I've never eaten at an Olive Garden but it's always been my experience that Caesar Salads are served with croutons. And even if you order it without croutons, if you don't explain why, they might simply pick the croutons off of an existing Caesar and serve it to you. (And they might do that even if you do explain your sensitivity to gluten which is another story altogether!)
I confess that I, too, sometimes go into restaurants and order stuff that "appears" to be gluten-free without consulting with someone on staff but I don't think I'd ever chance that with a Caesar.
Hee, I live in Brooklyn and go home to Boston often where I persuade my family to have gluten-free meals with me at Legals. And, yes, we go to the one at the Chestnut Hill Mall. Are we the same person?
I love Legals. They always treat me well and make me feel safe.
I figure that once I've asked for the gluten-free menu, I've brought the issue to their attention.
As far as a manager goes, I find that restaurants that have gluten-free menus are usually places that train their employees well and you're not going to be dealing with a 20 year old who thinks you said "glucose." Maybe at a non-celiac friendly restaurant, but not at Outback or PF Chengs. So I don't usually ask for a manager as long as the server seems competent and knows what I'm talking about.
I have never had a problem with Mango chutney mayo, Green Olive mayo, Lemon Dill Mayo and Especial (Ketchup, Mayo and raw onions, so good!).
I read somewhere that "most" of their sauces are gluten-free. I tried to get clarification about which ones but no one knew anything. However, the four sauces I mentioned above never did me any harm and I suspect that the "most" as opposed to "all" has mainly to do with the fact that they offer malt vinegar as a condiment. Avoid that and I'm pretty sure you'll be safe with any of the mayo-based sauces.
Oh, and there's a cheese sauce that I'm not so sure about. Looks like it would have flour in it.
I just got diagnosed with Lung Fibrosis (long sad story!.....) and I was just informed by my doctor today that after they run some tests they are putting me on prednisone. A LOT of prednisone!
Um, here's the deal. I have heard a lot of stories about people just losing their sh!t while on Prednisone. It's a steriod and therefore you experience a "roid rage" not unlike being on anabolic steroids. I DO NOT WANT to be in a 'roid rage. I'm sick enough as it is and I don't care to lose all my friends, alienate my family etc. in addition to everything else.
And I have this horrible feeling that it's going to be bad. I'm pretty irritable as it is and am very sensitive to mood altering substances. I have already called some of my friends to tell them that things are going to be bad in the next few months.
Does anyone know of any method or drug treatment that will counteract the emotional effects of Prednisone?
You can make your own gluten-free ranch dressing. Here's a recipe I cribbed from Epicurious.com:
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons powdered cultured buttermilk blend* (Check ingredients to see if your brand is gluten-free. It usually is!)
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons finely chopped celery leaves
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
3/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried dillweed
*Available alongside the canned and powdered milk in most supermarkets.
Whisk first 3 ingredients in large bowl. Mix in remaining ingredients. Cover and chill at least 1 hour to blend flavors. (Dressing can be prepared 5 days ahead. Keep refrigerated.)
I went there this weekend and I just wanted to report two things.
Those amazing meatballs that come with the spaghetti on Tuesdays-only are now an everyday appetizer. They are not served with pasta but by themselves with marinara sauce. I ordered them and dunked the breadsticks in the sauce. Pretty amazing.
Remember a few months ago that someone of us were complaining (but not that hard!) that there was no salt in the food? Well now the pendulum has swung the other way and everything is super salty. Did one of us say something? If so, who did we talk to? We need to tell him/her to take it down a notch. I said something diplomatic to the waitress but I'm not sure it did anything.
Otherwise, well, my meal was a brilliant experience. Risotteria is Risotteria is Risotteria and I'll continue going even if I have to drink a gallon or two of water and take blood pressure medication!
How much Ensure can you drink in one day? I am finding that a lot of food is totally disagreeing with me and I feel nauseous after every meal. I am trying -- desperately -- to gain weight so this is not a good thing. The only thing I can keep down is Ensure. So I'm drinking a lot of it. Is this wise?
Usually what I see listed in shampoo ingredients is "wheat protein". If I'm not mistaken, that is usually the only glutenous ingredient that exists in most shampoos -- it's used to thicken the shampoo. Otherwise, all the other confusing sounding chemicall-y ingredients like "alkaline" and "sulfate" are okay.
I haven't eaten there, but I'm assuming you already know that they have a gluten-free/vegetarian menu. I totally understand the impulse not to eat out....but if you do eat out, I'd say Elephant Walk is a good place to cut your teeth.
