased, leading to more questions and eventually realizing celiac was a suspect, got tested and there it was. The low iron was from malabsorption due to damaged villi in the intestines. It was...
  2. The emotional toll when first dealing with celiac is very hard. That's normal, so just know that. It will get better. You will always have your guard up to stay safe, but will get used to it. You will adjust, you will be ok. Kraft is reliable brand even though doesnt say gluten-free on label. They are good at ensuring allergens are on the label. So...
  3. Not sure I understand your question...doesnt matter to me if I see it or not.
  4. You have enough on your plate, dont worry about dairy unless you actually have issues with it. I've been celiac for 10 years and no dairy issues at all. Just focus on the things you can control today. If oats cause no problems same thing, dont worry about it. I love oats and it was really disappointing to give them up. However I got over it, you will...
  5. I just thought of one more watch out. Oats can cause problems with some people even though they are naturally gluten-free. Oats are grown in the same fields as wheat so cc can easily occur. Even certified gluten-free oats can be a problem due to another issue in that there is a protein that is very similar to gluten and can trigger a response. I had to give...
  6. Do you mean the chips? Target isnt in Canada anymore, but there are other brands that are. I think lays might be, doritos are... I'm Canadian but live in the US now. Certification works the same way in both countries. Is that what you were asking?
  7. Your family doesnt have to give up gluten, what I meant was that rather than you have dedicated gluten-free zone in the kitchen, they have a designated gluten zone which makes the odds tilted more in your favour. That way most of the kitchen is safe. If you happen to be the chef of the family, you tell them what the rules are...the chef rules the kitchen...
  8. Dont share the fryer. I would ask your husband about a slightly different approach. What we do in my family is stay mostly gluten free overall, but when my wife and son want gluten THEY are the ones who use a designated area and pots etc. Its far safer that they accommodate you vs you accommodating their gluten diet. They can eat what they want but they...
  9. Hi Lynne, I urge you to get your own toaster, never use a glutened toaster it's too risky since just 1 crumb can cause big problems. Yes get separate kitchenware BUT if its stainless steel and washed properly it's ok. Frying pans get your own since scratches can house gluten. No wooden spoons, no silicone cooking utensils, cutlery is fine if steel. Now think...
  10. Good news! Stay strict with the diet and keep doing th 6 month bloodwork routine until you feel comfortable going to annual. All good well done.
  11. Fellow celiac here, if ever in the tampa area check out middle grounds grill in Treasure Island...they do agood job of preparing delicious safe food there.
  12. Lots of food recommendations here. One thing to do with any brand is to toast it if its suits thebtypr of sandwich toi are making. Even if you toast amd let it cool, it makes the bread way better and not so gummy.
  13. Get a new doctor, and specifically ask for the celiac blood panel while on a diet that includes gluten. Or just ditch your doctor and find a lab that will run the panel for you. They cannot deny your request for the bloodwork since you will pay for it. I think it might be as simple as that. Hang in there...
  14. I'm not a Dr of course, but numbers will not drop all the way down in 3 months. As long as the trend is down things are on the right track. Maybe stay as is, but let him have certified gluten-free chips or snacks so he gets something enjoyable through all this, and see where the numbers end up. Check vitamin levels to see if they are ok which shows absorption...
